But these days, with prices like that, I've dropped the food brand snobbery and when I eat something not Heinz, I just think "If I was served this in a restaurant, would I like it?"... The answer is nearly always yes and at a 3rd of the price too.

I don't know how true it is but I've heard countless people saying this so it must have some validity to it. That store brand foods or the XL range (I think its called that) are all just proper brand names like birds-eye , Heinz , young etc but slightly flawed versions that weren't deemed good enough for the brands. Just like you can buy really cheap wonky fruit and vegetables because they don't look perfect but essentially taste exactly the same. Like I say I've never actually fact checked it or anything but many people swear its true and it seems plausible to me

Heinz have just revived the "Beans Means" tag (someone getting a delivery with "we had to change the beans brand rushing to a shop to get Heinz as BMH ) as it is noticeable that Heinz good are not selling for the reasons in this vlog-47p v £1.40,so they're obviously trying to revive the BMH myth. Noticed that other brands are advertising "It's the taste" etc to try and get customers back. If -as our bald taster says-there's minimum difference in taste (and I'd say he's right) that doesn't justify 93p difference in price.

I’m a pensioner, old state pension and no private one. By a sleight of hand by our wonderful government my pension has been reduced by nearly £100 per week this year (paying pensions is too expensive says the billionaire Prime Minister, ignoring my 55 years of contributions) so cost cutting is now a real necessity for me. Aldi only opened in my town about 4 months ago and I’m finding that many Aldi products are just as good as the national brands, with really significant savings to be made. Way back when 1992 i use to work for gateways stores ending up as the grocery manager doing the warehouse orders dealing directly with company reps. I onced asked the rep from heniz why there baked beans where x3 the price of the own label beans, he said that heniz used larger and better quality harricot beans from the USA and better quality tomato from spain for the sauce and they where cooked in the can longer to give an better "texture" etc. I did check and the beans where larger than the gateway/tesco/sainsbury own label then and the tomato sauce did have what i considered a better flavour from there spice blend. I alway thought that heniz used maggi season or similar in there tomato sauces. A drop of worcestershire sauce or maggi added to own label beans was a quick easy and cheap way to improve the own label sauces. Oh and the standard can content weight was 220g/440g back then which was universal legal standard at that time. To be honest now i see no differance really between own label brand and heniz harricott bean size todau and the sauces are the same as always. Mind you the cans have 10-11% less contents, while the cans stayed the same european standard size.

Sainsburys do a price match with Aldi on many staples, and their own-brand baked beans is one of them (perfectly good, no need to pay x3 the price for Heinz). They also have a budget range "Hubbards" baked beans which I've yet to try, though I did give Hubbards spaghetti hoops a go for the sake of variety and they were a lot sweeter than I remember spaghetti hoops being at school (mind you, this was over 30 years ago). Perhaps something for a future taste comparison video?

If you add a knob of butter to your beans when heating them they taste sublime, whichever ones you eat.

I just eat supermarket beans now, it took a few times to adjust my taste buds, but I am glad i persevered. If you go to a cafe and have a breakfast with beans, you eat them or knowing which brand they are. I used to buy Branston beans but they have shot up in price too.

I switched over to Supermarket "Saver" budget beans years ago, after a lady in a Sheffield chippy gave me the tip of putting in a decent knob of butter when cooking on the hob - that creams up the sauce and makes it more "claggy" as you say - I've done them that way ever since. And if you struggle with eating salad leaves as I do, chill some beans and have a spoonful on the plate with a dash of salad cream - really helps makes things like lettuce bearable... :)

I've always liked Heinz beans with pork sausages ..great unique flavour which the beans also take on ... last week l tried a tin of Asda's smart price baked beans and pork sausages ( 8 in the tin) it was a fraction of the price..around 50p off memory and was exactly the same.

In Australia, Heinz effectively doubled the price of beans by eliminating the 420g can and introducing stupid sizes over and under. I think 300g and 555g. I immediately went to other brands.

I always kept an empty can of Heinz beans hidden from my wife. She would refuse to eat baked beans unless they were Heinz. For many years she believed it was always Heinz simply because she saw the tin. She could not tell they were normally Aldi's or Tesco's own. I'm divorced now but I don't think this was the reason😂.

Just like the other commentators have stated, when you've grown up with only Heinz beans over a long period of time, your taste buds are locked into their flavour. This is the challenge that own brands face is matching that distinct taste. If the stores' own brand come out of the Heinz factory they're going to ensure their flavour remains the stronger and richer! If they're that close in flavour, I'll give them a whirl. Thanks.

Beans on toast is one of my favourite comfort foods but I live in Central Asia and they are hard to come by. In the end I learned to make my own and I definitely recommend making a big batch and then freezing portions in bags. As cheap as tinned beans, taste better and less additives. Give it a chance :)

Heinz are ignoring their market's money problems (us!). For me most beans are similar and worth trying. I live alone and find that Marks and Spencers small home tin of beans is cheaper than Morrisons and other own brands! (39p for tiny tin, Heinz £1) Really liked you review. My only tiny criticism is how you read the label randomly, rather than working your way down the label. I always read my labels to check ingredients so that's my routine way. 😉

So after watching your video I went to Lidl. I bought 1 tin of Hienz beans £1.30, 1 tin of Lidl brand which is Newgate £0.49. They also had a Simple brand. £0.27. I bought 1 of each. Not tried the Newgate yet but the £0.27 Simple beans were very nice & pretty much indistinguishable from the Heinz. All the best from an ex heinz'y.
