I really like this scene's use of sub-framing. The second shot in this scene is relatively crowded, containing the actors, windows, door frame, stool, and projectors. Meanwhile the shot taken from inside the auditorium facing towards them only contains Buster Keaton and Kathryn McGuire, adding emphasis to the actors and their emotions. Then we have the shot from inside the auditorium and facing the movie screen. They could've easily done this from inside the projection booth but they didn't. I think that the shot of Buster and Kathryn in their subframe very much imitates the shot of the movie playing in it's subframe (being the stage/theater instead of the Booth's window) which goes along with the idea of Buster imitating the actors. Edit: Wow I didn't even realize that the actor in the movie screen is Buster Keaton. I guess that just further goes to show the effectiveness of this. While I'm editing this I might as well also say that I think if the subframe wasn't there on Buster and Kathryn, I probably wouldn't have realized right away that Buster was looking into the auditorium.
