Very good questions. If I had to guess why they we don't have synchromesh transmissions here is mainly because most drivers don't want to have to use the clutch to shift. It is harder to power shift a car simply because of the synchros. The synchros are trying to slow the gear down to match the road speed, which when shifting a big truck transmission you would accomplish by either double clutching, or waiting between shifts when floating. This is also why it's harder on a synchro transmission.

People use the clutch in cars because they are synchronized transmissions in cars. In American big trucks the transmissions are not synchronized, and they also have straight cut gears. (Cars have helical cut gears) Much easier and faster to shift without the clutch. Big truck clutches are also solid disc clutches. They're not meant to be slipped much at all. Again, another reason to shift without the clutch. That and double clutching will wear out your leg in no time.

@Leprechaun_of_Maryland

There aren't any synchronizers in the transmission, so you have to do the part of the synchronizer and synchronize the speed of the input shaft with the correct corresponding gear you wish to use
@ChaplainC
12 жыл бұрын
I am not sure if you are joking or not, but in case you are serious... Big rigs have significantly different transmissions and clutches in them. They do not have syncros in them, ergo the gears do not line up on their own. SO to line them up you have to double clutch. The other choice is to shift slowly and with good timing. You pull it out of gear, wait for the desired gear to line up,& slide it in. It is easy once you learn. Can do it in a car too, if you wanted. Syncros = easier to shift:)

To understand the reason truck mfg's don't use synchro's you need 2 understand exactly what syncr's do. They work like a brake does, in a downshift they work opposite. They use brass rings that can and do wear out over time. with the amount of mass and torque that go thru a semi trans they would wear out real fast. To shift a trans without syncro's you have to have clutch out (or engaged) in neutral so as engine speed changes so does the input shaft of the trans.

@Leprechaun_of_Maryland

Dude😂 there's no synchros in that transmission. That's why dumptrucks and semis have a clutch brake. The only ones that have synchronizers in it are what we call a "straight six," which is a 6-speed transmission like you'd find in a car. I didn't even know those existed until I came to work for the state. Other than that, no other transmission with a higher gear count has synchronizers in it

@john587ful

Actually man i am a truck driver, most drivers don't use the clutch for the simple fact that the Eaton Fuller transmission isn't supposed to be clutched, the only reason for most drivers using the clutch is starting, stopping, and the free travel in the clutch to shut the jake brake on and off instead of flipping the switch. It isn't recommended that u use the clutch because that is actual wear on the clutch bearing and springs and the clutch itself, and it can wear your tranny out in a hurry.

Another thing that's interesting is this whole thing about helical vs. straight-on gears. Well, the reason that consumer vehicles have helical gears is to reduce noise, right? Okay, well why don't they do that in these big trucks too? But even then, what does the tooth cut have to do with how easy they are to shift, when you aren't actually meshing the teeth during shifting anyway--but just meshing dog-tooth rings?

@MrPhil0267
8 жыл бұрын
It looks like this driver is using the clutch each time he shifts. I have four questions. 1) Does the driver have to push the clutch in order to start the truck? 2)Isn't it bad to use the clutch each time the driver shifts gears? 3) Isn't it best to shift according to RPM? Will the weight of the trailer cause a truck with an automatic transmission to snap out of gear? This is what I have always heard. And 4) Are big rigs with automatic transmissions reliable and durable? Thanks....
@caasiwms
7 жыл бұрын
MrPhil0267 1) yes, unless the clutch safety switch has been removed. 2) no, not bad, just not the most convenient for the driver. No ill effect on the truck. 3) with an unsychronized transmission, you have no choice but to "shift according to RPM". It doesn't matter if you are floating gears or double clutching, it will not go into gear unless you rev match rpms. 4) i think most drivers would argue that standards transmissions are preferred for their control/usability. You have much greater control over the drivetrain with a standard. But automatics are much simpler to operate (boring in my opinion lol). As far as durability/reliability, I would say most truckers also argue standards are more durable/reliable, but automatics aren't necessarily "weak". Most well maintained autos will last almost as long as a standard. Hope this helps

Newer trucks are fine to clutchless shift. The truckers I know are all driving older trucks they are renting out, and they need to use the clutch because syncros back then are not what syncros are today. Since most truckers on the road are driving older style trucks, its fair to say most use the clutch. Im not saying everyone does, but its largely a myth that ALL truckers do clutchless shifting. And why wouldn't big truck clutches be made to slip much, even though that's the point of a clutch, and especially when most of your slipping is done during start-off anyway (since during shifting, the clutch is engaged more quickly than during take-off)? How is it supposedly "much easier and faster" to shift without using the clutch in one of these big trucks than with double-clutching, if it looks like double-clutching enables you not to have to figure out your rev matching?
