The ozone layer, located in the stratosphere, six to thirty miles above the Earth's surface, is a thin, gaseous blanket primarily composed of ozone molecules. These molecules, made up of three oxygen atoms, give the ozone layer its unique ability to absorb and block most of the sun's harmful ultraviolet, or UV, radiation.A world without this protective layer would see a dramatic increase in the intensity of the sun's UV radiation reaching the Earth's surface.
