Why Sandra?! You were in the Himalayas. Himalayas are huuuuuge... It will take months to explore only Northern part of Indian Himalayas. Just imagine highest peak of Alps is 15000 feet and we have 8 peaks in India above 21000 feet.. Places like Sarahan, Kalpa, Kinnaur, Chitkul, Sangla etc are heaven on Earth and ofcourse Kashmir has spellbinding beauty.. The fun fact is, in the Himalayas even if you stand at 10000 feet above sea level, you still need to raise your head up to see a snow range😊... It is that massive...

The United Kingdom. Thanks for an excellent video Shimla looks beautiful and I hope to be visiting May 2023. I can understand your enthusiasm for the Himalayas, I was born in India our family was from England my father was stationed in India during the British Raj and I was the last of the Raj. I went to boarding school in Darjeeling in the Himalayas so I too have a great connection with India and the Himalayas. I have been traveling back to India on a regular basis for 50 years and have covered most of the country from Kashmir in the North to Kanyakumari South - Diu in the West- to Sikkim - Meghalaya in the East and most places in between. I do speak "street" Hindi and have done a solo motorcycle ride from Odisha to Darjeeling -Gangtok - Nepal. I usually spend 6 months every year traveling in India. I shall seek out your other videos on India. Thanks again. Keep on Keeping on.

Hi August, since you are from a generation which actually saw the Raj, how did your family view the natives and what were you taught about the Natives and has your opinion regarding them change during the last seven decades . I would like a non Politically Correct answer. Most of the records of the Empire are from books. Would love to know a real account of a colonial family.
@augustsky6248
Жыл бұрын
@@imperatorisservihominis4410 The British relationship with India would be of a different quality from those it had with it other colonies. India was always the “Jewel in the Crown.” Intermarriage between Britons and Indians was encouraged it served a purpose whereby Anglo-Indians born of such relationships would serve in various positions such as Railways, Police Forces and lower grade civil servants with the interests to serve the British government. Many Britons emigrated permanently to India where they set up home, started families and raised dynasties. !858 the relationship between Britain and India moved into its most intense phase: the raj. Across great expanses of India, the maharajas, rajas and nawabs would be left in charge, with only a British Resident present in their capitals to keep an eye on things. The landowners and princes propped up by the British enjoyed almost unlimited power, and consequently felt no need to challenge the British raj. “The English have not taken India” wrote Gandhi succinctly in 1908; “we have given it to them.” In 1858, Queen Victoria proclaimed “We hold ourselves bound to the “natives” of our Indian territories….” Young Britons would often serve a tour of duty in India, either on military or civil service. It was easy for these fellows to get used to the luxuries to which a white skin and the low cost of living entitled them. Attitudes hardened, rather than liberalized, as the Empire went on; Indians were commonly referred to as “natives” in the eighteenth century (by the way a term which continued to be used in the 20th century in many foreign travel documentaries, probably “woke”) “coolies” by the end of the nine-teenth, and “niggers” by the beginning of the twentieth. By the late nineteenth century, the cream of Indian society began to enjoy its British connections. Fashionable Indians went to Oxford and Cambridge for their education and London for their tailoring. The Indian upper classes found it hard to reconcile their proud Anglophile upbringings with the reality of their exclusion. At Eton, Harrow or Winchester, they identified themselves with the gilded youth of glorious empire. By the way, we never ever referred to Indians as "natives" yes we had several servants but they all had names which we respected. We were indeed very close-knit as the servants were in total charge of the children and we spent more time with them than our parents in this respect, their was a very close bond. We had living quarters for them so we grew up as a family. I went to a boarding school which had a wide mixture of Europeans; Indians; Anglo-Indians and Nepalese. All my close friends were Indians.

I'm from Solan, Himachal Pradesh, India. It's just 50kms from Shimla. And whenever I hear people saying India is dirty n all I'm always feeling like why do all the tourist visit those side of India. They should come to Himachal and see the beautiful and cleanliness over here. People here are very curious to know from where these foreign tourists are and people here are innocent and shy. India is truly beautiful if explored properly. maximum of the tourist visit those places which is famous and all dirty. But India has very other good places like Himachal Pradesh, uttrakhand, Kashmir, Leh Ladhak. If anyone ever visit Solan I'm happy to show you all around. Love from India 🇮🇳

So glad you had a great time in Shimla! It is a really lovely place, especially if you manage to snag a hotel a bit up in the mountain, away from the rattles of the busy roads ahahaha If you want to experience the snow-capped Himalayas up close, I would recommend you visit Manali, stay for a day or two, and then head over to Sissu or Keylong via the Atal Tunnel. It will lead you from the lush forest mountains of Manali to ice topped Himalayan mountains of Lahaul valley in barely a 2-hour commute. The journey from Manali to the tunnel is so so picturesque, and if you wish, you can do a small layover at the Solang Valley because it happens to be in the middle of Manali and Atal tunnel. Be cautious though, especially in these months, as the roads often get closed due to snow and you can get trapped there. The tunnel itself can be closed due to snow pile-up (only based on info the locals told, can't say for sure if it's true) so if you wish to travel, you will really need to be on a flexible schedule and have backup plans to ascertain a nice journey. I visited Sissu in late November and even then without hand gloves, you wouldn't be able to walk outside at night or mornings. And you had these tall mountains framing the small town on two sides, capped with snow leading to a waterfall easily visible from various vantage points in the village, even the balcony of the hotel I stayed at hahahha oh and the beautiful river Chandra! I would recommend if you plan to visit, do it in late October (you can experience a beautiful yellow autumn) to early December period ( you have the opportunity to experience snowfall without the risk of getting trapped there for weeks to months). another option is, you stay in Manali and with the aid of a local service, book a cab that can take you up to the Rohtang La pass. there you get to be on snow-capped mountains and play with snow even in the hot summer months hahahhaha Usually they arrange it in you go there in the morning and return by evening kind of trip. Beware of potential scams though :"C

Out of curiosity, what time of the year were you there ? Also, not only Shimla but the entire state of Himachal Pradesh has banned plastics for almost 20 years now. If you go the market and buy fruits, you will not find any plastic bag but paper bags. Also, many cities in India have English architecture especially in the hills as the British could not bear the summer heat of the plains, so they created these cities in the middle of nowhere.

Thankyou for going to the Indian coffee house by the end of the video. I went there in May, 2022 and had a coffee, it was a really cold and windy day, I loved that coffee and the experience.

Real problems of India facing are posters , advertisement on the roadside,free moving cattles, and spitting on the road unhigiene. Al-Biruni the Iranian traveller said in his travelogue India is a clean and beautiful country ,before the British invasion.Above all India is a land of wonder , beautiful and mystic.

You should have visited Lower Bazar and areas below the Cart Road. That is real Shimla. Mall Road is maintained that way for tourists. And yes, The Viceregal Lodge/ Indian Institute of Advanced Studies is the true colonial treasure.
