I adore this song, even after 28 years. This was the one album that introduced me to the lyrical power and storytelling of female singer/songwriters of the 1990s. I never did understand why ALL I WANNA DO was so big, even today it is the one and only track I skip. If I were to choose the highlights of the album I would pick LEAVING LAS VEGAS, STRONG ENOUGH, NO ONE SAID IT WOULD BE EASY, WHAT I CAN DO FOR YOU, and the sublime I SHALL BELIEVE.

As with my comment above, I think "All I Wanna Do' has a dark undertone dressed up with ear pleasing hooks. I think the title is Billy's lament. His life is basically miserable, so he says to this stranger in a bar that 'All I Wanna Do........" Yeah, I think Ms Crowe is playing the 3 dimensional chess version of songwriting. Things that are truly art, and not merely decorative or entertaining creations always have layers of meaning. Even if I'm wrong, the artist gave me a path to see the work from another perspective.

I do skip all I wanna do a lot as well but I think it’s mainly cause it’s been in our ears at every chance for 30 years lol. The lyrics are actually pretty dark. No one said it would be easy is sooo good I wish she would sing it live again. I think she only sang it live around 93-97 and maybe again in the 00s.

@@joseph-ow1hfsheryl didn’t write the lyrics to this one. They had written the music and kept trying out diffeeent lyrics and nothing worked so sheryl grabbed a book of poetry beside her and just starting singing the poem. The poem was Fun by Wyn Cooper. She called him up told him he would get 50 percent if they could use it. Made a bunch of people millionaires!

This type of music was not popular anymore among the young girls of my age but Sheryl quickly became one of my favorite artists. I know all the lyrics to every one of her 90's songs and the 1st album of y2k era.

It's hard to believe a record with this level of writing and performance was a first offering. Artist typically need more time to achieve this sort of quality. This song in particular has 2 layers, that make it way more sophisticated than it seems. First of all it's a really 'catchy' tune with a nice bouncy beat. And on a casual listen it sounds like she's talking about mere flirtation, but a closer listen reveals it's really about sexual exploitation of young performers by the Hollywood business insiders. In other words......the 'Me Too' movement long before anyone ever heard of Harvey Weinstein outside of the industry. Pulling off writing about something this disturbing, but making it not 'preachy' takes a level of talent most do not have. Right up there w/ Springsteen. But out of the damn gate!! Amazing.

I gaffed this clip. The best and most memorable thing was her lips. Beautiful. There are only a few ECU shots of her mouth at the microphone. If the director had any sense, there would have been more, and less of the obligatory 'narrative' shots depicting the 'story' of the song. Were there enough crane shots for you? Yeah, well, the DP got his rental on it, so...... This was shot just before the album became a big hit. I took home a couple bottles of some non-name vodka that has been supplied by some distributor. Uhhhh, did you see any labels? Me neither. Good times.

None of this is "objectively" creepy. People hear lyrics but they are prone to interpretation. A lot of work went into producing this video, (as at least one of the Godsent comments below would evidence) and it is a brilliant visual rendering of the song. Sure: the eye candy cannot totally efface the creeping finding that it's all a satire sung from a male perspective and an unreliable narration. Be that as it may, the video is not a misrepresentation, and neither are the comments. The comments are not even Intended to derive the song's intrinsic meaning; they are purely personal reactions that follow a trend because Sheryl Crow is hot. So how can they be wrong? It's not as though one has to agree with the song's "message" in order to enjoy it, and I for one do not appreciate your corruption of the song because it seems like propaganda: a personal interpretation made to make the song look like a put-down on a class of people that include not only manipulators but just as easily people who are doing the opposite: just being honest. Even Sheryl seems to enjoy playing the part of the protagonist in the video, and how she rocks that suit with those unsettling eyes turns creepy back to sexy, in a Lilith sort of way. And why isn't it creepy when SHE does it, any way? She did not seem to hold any one to that double-standard. She knew how the game worked and she played it to the top. So she's the protagonist now. (Or antagonist, if you will.) Good for her! Dm.A.A.
