the sad reality of (North) America in the late cold war era is also captured by Neil Young in "Keep Rocking In The Free World".... still lots of people dont see the fantasy of today either, but its too real for some. I see a woman in the night With a baby in her hand There's an old street light (near a garbage can) Near a garbage can (near a garbage can) And now she put the kid away and she's gone to get a hit She hates her life and what she's done to it There's one more kid that'll never go to school Never get to fall in love, never get to be cool

This guy produced his own albums, he burns it up on the guitar. There's a few other hits on this album. His next album "Subject Aldo Nova" if you listen from the first note to the last, (the whole album, all the way through) it's pretty damn good. This guy also wrote one of Bon Jovi's hits (i don't remember which one) I'd recommend his second album, it's different. It's got that 80's energy, instrumentals, sound effects, moody, but at times soaring, powerful guitar, 'Africa/Primal sounds like elephants/transitions into 'Hold Back', Race Cars/Armageddon/Monkey on Your Back(another drug song) It's one of those albums if you hear it, you won't forget it.

Since Aldo is from Montreal Canada, he’s probably talking about the nightlife of Toronto (not Montreal), although this is really any big city, like NY, LA, Chi, Miami, and even though it’s not a big city, Hollywood for sure. So this song makes me think of the wild surreal life, where you’re high or drunk, and you’re out with your buddies doing crazy shit in the city. In the song it’s cocaine and prostitutes or escorts.
@terryomalley1974

As a native of Montreal, like Aldo let me assure you that he was most definitely NIT talking about Toronto!!! 😅 Montreal always kicked Toronto's ass when it came to nightlife, still does. In case you thought Montreal is a small town, it's metro area population is 4.5 million. In fact, until 1981, Montreal had always been Canada's biggest city. Sorry, I just couldn't let that slip by.

Good ear. Both Canadian bands from the same era. You could include Brian Adams in there too. Much like NZ and Australia, Canada has its own unique set of qualities that help define the music from there. A lot of people spot forms of that 'Canadian-ness' in the strange and unexpected lyrical choices made by other Canadians like Neil Young, Joni Mitchell or Alanis Morrissette.
@hmpz36911

@@s.mcpherson6354 I haven't picked up on any Canadianisms really, but I do like some music from there. Triumph, Rush and April Wine are the Canadian trio of melodic hard rock for me.

@@hmpz36911 Those are all great bands. You may also like Chilliwack, or Aldo Nova. And you're right, the differences are pretty subtle. But just 'subtly distinct from the US is a decent start. It's often in the lyrical style, or the producing (which is likely what you're subconsciously spotting). The Tragically Hip is another group that, like Alanis Morrissette and Joni Mitchell, often has has a strange cadence to their lyrics. When it comes to discerning the differences relatively reliably, one has to hear a lot of each place, but I've lived in a lot of other countries and got to know their 'sounds.' And for sure, Triumph--one of my favourites to see live--was also in there. Triumph and Rush were both super skilled trios with great writing in their respective genres and they both preferred to focus on hopeful, philosophical, or in the case of Triumph, very positive messaging, in their songs. That can be refreshing in rock and roll.
@hmpz36911
Жыл бұрын
@@s.mcpherson6354 I've heard of all of those and maybe a song or two. Maybe the connection is that Canadian rock is more positive, whereas America and the UK are a little meaner - reflective of national culture. Canadians have a reputation for being very nice while the rest of us are known for being a bit rude. I like some of the Canadian heavy metal bands of the 80s too.
