The Dreamcast had more video memory than the PS2. Sure the PS2 could produce a higher polygon count but it couldn't support textures anywhere near the resolution of the Dreamcast. They had to simplify the level of shadowing and cell shading when the ported the Jet Set Radio series to the PS2. The PS2 couldn't have handle Shenmue, atleast not without making it look very muddy and nowhere near as crisp.

@jfsl98 you are forgetting a very important factor. the ps2 outputs video at 640 x 480, the psp renders games in only 480 x 272. the big difference you're seeing is the fact that it's so low resolution, BUT because the psp has less to render, it can render about as well as the ps2. that's also why video output is in a box for psp, because it would slow down if forced to render in a higher resolution than was intended. though people have forced 480p out before (kinda slow though like 75% speed).

You want a really good example of this just compare Ecco: Defender of the Future on the Dreamcast and PS2, it looks dramatically sharper and much more vibrant on the Dreamcast. Oh yea, and compare Marvel vs Capcom 2 on both platforms. The PS2's limited video memory meant it wasn't capable of displaying nearly as many high resolution sprites on screen as once so the gameplay is much much slower on the PS2 than it is on the Dreamcast.

@egg64 it could be pspdisp with nulldc running on his computer, he does have a computer on in the background. it would work pretty well too, psp has the same control scheme as the dreamcast.

Resolution doesn't matter in the department of the TRUE polygons, the geo engine. These are the truly calculated polygons themselves, whereas fillrate, which relies on fillrate, is a 2d image raster in conjunction of the Z-buffer. The geo engine polys also cannot be faked to a texture per frame for performance of the gpu fillrate.

The Ps2 has 32 mb of memory, The DREMCAST only 16 mb. As I said The Ps2 supports far more polygons than the dreamcast. Have you seen the graph of God of War 2 and the Black Ps2?

I'm pretty certain that Shenmue could be done early on, just not by Sega. It isn't that demanding given the dreamcast would only be pushing around 3-5M per sec with appliances at this level. I mean, come on, Sega felt they needed to tone the poly counts in VF4 on ps2 when there's only 2 characters on screen at once and the BGs in 5 for the 360/ps3 max at 500k. Ps2 has racers with scenes that big and cars of a 10k range and i'm sure 4's BGs are half or much less.

So why a version of Resident Evil Outbraker Launched initially for Dreamcast and then Ps2 With Improved graphics? Ah, if you mean the memory card, Sony released a long time ago, a memory card of 128 MB pair the ps2.

Avarage poly counts on the dreamcast are under 3-5M/sec. Ps2's is 10-15M/sec, much like gamecube's output. I think you're forgetting God of War 2, let alone even the first one. That game could not be ran on a dreamcast without cuts in the main detail geometry. Shenmue had about 3k poly main characters, which by a dreamcast's standards, is about 7.5-15k (by a 100-200k vs 500k poly output at 30fps, or DC vs GC/PS2). Ps2/GC pushes 3k as an avarage for characters.

No, I don't mean a memory card. Do you know nothing about computer hardware??? I meant the actual video memory of the Dreamcast itself. It has more video RAM than the PS2 meaning it's capable of rendering much higher resolution textures than the PS2 is. You were able to add a higher polygon count to games that were rereleased on the PS2 but often times the lighting or textures weren't nearly as good.

@beanwithbacon the PS2 could have handled shenmue, though probably not at the beginning of it's life. techniques for improving the quality of PS2 games jumped near the end of it's life but early on it was pretty bad. there were a lot of polys and textures being pushed in shenmue that's for sure and PS2 wouldn't have looked as good (due to having to scale down textures) but it could have done it. obviously it would have done it through tricks, but it still could have.

Actually, the ps2's GPU is superior to the Dreamcast's. It didn't have hardware functions because the VU1 was already any of this on the EE. The GS was planned only as a raw rasterizer. Hardware is not superior to software rendering. People have merely compared a max of 2Gflops performance to 50 in 1999 and went ignorent to the fact that software is more efficient. It isn't emulation. Hardwired hardware is simply like a 3d software with tools given to the programmer over them making them.

@beanwithbacon lol i'd never be the one to talk bad about the dreamcast, i own five and it's my favorite console of all time. however, though the gpu was far better than the ps2's the ps2 was so good at raw polys that it could over power the dreamcast in almost every way. dreamcast had hardware support for bump mapping, anti-aliasing, texture compression, etc. but most of it was never used. dreamcast COULD have looked better than a PS2, but it never did in it's lifetime.

Ps2 has edge sorted 2x AA on the GS too, and though people thought it was not usable, this was another case of hardware programmer newbism. GT3 and Soul Reaver 2 used this at a high performance and with big scenes of pretty decent counts. Bump mapping was also done on ps2 as well, first in 2004's Malice and later in Path of Neo and HitMan Blood Money. You can come to my channel to look at how the performance isn't really hit by it any more than on a PC (SC port analysis P2 on bump maps).
