OMG you just made my year. My M1A stopped cycling 25 years ago when I let a friend shoot it. Afterwards he cleaned it etc. After that it never functioned again. I have been trying to fix the issue. I narrowed it down to the gas block. Never before have I heard the words spindle valve. I checked mine a d it was closed. Problem solved. Many many thanks.

*HOLLY CRAP!* That's it? All this material I've read about shimming the gas cylinder made it sound like such a detailed, time consuming, complicated process. I can't believe it's that easy. I also watched your *Draw Pressure/Hand Guard Clearance* & *Gas Cylinder Tightening* videos. Everything was allready good to go for me there. Just need to shim my gas cylinder. Double kudos to your videos. I'm ordering a shim kit from Fulton Armory right now.

Ok I shimmed my rifle once with the action in the stock.Made the gas system nice and firm, FB was firm and the GL timed just right.But when I remove the action from the stock everything mentioned above became loose.So I then re-shimmed the gas cylinder again without the stock , Now everything is nice and firm in the stock or out of the stock.

I purchased a norinco m14/305. The stock is loose front to rear when assembled I have 1/8”+ of play in the stock. The receiver is loose. I believe the problem is in the gas valve position on the barrel. Your video explains how to adjust it, I’m removing the nylon stock and replacing it with a USGI stock from Fred’s. I repaired the loose oprod guide block and installed the nm oprod with the wolf heavy duty spring. The fitting of the new stock and adjusting the position of the gas port is next, I don’t think this m14 has ever been shot. Thanks to you and your videos it should be up and operating soon. Thanks

Thanks for the great video. I have a question though. I just picked up a Norinco M305 and it seems the flash hider is spot welded on, in addition to the castle nut/ pin. Ive seen a video of a guy hammering the flash hider, breaking the welds to remove it. I considered trying, but then i thought, could I not just shim it between the stock and the band? I had a thin washer/gasket that fit well so I gave it a try. The lock tightens up fairly close to where the video reccomends though I may thin out the gasket a bit with some filing or grinding. The band is nice and snug. Still all metal to metal contact and i dont have to smash off the welds. I'd love to do it the right way, but would this be an acceptable work around for those of us with welded on flash hiders?

You might want to unitize the gas cylinder by tigging the band to the gas cylinder(USMC way) or by annealing the gas cylinder valve and attaching the band with screws (Army way). Just ny 2 cents, great info about timing, Semper Fi.

Hey tony, just a quick question. I just got a M1A loaded and was wondering if this was a form of tightening or "unifying" the gas system? Or are those permanent methods like welding? Thanks!

Shimming is different that unitizing. Unitizing permanently mates the front band and gas cylinder using either screws or welding. Tony.

Thanks for the informative videos. I shimmed my M1A and it left a visible gap between the op rod tip and the gas piston tip. Is that an issue?
@tonyben3
10 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's an issue. It sounds like you shimmed it too much. I'll bet your gas cylinder was very tight to go on and you had one turn left to go. Take the shims off and start again. The op-rod NEEDS to contact the piston when all the way forward. If you don't get it sorted out, go to the M14 forum and post your problem. Tony.

My gasblock alignment is off. My rifle is having short stroke issues. Saw your video and tried to place an Allen wrench through with the gas port hole and was unable to get it into the barrel so clearly it is not lined up correctly could I remedy this by just setting the gas block just a little further rear word or forward? Or perhaps shimming it?

Check to see if there's a gap between the barrel shoulder and the front band. If there's a gap, your gas cylinder is not seated far enough. Check out my disassembly/assembly video and it shows how to properly seat your gas cylinder back as far as it will go. Tony.

@stevejames3292

Tony, Great videos! I have a question for you. My front band was loose so I bought shims to shim the had block but I discovered that wasn't the problem. The front band is tight and the gas lock is roughly at 5:30, a little less but it can be positioned by hand. When I tighten down the the gas block nut the band loosens up. I removed the gas block but and discovered that there is .007 gap between the gas block where the piston goes and the gas lock when it's tight. This does not seem right to me. I would like to know your thoughts on this situation. Thank you.

I did find pitting surrounding the gas port on the barrel. The gas block does not have any rotational movement from play in the splines. I am waiting on some castle nut pliers to remove flash hider. I will then check both gas lock and has block to see if either is not flat where they mate up. The gas lock is definitely not seating flush all the way around the barrel portion of the gas block.

So the gas lock threads are 20tpi, that's .050" per revolution so from 6 o'clock to 11 o'clock is .020".Also never a good idea to use a gas lock that has been installed before in the other direction; it's like turning a ferule the other way around. Bad for the threads on the barrel; better to use a new gas lock if you absolutely must.

Great vid. But instead of buying shims and possibly having to change shims out as they wear, and worrying about gas hole alignment and the fact that shimming the band forward then loosens its grip on the front of the stock. Just stone down the gas lock until it times correctly. Problem solved. The gas hole location will not move, the pressure on the front of the stock won't loosen, and there will be no shims to ever worry about again.
@tonyben3
8 жыл бұрын
The issue with that is that you move the piston back when you do that and there is a remote possibility of the gas port in the piston not lining up with the gas port in the gas cylinder. You can't really check that on the bench. You'd have to test it on the range. Plus, you shorten your dwell time which is not ideal for accuracy. Tony.
@MotoJunkie23

+tonyben3 Shouldn't have to worry about dwell time or gas hole alignment as the rifle was designed to have the barrel band shoved back against the shoulder. Not shimmed forward.
