Just wondering? You know way way more about this stuff than I do, but is it worth considering to try a 12AT7, 12AY7, or 12AU7 just to see what different effects they have on the reverb response? I also love all of your amp repair videos, long ones and short ones alike.

ie. more current and lower impedance for drive like the AU7 with voltage gain of 100 for the recovery. I have seen this tube used for reverb like that on Hammond organs. The SQ variant is 7247.

What a shame ........ I've had several earlier HiWatts over the years and the construction of those were exemplary, the wiring looms were like those in military equipment and the things weighed a ton, they always had a really solid feel and the sound was loud and good.

Can I assume this is a capacitor-driven reverb? Because a transformer should have blocked DC voltage from passing through to the reverb tank ----- to be fair, a capacitor should do the same unless its shorted or seriously leaky....

Man, if that were my amp, I'd have you drill chassis-mount-matching holes in the top of that cab, get longer chassis screws, and mount the chassis to the cab that way. I suppose it's frowned upon to make that alteration to the original cab? You've NOT had a terribly fun time with this amp, I can tell!

Not sure that thing really qualifies to bear the HiWatt name. I know the brand is somewhat kicked around but the contents of that box are trading off something to which it barely pays lip service.

Speaking of reverb drivers, one question I’ve often had is: why is it OK to run an amp without the reverb tank attached? Wouldn’t the reverb transformer burn out just like the output transformer when no speaker is connected? Or is the current so much lower that it doesn’t matter? Thanks for your great videos.

If you see a 6EU7 in a tube amp, you really have to check the socket pinout because some people can think that it is a direct 12AX7 replacement. And true, you cannot get a decent reverb just by using two triodes, because you need both triodes of a 12AT7 or 12AU7 just to drive the tank well enough. Luckily you did not get zapped badly, I presume, if you did not even need to change underpants. 😜
@Satchmoeddie

Electrically the 6EU7 is a 12AX7 except for inter-electrode capacitances. The only reason those capacitances are not the same is because the pinout is not the same. The 6EU7 has a superior pinout to a 12AX7. Even to a 7025 the 6EU7 is still a better hi fi tube. Or it was. Today, not so much.

From all I've seen on this amp, it seems that this era of "Modesto" amps should be avoided unless one just includes taking it to a reputable tech in the price paid. If Hiwatt licensed these, I don't know whether to be surprised or appalled. Am I missing something here? My HiWatt Hi-5 is nothing to write home about either. It was cheap though.
@mikewithers299

Chances are it didn't come from the factory like that. Techs usually know not to change tube types without modifications to the tube sockets wiring. So it's anyone's guess how that 6 series tube got in there.

335 VDC.... Jeez! 😬 I really hope the owner just ditches the reverb on this. Hiwatts just don't seem to go well with reverb, or at least I can't think of any good references off the top of my head. Hopefully they'll opt for a nice analog delay unit instead.

I have two of these amps (77 and 81) and both have the plywood that goes across the top, but with an open rectangle in the middle for ventilation. The older ones are wide enough that you can screw them in from the sides and not touch the chassis at all.

@@soapboxearth2, I've been extra cautious ever since I got zapped pretty good while unplugging the RCA cable in a Danelectro amp with top mounted preamp/control panel and bottom mounted power supply. Any split-chassis amp should be viewed with suspicion, especially Dano-built Silvertones.

That was eye opening Lyle. I will keep that info handy when I do my West. It has reverb also, but I believe all preamp tubes are 12ax7's and one 12at7.
