One of the strangest facts about the Civil War is, we never had a Civil War. A "civil war" by definition is a conflict between two or more groups fighting for control of a country, such as happened in Spain, for example. The South was not fighting for control of Northern states. They were only fighting for their independence, just like the colonies fought England for their independence. The colonies were not fighting to control England. That also was not a civil war. Both were wars of independence, not civil wars.

The General Jefferson Davis bit did happen. It was at the battle of Chickamauga, September 1863. Several Union regiments of the Army of the Cumberland, the 22nd Michigan, 21st and 89th Ohio, are left behind by the retreating Union forces. In the dark, alone, and out of ammunition, the Union holdouts see men wearing blue uniforms approaching. The Union troops call out, "Who are you?" "Jeff Davis's boys!" came the reply. The Ohio and Michigan troops breathed a sigh of relief. They thought it was General Jefferson C. Davis, a division commander in 20th Corps of the Army of the Cumberland. To their horror, they were actually President Jefferson Davis's men, specifically General Longstreet's Corps of the Army of Northern Virginia, detached from Lee's Army to reinforce troops in the west. Just before Chickamauga, Longstreet's troops recieved new uniforms from Britain. Uniforms dyed in light shades of blue. They caused hesitation by the Yankees thinking they are comrades. This led to all three regiments being surrounded and captured. However, a volley erupted from the darkness. This phantom regiment got close enough to fire. No one knows who they belonged to. Bullets cut through the masses of troops. Confusion reigned. About half the Yankee prisoners make a run for it, escaping to Chattanooga. Half their comrades still remain prisoners, including their regimental colors. Most of these men would die in Confederate prisons.
