I already had a Hollowtech 2 bottom bracket and Shimano cranks. So I just figured it would work. I think if you have a standard threaded bottom bracket it would probably work. It comes with the spacers needed. Just make sure you read the instructions for how many spacers you need on each side.

I use the M5100 in a 1×11 setup. For those who want to use this with a cassette 11-46t or smaller be aware that you can not use the stopper plate. This is designed for the use with an 11-51t. Following, using the b-screw without the stopper plate CAN damage the hanger pad because of the bad angle it will have upon meeting. It will work but takes some creativity;). I would not advice a cassette smaller than 11-46t though. A GS derailleur would be better.

Thanks for the video. I just received my m5100 groupset in the mail. I was also worried about the chain because it didn’t come with a quick link. I was going to ask you how you handled that. I didn’t know if I can just push the existing pin into place. The chain was delivered pre broke (not connected). The chain I received is 114 links. I’m worried it might not be long enough for 32T chainring with 51T cassette. Did you have to remove or add any links after installing the quick link? I have a small frame with 27.5” tires so hopefully 114 links will be long enough.
@phlr
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah you should be able to pickup a quick link at your local bike shop. That will be the easiest way to do it. The chain is indeed 114 links from Shimano and also comes pre broke. I followed another video on sizing a chain on KZitem and I did end up removing I think it was 5 links. There should be enough chain to work since you want a snug fit to avoid chain drops.
@mtbbiker6401

Thanks. I did some chain calculations according to park tool website and I should be okay. Park tool adds 2 links (1 inch) for the derailleur but according to shimano dealer manual on website they have you add 4 links (2 inches) for the rd-m5100. Most likely because it’s an extra long cage. Still waiting on the rest of my parts to arrive before I attempt the install. Tx505 are made to accommodate a 10s cogs at max. Fitting tx505 with 11s cogs will either: the locknut ring will make a contact with your frame, or the 11s cogs will not fit entirely in your freehub body. The best way is to measure your freehub body, disregard the spline spacing near the hub. An 11s cogs should measure around 36.8mm.

I disagree about it being useless. Range is not what I needed. I have plenty of range still and I got what I wanted which was simplicity. No gears in the front means not crossing the chain ever and no chain drops. I also now have room for a dropper post which I'm hoping to upgrade to in the future.
@mtbbiker6401

I went with a 1x to save weight. If you plan on using 50t at back and 3 gears up front as you state, your rear derailleur may not be able to compensate for the chain growth required to run such a wide range. Then you have to be careful not to shift into the wrong gears.
