The single version is a perfectly realized pop single. However, because of the title and the fact that Matt is a deejay, I felt that the 12" version would be more enjoyable. Speaking of singles, PSB's most recent single "Loneliness" is amazing. The full version (almost 6 min.) is the best thing they've done in awhile. Sounds very classic 80,s PSB to me.

I absolutely agree with you. Loneliness is a fantastic new single

Probably just me, but I prefer the more concise 7” version.

Not just you! A couple folks said that, though a few others insisted they like this longer cut. Will have to hear the 7" version eventually too.

Produced by them with Brothers In Rhythm, dance producers who went on to do great things, (most notably for me with Kylie). There is a backing singer you can hear, Tessa Niles, who's worked with so many people (notably Gary Numan, she's all over his mid t0 late 80's stuff) - at one point you hear just her voice on this version. Neil talks about how the song was partly inspired by the Gulf War ("imagine a war, which everyone won"), the rise of DJ culture and sampling, and the "brainless positivism" of music and culture, how people talk in empty catchphrases "Living in a satellite fantasy, waiting for the night to end". He also mentions Madonna (She after Sean) and Liz Taylor (Liz after Betty (Ford Clinic)) referencing how people could reinvent themselves. The "And I ,my Lord, may I say nothing?" like is is appropriated from what Oscar Wilde said at the end of his trial when he was just led away, unable to speak. He's arguing that with so much media and news people no longer have genuine responses to things, they just parrot what they think they should say. I'd say it's infinitely worse now. Probably too subtle and downbeat to be a really big hit but it's a bit of a gem that gets overlooked.

As usual, brillant background information. I just wanted to add that Tessa Niles did a lot of singing for Duran Duran as well, for example on "Come Undone".

@@finlybenyunes8385 Thank you SO much for pointing that out. I often think faster than I type and I'm a terrible typist. I really should check my illiterate comments for errors before I post them. It's now corrected so you can rest easy.

Another relatively unknown masterpiece from the PSB. I brought the CD single, bought in London, to Spain when I was on my twenties. What a rich, astonishing discography gosh! 😅

I love the slow groove of this track. Deep bass, great piano, the different sections. I feel the same way about this as I did The Concept of Roundness and Neuro-Umbilical Energy. This could just keep going! And there, Matt, I DID use the whole title!

I believe the revisit to the spoken verse style was down to Shep Pettibone asking them "when are you going to do another West End Girls?", meaning that style of delivery. Hey presto ! "DJ Culture" is born

I like the original version over the remixed. It wasn't a hit back then, yet very classy.

There is almost nothing from the original single version that wasn't on the extended version, maybe the single version has a better production in some parts of the song but some parts of the extended version are missed in the single version.

With your love of their sonics, and the PSB's wonderful deep base synth lines I highly recommend you check out the other extended/disco/dance mixes from the era you're coming near the end of. Like you say their output is insane and it will extend your deep dive but it's oh so worth it, this is the band that introduced me to the concept of the 12" mix. The disco mix of It's a Sin still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up as the intro breaks into the main song, if you thought the album version was epic.... trust me, you won't be disappointed!

DJ Culture wasn't originally from Behaviour but a stand alone single added to the later expanded edition. The next stand alone single was also from their first greatest hits collection "Discography", called "Was It Worth It?", and I was lucky enough to be in the small concert at the nightclub "Heaven" where they debuted it and clips from it were included in the official video. More on that when you react to that track

And according to Chris I think, they always tried to re-write West End Girls - hence the rap verse-sung chorus here as well! Wasn’t a huge hit, but it doesn’t make it any less PSB iconic sounding tune!❤

Hi Matt, "DJ Culture" was not a B-side but a single, released alongside the first best of album DISCOGRAPHY (1991). I put it into the BEHAVIOUR folder because it's from the tail-end of that era. Next song will be the B-side of the single, then another single and its B-side (this time the metadata is correct). The first batch of PSB studio albums up to 1996's BILINGUAL was rerelased in 2001, each album with a second "Further Listening" CD that contains B-sides, demo versions and PSB remixes. The second batch came in 2017, then they changed record companies. Since I put all the B-sides into the album folders, I collected all the different versions and remixes in the FL folders for each album, also taking different remixes from other releases (see metadata). Aaaaand then there are still the DISCO albums (in a separate folder). Loads and loads to enjoy. Btw I love "DJ Culture" for all the reasons you mentioned, though the shorter version is good enough for me.
