The amazing Scottish ex- calmac Ferry "The Suilven"! An amazing faithful old girl, who rode the waves so well. Sad that she sunk in a Fiji bay on a calm day! Old girl just had had enough, and gave up!

This happened on Waitangi Day 2002 caused by a slow moving storm off the east coastof NZ. Absolutely amazing swells of 10 - 13 meters were recorded in Cook Strait. Wellington's South Coast does get big wave events - sometimes every year. Waitangi Day and June 20 - 21 2013 are the top biggest events in recent times

I was on board, and never saw so many sick people on that few square mtrs before. White faces. Fish and chips, red wine, it all came out again. The captain stayed very calm, and gave a very good suggestion, breath in when the ship goes up, and out when it goes down.

I've crossed the Cook Strait between Wellington and Picton in a storm before on the InterIslander ferry. There was a over-size truck and crew on board. The crew were standing up at the start of the crossing but several large swells sent the entire heavy haul crew sprinting for the barf bags.

1983 I went over to Picton for the day with a friend and his parents. I was 5. I will never forget that crossing. Was one of the worst in 20 years that day or sonething

Look at THAT! What an adventure, I'd love to go on trips like that every month. I'd like to see jane macdonald go on some trips like that on her shows, she always makes it look so totally unrealistic, as if it was always dead flat calm. If only far more ferry trips were like this!

You are correct. It is the same Suilven that used to sail between Stornoway & Ullapool when it was in service with Calmac. I remember it well, the sailings across The Minch which could get just as bad. I was in the RAF posted up at Stornoway & there was an in house joke when we had had supply runs come over from RAF Kinloss as to whether the driver would get back to the mainland as Calmac would stop sailings if the weather got too bad. You couldnt forget sailing on her unlike Isle of Lewis today

great clip. I used to live in island bay and used to watch ferries heading out like that round the heads. serious shortage of sick bags on that ferry.

Good photography! A 4m swell is darned uncomfortable, and if it reaches 6m, the passenger ferries don't operate; but I think the freight ferries still run! With a crew of cast iron guts. Cook Strait can be glassy calm one day and a giant washing machine the next.

Old man use to sail on them weekly running line haul, back then they sailed on 8-9m swells.. worse sail he'd been on but back then they just did it. They had to wait 5 hours out the Wellington heads for the weather to calm down to get through the breaks to Wellington

Our great grandad [born 1875] was a boatbuilder in Ullapool-they must have made boats strong in those days, and they were wooden vessels..evidently the seas around Northern scotland get pretty fierce-I would hate to be in a ferry as rough as this..wailing kids, ill people [me included]-would be sheer hell:-(

Of course everyone says they have sailed in rougher conditions, but how many can back that up? Try the' Minch' or the 'Pentland firth' in Scotland;makes the Cook strait look like a mirror.

Well taken, Great footage!!! Are you the owner of this footage? Is it possible for me to use and upload this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, inland barge ships, navy, etc. Of course full credit and a link to your KZitem page will be given when I upload. If you want to talk this through via e-mail, that's also possible. My email is on my youtube page. I'm looking forward to your reply. Kind regards. Thanks!
