The next singer I am including in my Verdi baritones play list is Sherrill Milnes. Milnes was a leading baritone at the Met in the 1970s and 1980s who specialized in mostly Verdi operas. Therefore, he was a Verdi baritone, and when he was young he had an excellent upper range. At the end of this aria, Milnes takes a high B flat in the cadenza which is very impressive.
In this aria William Tell is about to shoot an apple off of his son Jemmy’s head with an arrow. It is either he shoots it off his son’s head, or they both die. Of course Tell is very concerned, and he tells his son to stay still. This aria is very moving, and Milnes gives a moving performance. A translation is below.
Stay quite still, and bend
an imploring knee to the ground.
Call upon God, call upon God, it is He alone,
my child,
Who through the son can save the father.
Stay like that, but look up at the sky,
stay like that, but look up at the sky.
In threatening this beloved head
this steel tip may startle your eyes.
Move as little as you can, as little as you can…
Jemmy, Jemmy, think of your mother!
She waits for us both!
