How I wish I knew of Reb Shlomo in those days! I was extremely fortunate to meet and enjoy and learn from Reb Shlomo in later years. He opened my spiritual life for me. He touched my soul in such a wonderful, and unforgetable way. May Hashem bless his soul forever and a day!

This was shown on Israeli TV on September 29, 1971, the day after Yom Kippur. It was filmed at the entry to the Old City near David’s Citadel in Jerusalem. Reb Shlomo is accompanied by Avshalom Katz on the accordion and two guitar players. Shlomo began with a cantorial rendition of “Uvechen,” from the High Holiday liturgy for Musaf. Then he addresses the audience in Hebrew: “It is already time that there should be peace in the world, it is time for all of Am Yisrael to unite together with joy in a ‘complete building’ and we should sing together.” Then he sang “Samchem.” Shlomo concluded: “We are a holy people waiting all year long for Sukkot, for the day to leave our houses and enter the house of the Lord.” Then he sang the verse from Hallel (Psalms 118:24) “Zeh Hayom,” “Today is the day that God has created, let us rejoice.”

I saw Shlomo only two times--once when he came to Houston to the Rothko Chapel in the spring of 1979 (his hair was alrady white) and once unexpectedly when I was in Jerusalem that December. Unforgettable.

This Shlomo Carlebach recording took place between Yom Kippur and Sukkot after September 29th 1971 at the Churva Arched Gate in the old city of Jerusalem. Therefore it is not from September 29 stated by Natan Ofir as this would be on Yom Kippur day itself. It was recorded after Yom Kippur during the following days leading up to the Sukkot holiday.

This appears to be in front of the erstwhile arch in front of the ruins of The Hurva Synagogue in the "Jewish Quarter" neighborhood in Jerusalem's Old City. Rav Shlomo, zz"l, would have cried songs of utter joy had he lived to see the opening of the rebuilt Hurva Synagogue.

If this is erev Yom Kippur then it is Tuesday morning, September 28, 1971. In any case, this filming was organized by and for Israeli Television in front of the arch of the ruins of the Hurva Synagogue in the Jewish Quarter of the Old City in Jerusalem. Shlomo is accompanied by two guitar players and an accordionist
