Keep up the great work Shane! I am installing GRX DI2 here in the UK on a Shand gravel bike and following every step of the way. My cockpit is a little busier with cross levers and a sprint shifter but the principles and lessons learned from your journey with DI2 have been so valuable. ST SLane’s wiring plan was genius too and set me off on the right path 👍👍👍😃

2 sprinters switches are lighter and endlessly cleaner when installed. I find it easier to mount the switch first than route and secure the wire. Sprinters switches would work better with an internally routed bar.

Great job, and this is the real advantage of electronic shifting, the buttons are customisable setting to how you want it. I have tried a couple of the electronic systems, and was underwhelmed, It didn’t feel like I had something better on the bike that gave it that extra edge (for more money and more weight) so put the mechanical on, and I am happy, all that wiring and firmware stuff is just another complication to me, as I see it, I have enough of that with all the other stuff I have clipped on the bike.

Awesome video Shane. I have Di2 forever now (it seems that way away LOL). I too have this climbing shifter although for me because I have the first gen of the hydro non series STI and those stupid levers didn't come with any spare plugs, my bike shop had to order in a 5 port junction box (that sits under the stem) so I could use the climbing shifter (I can't use the sprint shifters since they have to be plugged directly into the STI's which they can't on my levers). Thankfully the mechanic who works on my bike (that I know quite well) was very good at hiding all of the wiring underneath the bar tape (and there is a lot of that). I did take my climbing shifter to the extreme and put some hockey stick tape on the zip ties (to of course smooth out the air flowing over it although of course this is a placebo effect of my brain staying this when in reality it does nothing for the air). I still have to buy the new battery (that has memory built in that your bike came with) so I can get synchro shifting for my DA and than the same D-Fly unit that you have so I can update the component firmware and re-program my system like you do in these videos but right now I am saving for a new trainer that I mentioned in a previous comment on a previous video (the battery and D-Fly unit will have to wait until I get back out on my road bike in the spring or whenever as I am so busy on Zwift that I had to write a schedule for myself as I have rides everyday and sometimes twice or even three times a day which is crazy [last week I clocked up over 436 KM and I have already flown past the 10,000 calorie mission that was put up at the beginning of this month]). Anyway sorry for the long comment. Hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy your new bike (it looks so cool and I am so jealous). Thank you for sharing it with us all.

Done it! I’m a tech anyway so much of this stuff is pretty normal for me. There are still plenty of gotcha’s though, so it did need a lot of care to make sure I got the right bits, the battery in particular nearly caught me out as there is an older non BT compatible one still being sold. One question, can you get di2 battery status on the Bolt? On mine all I can see is the graphic of gears and the actual gear, no mode or battery level, or do they materialise once paired? (It’ll be a couple of weeks before the bits get to me)

Rhys Leach you could, but there’s probably no more empty slots left on the shifters. You probably have to add another small junction box... bit things are getting a bit too crowded already. Did you know that there is a button under the hood of each shifter that could also be programmed to do whatever one needs. Actually each button has 3 modes. Single click, double click, and click and hold... so the possibilities are endless. Most people use those to change pages on their Garmin/ Wahoo, but you can operate headlights or use them to change gears - front or back.

I have a Canyon Ultimate CF SL Disc Di2 Aero factory fitted with Shimano Ultegra R8070 Hydraulic shift/brake levers, bar end junction and an internal battery installed in the down tube instead of the seat tube. I also have the one-piece integrated stem-handlebar. The issue is that BOTH Di2 ports on the right shift/brake level are used and the only available port is on the left shift/brake lever. I installed the climbing shifter on the right side of the handlebar but ran the wire over to the left shifter/brake lever to the only available port. The wire was stretched but it works. Any idea why Shane's bike has only one port used on the right lever, while mine as both ports occupied?
@Tchairdjian
5 жыл бұрын
Hsien Wei Tan in Australia the front and back shifters are swapped. Left is rear, front is on the right. On mine, in Canada, the wire from the down tube went all the way to the Bar end control unit on the right.... and then I pulled a wire from the control unit to the right shifter. Then another wire from the right shifter to the left shifter, leaving one unused port on the left shifter. Also I put a heat shrink tube around the rear brake hose and the Di2 cable which are both going to the down tube together so everything looks nice and tidy. In Australia, to do the same, you need to locate the bar end control unit on the left side. Also if you want to have an empty port on the right shifter, then run a cable from the bar end unit to the left shifter, then run another cable from the left shifter to the right shifter.... very flexible.

Request. Can you do something for those of us who have say a Shimano 105 groupset, want to go electronic and keep as much of existing kit as they can? In my case I have a Cannondale synapse carbon about year 2016 I think. I just bought a Quark Dzero power meter / crankset, so want to keep that, other than that I'm up for upgrading it to electronic. I am in no way a pro cyclist, I'm doing this for the tech fun more than anything else. I can do the research I know, but I thought that there would be a fair few others interested in this sort of upgrade?

It all comes down to what I can get a hold of. The majority of what I talk about I buy, so it's not possible to cover everything. I'll talk to Shimano over at the TdU. These videos are doing well.

I upgraded a 2007 Moots to Di2 in 2015. The minimum parts required are: front & rear derailleur, both shifter levers, a battery mount, a junction box (not sure if that is still needed), the control box, Di2 cables that are the right length for: 1) shifters to control box (2 of those), 2) control box to junction box 3) battery to junction box, 4) junction box to front derailleur, 5) junction box to rear railroader. That was all externally routed and I did it myself (very easy to do really). There are some shops that sell upgrade kits ready to go--just ensure that you are getting the Di2 cable lengths that you need. Better to have a little too long than too short. The shifters and junction box have some allowance for looping excess cable. But if they are too short, there is nothing to do except order new cables. My newest bike is a Colnago C-RS that has all internal cable routing. The control box fits in the end of the handle bars (same as with Shane's Giant) and the Di2 cables are all hidden except for a short run to the front derailleur and a short run to the rear derailleur. That was the way I bought that bike in 2018. I expect there is still a rear junction box somewhere near the BB.

@@dangurtler7177Thanks. After a day's research I'm pretty sure I have what I need nailed now. Yes the A box seems to have two options, one (neater) in the tube and one under the front stem and the B box which appears to be just a parallel wired junction box which is still needed. Unfortunately the front stem version of the A box is the one supplied in all the kits I've seen! The bit that I have mixed answers on is whether the kit front derailleur is 'braise on' or clamp. The Shimano web site appears to state that they are all braise, but the supplier (Wiggle UK) says that its clamp (I'm pretty sure that they are wrong and have emailed to clarify), it takes weeks to get stuff to me and I have a difficult return route so I need to be sure before I buy....

Is it only me who thinks this is a complete rip off, $100 for a basic switch! It doesn't even seem very high quality, but maybe that is because they have gone for lightweight over flashy design but then it is held on with cable ties! For that kind of price I would expect a far more streamlined solution. In technology terms you can get a low end smart phone for that kind of money and someone could makes something nicer for $20 with a profit margin included. At this point in time I would expect DI2 to be rolling down, especially considering SRAM has a wireless system that at least in my opinion is far more the future than wires instead of cables, even if the performance is equal.

seems like a massive scam... Shimano knows that people will want these and so they can set the price to be anything they like, its just two ordinary buttons and a wire... probably doesn't even cost 5$ to manufacture... It's a really cool thing to have on a bike but it's way too overpriced for what it is...

I've got a manual 105 groupset. It works flawlessly, except… : - when very cold, with big gloves, I mis shift with the right trigger. If you want to shift down (small lever) and move accidentaly the Up Shifter (big lever), it will not shift. It happens to me 50% of the time. - when it's very hot like hell, and I sweat a lot, my left fingers just slips on the left shifter to go from small to big chainring. Hard to shift up. Electronic stuff can avoid these situations.
