That's interesting. They've brought Moriarty into this one. I believe there was no reference to him in the original story.

Moriarty is only brought up in three of the Sherlock Holmes stories, despite his reputation as "the Napoleon of Crime". The nature of the crime here was such that it would lend itself to Holmes description of him as being the "spider in the web" controlling of half that is illegal in London. I think this was to create a logical backstory for the following episode of "the Final Problem" and Holmes psychological issues that are presented in the later part of the series, resulting from his near death at Moriarty's hands. I actually liked how the series did this. They conveyed the shadowy, behind the scenes nature of Moriarty's role as a criminal "mastermind", consulting with other "lesser" criminals in the same way Holmes puzzled out his client or the official police's most baffling cases. As Ellery Queen so aptly put it "the player on the other side" in the game of crime and detection.
