Morrissey and Marr think this is one of the best Smiths tracks and I would agree. It's a windswept epic, a monument to the misery of loneliness. I don't think it's just the isolation of being alone, it's the horrible feeling of isolation and loneliness even when you are with with others. The second verse clearly implies he felt "real arms around me" - it's the inability to find a real, genuine relationship, something one night stands can't fulfill. It being Morrissey he still manages a self-referential joke in the "this story is old" line, both meaning that this is an ongoing problem for the narrator but also that it's a subject Morrissey keeps returning to (How Soon Is Now?, I know It's Over and later a solo track "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday". The sombre piano at the start is backed by recording of striking miners from the mid-80's.I'm not sure if this is to make a political point or to emphasise the isolation of the protagonist. Eurythmics did a cover which is on the We Too Are One reissue.

The lyrics on this song is brilliant. Checkout Unhappy Birthday. I imagine Morrissey singing the song to himself while looking into a mirror then ultimately killing himself. Dark as dark could be.

This is Mozzer's miserablism at its best. It's so relatable. I do skip that intro though whenever I put it on a mixtape. I just realized what a relief it is once the singing starts (and the shouting ends). Maybe that was intentional? Mark mentioned the cover version by the Eurythmics. It sounds like a demo version in need of some proper production to me.

The whole album revolves around this song. That sixties anthem feeling, Lee Hazelwood/ Nancy Sinatra type of thing. 4 years after Hand In Glove, it’s Beatle-esque development. By the time I heard this track The Smiths were no more, but it gives a signal of what might have come had things been different.
