Ah, 'Sailing By'. When I was a lad and stayed over at my Nana's house she'd have the radio on quietly on the landing to fall asleep to, and when I heard 'Sailing By', safe and warm in the most comfortable bed I've ever slept it, I knew the lull of the oncoming forecast would put me into a good, sound sleep 😊

I listen every night after saying my prayers. I’ve tried others but I must hear Sailing By first , then Peter Jefferson’s voice. Sadly, I’ve never been across the pond. I live in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and your weather is dismal. Nevertheless I believe I could embrace the cold and drizzle and fog with the proper attire and a proper cup of tea!

You will always be welcome Carmen. I used to love listening to this as a young Boy, it always made me think of my Dad, he was a Merchant Seamen God Bless him.

I used to listen to the Forecasts as a child and am so pleased to have found this post. I think it's the fact that his voice is so perfect for a broadcast of this type, but it's the coziness of sitting in dimmed light listening to all these weird and wonderful and mysterious place names and imagining the trawlermen and others, braving the storms and the weather. This and the sound of a foghorn!

Perfect summary. I am exactly the same. Find it so romantic and comforting. Especially when in bed with the rain and wind hammering against my window. 😊

One of the very very best voices on the network ever. It would be a privilege to bump into him on the second floor tea trolley.

We grew up listening to this in the UK, I never knew where 99% of the places were until we were in our 60`s and we started😂 cruising.

No one reads the Ships quite like Peter Jefferson. The rest are just pretenders to the throne. ❤

Don't know why but to me this is an iconic sound like the chimes of Big Ben, and I was brought up in London but as a child a holiday wasn't a holiday unless it was at the seaside and it always reminds me of the large numbers of workers who used to work in the fishing industry often in very difficult conditions

It's a British Institution, and BBC Radio 4 would not be the same without it. Alvar Liddel (who was Swedish, but most people never realised), and decades later, Peter Jefferson, and later, Neil Nunes, have been some of the best male voices for BBC radio continuity announcers, and readers of the Shipping Forecast.
