God this brings back memories lol , I started out with a Class B and went to work driving a KW T-800 Tri Axle Dump Truck for a company called Brown Trucking here in Birmingham AL. I ended up getting my Class A and am now driving a 2017 Peterbilt 579 and of course it's a 10 speed. I have a dedicated drop & hook run to Lake City Georgia and work 4 day work weeks,but my old boss hit me up wanting me to help him out this coming Saturday and for the life of me I couldn't remember the gear pattern of that ol T-800 😂, so rather than my old boss having a field day laughing at my ass because I forgot how to drive an 8 speed I decided to check out KZitem and found this. Lol thanks so much for this video bro!

I wouldn't pick on his driving at all. He's not a trucker driver, he's a boss/operator that can get in a truck and make it go if he has to. He does alright for no more time than he spends in a truck.

Downshifting can be tricky till you master it. Easy to get lost in the gears if you aren't used to doing it. One trick is the same speed you upshift in you also downshift in.(ie:25mph=5th gear) New drivers are taught to shift by watching the tachometer and mph rather than by the SOUND of the engine. This way you can see what speed you were going when upshifting to the next gear. When downshifting,bring the rig back down to that same speed to move back in that same gear.

@25mfd I'll try to remember this trick when I'll drive some trucks at my truck school, sound like a great idea. Maybe I'll put it in practice when the time comes.

Excellent vid :-) The days of many geared big rigs (10-12-15 speed road rangers) are decreasing I'd suggest. Tiptronic transmissions are increasing and so they should be. They remove the number of parts than can be manipulated and subjected to stress by more inexperienced drivers (not like the excellent driver of this rig). Or in other words wear and tear on gearboxes and clutches are a thing of the past with tiptronic transmissions. The complete drivetrain has less wear and tear = less expnses

I forgot to add that sooner or later, big rigs will have 'paddle-shift' levers on the steering wheels as well so that there will be no need for the driver to take their hands off the steering wheel to change gear. This technology is already being developed and tested in Europe so I am unaware of technological developments in America. However as in America there is a huge market for truck technology 'paddle-shifting' Kenworths are only just around the next bend in the highway folks.

Question for you bud. I just drove a kenworth dumptruck this weekend and I found some of the shift to be alittle stiff. Ive got a cat engine in it and its an 8spd LL. I ve been shifting around the rpm range of 13 to 17. Does that sound about right to you or should i be a rpm or 2 higher?
@northernchicken
11 жыл бұрын
shift 1 thru 5 in low range, pull the range selector up shift 6 thru 10 in hi range. basically shift a 5 speed twice. most 10 speeds the difference between gears is about 500 rpm. if you can count down from 10, you can down shift it. a super 10 you split every gear like a 2 speed rearend. 1 lo, 1hi etc.

if you want to see some REALLY amazing big-truck shifting skills, check out "Kenworth W900L 3 stick shifting" posted here on KZitem. I was trying to find someone who can explain how to do this. I've been trucking for 20 years, but never had opportunity to drive anything like this guy in the W900L. After 20 years of 1 sticking it, I don't know if I could get the hang of double or triple sticks, but I know there are still people that still have them and use them everyday. My hats off to you all.

All that guy did in that video was make one stick for High/Low, one for the splitter, and the other for shifting from gear to gear.

The only time I have even seen a few is when it comes to up north in the big cities where space is at a premium when it comes to turning.

If I were test driving him for my co. with 38 yrs. in trucking, I would tell him to shift that truck a lot smoother or you'll be down the road! No pun intended. The guy just really ain't that good, but then most drivers out there now suck pretty bad. Very few of us old school guys left...

Thom Dolph All I hear on the tube is old timers complaining about costs and cheap frt yada yada. But they all probably drive old school fuel guzzling un aerodynamic trucks because they look cool.This is 2015 They got trucks now that have no clutch or stick and can go up and down fully loaded on mountain grades without switching to manual. They can also match the road speed of a vehicle in front on cruise and slow down or speed up as needed keeping proper following distance with radar. And they run cleaner then the air of most major cities in the US. Now days you can look cool and impress yourself with your shifting abilities or you can put money in your pocket and not in the tank.

+SuperBigblue19 one thing I would like to informs you on , since you may not know by the way you have commented. Every Diesel engine out there if in good working order . Ie no burnt oil rings and so on. Then once that engine is at optimal running temp these engines are so clean burning it's not funny. Hence why if you didn't pass the early e test for diesel all would do is bring the temp up then pass. So really your comment is not that valid. Also I really think a driver should be able to shift properly . I drive and am a mechanic and I can tell you I have no use for auto transmissions. I ve had more problems with them what a person would know what to do with. Now I can't comment on 2015 2016 production trucks but I have experience with many other type autos. Clutch no clutch straight auto with paddle override. I feel these auto transmissions take away the bonuses of what a stick can help in certain situations. Plus general freight is way! To cheap, but that load brokers and ownersfau

+william Delarge You may have no use for them but many CEO's seem to. A small fleet may not be able to afford the upfront cost. But more and more larger fleets do. 1 large fleet has seen a 1mpg per truck difference. With the number of trucks they have they are saving $22.25 million a year in fuel costs.A single O/O could save $5.500 a year driving a autoshift at $2 per gl. So with improved aero package and fuel consumption, unless you are running specialized ops. As a business you are paying a lot of money to look cool driving a old school truck.
