Sheltowee Trace Trail
April 17th, 2023
Day 1, 25.5 Miles (-0.7 reroute)
It was cold. Full layers cold. Camping close to the trailhead after arriving around 10pm~ the night before, we took a lazy morning packing up and went back to touch the official sign.
A terminus with its own “selfie stick” built right in, a nice group shot later, we began the hiking at 7:26am~
Not knowing what to expect the trail started off immaculately maintained, and would stay that way. A short and somewhat steep climb later and we were on top of a windswept ridge.
Fluctuating between cold and cool it was perfect hiking weather for the first day and the miles swept by in chatter and hiking stories. Soon we dropped down into Clark Park where multiple signs announced the presence of slow, special, and wonderfully dumb dogs. Actually, the sign said theses things… sadly we didn’t get to meet Dopey!
It was before 11am, we had planned to camp only another 12~ miles ahead but the call of town 15~ miles soon became a siren call we could not ignore.
We set our sights on town and began stepping through well graded, well marked, and just pleasantly easy trail to cruise on.
A few miles along a two track road, a mixture of single track, and we were on the final descent into Morehead.
Passing by a college, following the turtle steps on the sidewalk, and walking the length of town, we found ourselves back at our car we had left less than 24hrs prior.
Must mean the trail was done… we were back at the car, time to go home… but first a stop at Buffalo Wild Wings, a motel shower, and maybe another week or two hiking along this trail, and then maybe “home.”
Time to go get some stepping with the boys, @prof_carl and @naturalhorsepower some southern boys stepping south through the south, sounds about right.
Time for a quick little tootle with the turtles.
