For it’s time, Shenmue was pioneering and groundbreaking, and not only that, criminally under appreciated. The QTE system was immense, and the combat system was (as has been alluded to) a more rudimentary VF system. Shenmue II’s system obviously evolved greatly, but I was surprised by how engaging the combat was on 1. Every blow was felt. lol
@SURU_
Жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. Even after all these years, I believe the Shenmue series has the best QTE system. Even short cutscenes have multiple outcomes that play out where you can still succeed depending if you miss one or more QTE, giving a unique experience for each player. Almost every other game's QTEs just has a "pass" or "fail" cutscene and sends you back to the beginning if you mess up. The amount of detail and love that went into the QTE system is second to none! Tbh, after playing a good amount of Shenmue 2 lately, I can't decide which game's combat is more enjoyable for me. S1 requires more execution with it's complex inputs, manual throw escapes, wacky combo system, etc. As a whole, S1's combat feels very satisfying once you get the hang of it and has a lot of depth.

This game is definitely a product of it's time, and sadly this along with the Dreamcast in general just had such a small window of time where it was in the spotlight and the "new best thing". Within a couple years or so the GameCube and PS2 blew up and nobody knew or cared what a Dreamcast was. I wouldn't change my childhood though, this game was the most impactful game on there and it led to so many good memories and inside jokes/references between my siblings to this day. I never got the impression that Shenmue's combat was bad - it looks just fine to me, and I appreciate close combat games and/or games that have substantial close combat systems overall. I've never played a single VF game, only Tekken and DoA, and considering just how awful DoA is, I can't imagine VF being much worse. That said, I recall that Shenmue 3's combat was heavily criticized, even though it really looked no different, to me, than the combat system of, say, a Yakuza game. Why was it so heavily criticized, and just how much different/better/worse is it compared to Shenmue 1 and 2?
@SURU_
10 ай бұрын
For me (as a huge VF fan), it's the lack of impact and depth the combat system Shenmue 3 has. None of the games in the series do combat perfectly, but when I compare S3 to the other Shenmues, it doesn't expand, improve, or even re-create what the first two did well. The first game feels like a very unique take on VF3, putting more of an emphasis on defense overall, but having satisfying combos once you dive into the game's combat. Shenmue 2, while more simplified in comparison to 1 reminds me a lot of VF4. It takes everything S1's combat had to offer and made it faster paced and offense-oriented, without simplifying it too much. It has arguably the best combat and even more depth than the first Shenmue. S3 feels over-simplified has little to no room for creativity compared to both games. It's left in a weird state where it doesn't have the freedom or depth of the first two Shenmues, but isn't as engaging or refined as Like a Dragon.

More than just plain "boring" I'd say it's really cozy, and I'm definitively happy with that. Compared to their relatives, Shenmue isn't THAT action-filled as their relatives, in order to bring, most of the time, focus on the adventure (protagonizing the intriguing story, short but rich open-world scenarios and their interactions, and of course Virtua Fighter-based moveset (which moves are learn by talking to the right people) and combat, as shown here).

What sucks is you don't really get a chance to practice anything because there is barely any fighting in this game. Sure you can just go to am empty parking lot and do some moves but that is different. "Boards don't hit back."

Why is this one have better combat system than Shenmue 3?

They wanted to make the game more "accessible", unfortunately they thought that meant dumbing down the combat.

i feel like the combat is where they dropped the ball the most.. i LOVED this game as a kid and when i replayed it for shenmue 3 i got to see that the combat is pretty deep but there is really no need to bother.. if there was a yakuza-like arena area where you could fight progressively harder fights for prizes and those enemies had specific weaknesses that certain moves could take advantage of more than others it would of been much more worthwhile to learn the system. and outside of sightseeing and random chats this is really the only way to make any kind of character progression besides the main story so it's strange there wasn't some kind of arena.. but whatever nothing can diminish my experience playing this in 1999

It may be boring these days, but at the time it was amazing that all this was even in there.

It looks pretty easy to me... Aren't you supposed to be showing off how it's NOT boring?

The only time Shenmue combat wasn’t hype was 3. 1&2’s it was always a highlight getting into a fight.
