In this interview, Shepard Bryan Benedict describes his experiences in the United States Army in Vietnam. He tells of his early education and how he knew at the time that he was likely to be drafted. He recounts his own family’s military background with his father serving in the U.S. Navy on a supply ship in the Mediterranean during World War II as well as an ancestor, Thomas R. Cobb, who was killed during the Civil War in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He tried to go to Officer Candidate School but caught pneumonia. He describes his training and how in San Francisco he could give blood and get a pass to leave base. He relates the heat and conditions on arriving in Vietnam. He outlines his duties and living conditions in country. He narrates his return to Vietnam in 2014 and describes his feelings. He tells of his post-war career and family.
