My wife's inspection was due and I made the mistake of not taking care of it. She took it to the local dealer. The dealer failed the car because of a "worn bushing" on the rear lower control arms and the "shift to park" issue discussed here. $1500.00!!! She brought it home (thankfully) and told me about it. I found this wonderful video. I skipped a few of the steps by not removing the panels. I just peeled them back enough where I could pop the console up. It was tight but I was able to insert the paper click as described. Took me less than 10 mins and it seems to be working well. Now I just have to wait a couple days for these obscure bushings (which look completely fine) to come in so I can install those. Thanks man!

I appreciate this video, i will try it out. I have a 2018 Acadia and got it in 2018, brand new. Within 4-5 months into owning it, i got the park to shift and something about steering assist reduced. Luckily was still under warranty and they fixed for free. It started doing the park to shift again and i will try this. Now i just gotta find a solution for the electrical problems 🤦♀️ thank you.

Those are the two most common issues. Everyone in this this video has successfully fixed the acadia's shift to park. Our Acadia also have the steering reduced message. You'll notice the fan goes to high as well. It's the thermostat. For some reason that's just the stupid way GM designed it to let you know the thermostat is not within spec anymore. If you actually disconnect the negative cable on the battery for 5 minutes and reattach, it will temporarily function normal again until it figures out that the thermostat is not within spec again. Anyway, to get it done at the dealer is quite expensive, but it is DIY a bowl. I fixed mine for $100, I didn't film it though cuz it was actually my wife that insisted on fixing it. Good luck

This has been an issue on my wife’s 2018 Acadia for about 3 years. I tried the 50 flick fix which made it a bit better and later took it to the dealer for the jumper. It didn’t do much better, I actually doubted that they did the work. My wife was ready to trade it in because this problem wouldn’t go away. Then I found your fix, easy to follow and I was surprised to find the dealer jumper installed which I removed. Haven’t had a single error in 4 months!

Great video! I used these instructions on a 2018 AWD Acadia and the only difference I saw was an intermediate wire harness between the one you showed and the plug. It was still 4 wires, but strangely had a label on it marked "KOREA". I thought that was interesting. I inserted the paper clip, but it occurred to me afterwards to just short the wires together on the intermediate harness. Either way, my shift to park problems were gone immediately.
@ExoticCarDIY

That harness is one of GM's "fixes" as part of the TSB, that obviously doesn't work long-term. There are some talk on the forums about what the harness does, I think it was to reduce the voltage to the micro switch which they thought was what was destroying the micro switch. Either way, it obviously doesn't work, just bypassing the micro switch seems to be the most effective way.

This is awesome. I’ve been having this problem for a couple years now but there’s no way I trust myself to do this lol. My easy fix or solution I should say (cause it doesn’t fix the problem), is that I simply put my foot back on the break and act as if I’m putting the car back into gear and back in to park. The car is off of course so don’t restart it, then my easy exit kicks in so I know it worked and I get out. Took a while to figure this out. Before I was probably like many of you. Turning the car back on. Driving back and forth a couple feet lol. Or just playing with the gear shifter indefinitely until something happens 😆😆😆

Lol I took my car into the dealership and told them I had this issue. My car at the time was under warranty. So they “fixed it” for free. They apparently changed the sensor. So they sent me home. I brought it back a few months later because the issue came back. It was still under warrenty. They reset the code or did something not exactly sure what and said to keep an eye on it but that should fix the problem. Months pass and finally I’m out of warrenty and the problem came back. So now I take it in and they tell me they now have to change the shifter assembly because they said it has a different part number. So as I waited the sales rep came to me and told me I had to pay $125 or something like $125. It was much but it was a little over $100. I told him no. I’m not paying that. So then the drama started. I will not go into the detail of the drama lol. Past the drama the sales rep came back and told me they will take care of it for free. I left a bad review for the dealership and also the company. Weeks after someone from headquarters contacted me and apologized for my troubles. They gave me a $100 gift card. I haven’t had the problem ever since. That doesn’t mean my car is all good lol It’s not. It’s been in the dealership all week because apparently there’s another bad sensor on my car. This time it has to deal with the emergency park lol 😂 I took the car in and they checked it and reset the code and sent me home. This was couple months ago. Issue came back so took it back a month ago and they did the same thing. So then beginning of this week the issue came back again. I took it in and they checked it and reset it and sent me home. While driving halfway home the problem came back and so I turned around and took it back. As they were resetting it and getting ready to send me home again for the fifth time the brakes permanently got stuck. They couldn’t disengage the emergency brakes lol so they were stuck with the car. What’s funny was they told me they didn’t have loaner cars but when it got stuck and they couldn’t give it back to me they apparently got an extra car lol. So they lent me a loaner car and went on my way home. This was the beginning of the week. They still have my car. By the way, I have a 2017 Acadia Denali Sport. Look it up, this version of the Denali, “Sport”, is their top of the line. So I paid extra thinking I will not see the dealership for problems because I was thinking they put their best engineers on this car. I guess I was wrong with this assumption. We were looking at buying a Yukon Denali after this car but after talking to the wife we decided to go else where. By the way, the loaner they gave us is not something compatible with a Denali Sport. It’s something way below it with everything standard. The loaner doesn’t even lock itself I have to lock it. The recliner is manual for the passenger. There’s no trunk space. Etc. haha 😂 I have to run, but maybe if I have more time I’ll come back and tell you what other issues I had with this car while under warrenty. Things like onstar sensor, the number rusted, the sunroof clamp was bad, the radiator fan wouldn’t turn off due to the sensor, which I had to pay $250. I wasn’t happy with that and I’m still not happy with it. I know it’s only $250 but still I’m not happy. I believe I had couple more issues which were all fixed. All the the issues were fixed free of charge and loaners were also given free of charge so I am happy for that but I’m not happy with the fact I have to go in all the time.

Thank you so much for this video. My wife has a 2018 Chevy Traverse High Country with only 45,000ish miles. It has been in the dealership three times so far for the same reason and they just keep replacing the shifter switch and harness. This time she was able to turn the vehicle off (it was still in reverse and would not engage park) but then we couldn't turn it on and the shifter was jammed in reverse and would not move. We started by taking the drivers front panel off and my wife was able to detach the wire from there. Her Traverse has an additional connection to the wires (the purple, black, and white wire) you showed and it is in the exact same place. I took the boot off the shifter and realized that in her model we don't have to disconnect any wires because you can fish it out of the shifter boot and attach the paper clip to that harness. In other words they connection you took off has another four inches of wire and then the purple, white, and black connection (not sure if that is factory or something the dealership had done) So now if for any reason the paperclip were to come out we can access it directly through the shifter boot. Again brother, thank you so much for this video you saved us countless hours back and forth to the dealership once again. FYI I felt like your wife and the beginning of the video earlier today.

Awesome, great job! Thanks for the tips for the traverse, definitely makes it quicker if you can access that harness without having to remove all that stuff. It's kind of sad how much people have spent taking their cars to dealers to have them replace the shifter, sometimes multiple times. And even if it's under warranty, you're still out the time... Thanks for the video. I was able to follow the directions, however, I ran into two problems I thought I would share with others (assuming I am not the only one which will run into these). #1 - I was unable to get the side panels off, however, the seat support rail would not let the plastic panel out far enough to remove the back bottom clip with out breaking it off. The only solution I could think of was to unscrew the seat bolts and pick up the front of the seat which allowed the side panel to come out at the base and then it came out easily. NOTE: The bolts that hold the seat rails are star shaped, size T50. #2 - I followed the directions and tried multiple attempts to remove the gear shift but was unsuccessful. I was worried I was going to break something so I decided to try to finish the job with keeping the shifter on. I needed a 2nd set of hands to hold a flashlight but was able to complete the job. Needless to say the job took longer than 30 minutes but it was well worth my time if it solves this issue. Thanks again and hope my comments may help others if you have the same problems.

This isn't technically a fix more a bypass of a safety feature. There is a bulletin that addresses this concern. #19-NA-206 it involves using a jumper harness and a new switch on the original shifter. Less than $50 for the parts from GM. Harness: 84733196 $12.75 and Switch: 84955381 $31.42 I know I'm a Debbie Downer. Yay LoL But yes what is described in this video will bypass the switch and make the error message go away.
@ExoticCarDIY
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, check out the description for additional info There was a discussion on Acadia forum about the harness. In short, the micro switch in the shifter is not adequate for either the voltage or amperage that the car is supplying to it. This extra power kills the micro switch. The harness does not fix this, it simply lowers the power to the switch in an attempt to prolong the life of the micro switch. The problem is, it's still doesn't work. In fact if you read through the comments here there are dozens who have the harness that still have the shift to park issue. Ideally yes, you want the system to work as designed (i.e. no bypass) no one's arguing with that. But like I said in the description, this has been tested by numerous people for several years, and there are no drawbacks whatsoever. No compromises on safety, no change in operation. It literally operates as it should minus the error
@tonyikner

@@ExoticCarDIY The switch, to my knowledge, is there to make sure the shifter is fully seated in the park position. From what I understand it is possible to shift to park and the shift mechanism not be fully seated in park which can allow the vehicle to come out of park. Your video is a great work around I just think it should be pointed out that it isn't a true fix. I've fixed several of these shifters (I'm unfortunately a GM tech. I should have stayed in school I know LoL.) and have yet to have one that needed to be fixed again but that's just my personal experience with the jumper harness and switch. The average mileage I'm seeing when I change one out is around 50-60k. It's a great video and like I said a great work around just wanted to point out that if you can do everything in this video and you've got an extra $50 and about ten more minutes you can do the same fix the dealership does and still retain the proper function of the mechanism.

I’ve a different problem and I was wondering if you or any of the commenters have came across it. My drivers side mirror seems to do what it wants. Shoots all the way up or down. I tried pressing my preset buttons to see if it would go back but no luck. So I have to reset and save mirror setting every morning. Drivers side boy passenger. I did a factory reset but no luck. Turn off easy exit feature and still no luck. It’s the crazy thing. But there’s a GMC forum about it and lots of people complain about it. Just no one has found a solution it seems. So if anyone has any thoughts, comments or is expediting the same thing please let me know thanks!!

Have a 2017 Malbu only has 16000 KM started getting the shift to park error couple of months ago so I don't think the mileage has anything to do with it. Tend to think voltage and weak switch is the real problem. I am going to do this fix as it seems correct the problem permanently.
@ExoticCarDIY
Жыл бұрын
I think that is the common theory on the forums, they're running too much voltage through a micro switch and it just fries it over time. It's just so weird that it's such a redundant switch anyway, and it has zero effect on anything other than producing an air on the dash. At least that's true in the acadia, if you do it on your car report back after doing the test like I put in the description

There's a lot of comments, lot of people with many different year cars and even different models including Cadillac etc that have all successfully fixed the issue with this mod. I think the main difference is some of them people have been able to get the console off much easier, and occasionally the wires are different colors. If there's any question on which wires, you can literally just look on the side of the shifter and follow them to switch

I just bought a 2018, even though I think the Acadia's are a joke I still like them overall, I know their typical issues now after owning a 2009, unfortunately that one hit 200K miles and it was like a VW, once one thing goes wrong, everything started breaking or going bad. They really need to ditch the 3.6L pos engine and bring back the 3.8L V-6, those engines were bulletproof, and simple. Unlike todays engines they got sensors to tell windshield wipers when rain is on the windshield for crying out loud🙄

EC DIY, I am pondering this. What if you used a momentary button switch. You shift to park, get the message and push the button, maybe. If the ECM needs the signal without interruption it won't work. I'll have the car this Friday and test it and see what happens. In addition, since who knows where the wires from the micro really go I would just jump across the terminals at the switch rather than at the connector. Did you ring out that pin to see if it relates to the motion of the switch. Thanks.

Almost 100,000 views, I'm sure several thousand have done it, and most have commented. So far not one single drawback. In fact it might be a little easier than the video, most people say they are able to reach the plug without removing the shifter which is kind of the trickiest part. Just make sure that you're using a paper clip that does not have a plastic coating, and it has good penetration into those holes so it doesn't fall out and you're all good man!
