Well, this is awkward. I've been a loyal Sandisk customer since 2013 with zero problems. I purchased 2 of the SanDisk Extreme Pro 4TB portable SSDs and 2 of 2TB units. All 4 are in operation and running for close to a year. I'm not trying to defend Sandisk and Im an employee. Everybody I know uses this brand with no issues.

I appreciate you adding this comment. I assure you, this has nothing to do with wanting to through shade on the brand; quite the contrary. I've been loyal to the brand for a very long time. However, I think the volume of comments on not only my video, but several others, indicating a consistent issue with not just SD drive but the WD equivalents speaks for itself. In addition, the fairly silent response from the manufacture is rather disheartening. I would speak for many in saying if the brand got ahead of this issue and addressed the creator community, which is obviously who these high-speed drives are targeted to, with honesty and humility, they would receive far more in terms of brand equity and loyalty. Unfortunately, at this point, hundreds if not thousands have experiences catastrophic data loss costing them THOUSANDS and the only thing we have received is a haphazard firmware fix for iOS that needs a PC operating system to enact. It just seems like we're trying to turn our back on one of the most lucrative market segments you have. Doesn't really make sense. Articles have been written in major tech publications like the Verge about this issue. It's a terrible look.

I almost lost a whopping 3 TB of data! I had this trusty 500 GB drive that never let me down, so I figured splurging on a 4 TB one was a solid move. But guess what? I lost my files not once, but twice! First time, I blamed it on bad configuration, but even after double-checking everything, I still lost everything a week later. Thank goodness I had a backup on another drive. I mean, seriously, how do they even sell these things?

One week after purchasing the 4 TB Extreme Pro it did the exact same thing as you described in your video. I am a musician and had put many hours of original work of this drive and would have lost it all except I saw your video. I sent it off to the data recovery service that you mentioned. Many drinks and $2,800 later I had my work back. Will never trust this company with anything ever again

Damn, this just happened to me with a SanDisk 2TB Extreme Pro - I'm thanking my lucky stars that it only happened 4 days after I bought it and that I still have full backups of everything on an older drive. It's absolutely insane this drive is still on the market given how widespread the issues appear to be. Like you, I ran through a bunch of troubleshooting steps before asking myself "how many other people have had this issue" and finding this video, along with thread upon thread of people with these SanDisk drives failing.

Identical to me but I didn't have a backup. Ugh! My 2TB Extreme Pro within a the first 2 weeks of having it. Data recovery got back 80% of my files.

@@RON_ZHOU Yes, it does, and the issue has been reported here on KZitem last year already! I bought 2x 2TB devices 2 years ago, 1 failed last year, and the other one today. I contacted Western Digital support via online chat and they offer a firmware update for the 4TB version on Windows only. Not sure if this would help for the 4TB model, obviously you would need to install the firmware update before something happens. They offer to replace the device, even if you send it to a data recovery company and they need to open the device. Just need to send them the report.

I have been using multiple Sandisk Extreme SSDs for the last couple of years, never had an issue with them. HOWEVER, I recently purchased the PRO version (4TB), after just a few days of using it problems started to arise. As I was editing some photos on that drive through my iMac, the drive just ejected itself, then when I connected again my Mac said the drive was not readable. Then I tried using different cables but the drive just didn't show up on my iMac even on Disk utility. After one hour, it started to show up and work again, now I am backing up everything and will never trust that Extreme PRO SSD again. I guess there is an issue with the PRO versions..?

Hey, I actually went to a SanDisk event and one of their reps or technicians explain to me that these extreme pro drives aren't necessarily pro drives. They've created a newer higher end version of what they define as a pro drive and he recommended that is the one that I go to. Because in a pro videographer environment these are bound to fail quickly.

Like, put that in another industry. "In a pro driving environment, our cars are bound to fail quickly." So reassuring. Just make sure you have multiple backups and that at least one of them has nothing to do with Western Digital and SanDisk.

If I may make a suggestion... Sabrent and other manufacturers sell NVME SSD enclosures... I ordered one off of amazon not too long ago. It's made out of solid high quality aluminum and does a fantastic job cooling/running/protecting the drive. You can then purchase pretty much any size/shape/brand of NVME SSD that you like and place it inside. I am currently using a 1TB Samsung EVO Pro and it has fantastic speed and reliability on my 16" M1 Pro MacBook. If you need bigger of course you can purchase up to 8TB NVME drives right now. The great part is that you can swap them out and use any old or left over NVME drives you have laying around. Every time I have an old NVME drive laying around I slap it into one of these enclosures for a super fast and reliable external storage drive. In fact, this is THE fastest storage device you can use on Apple computers right now. Apple does not support the advertised speeds of the Sandisk SSD that you have. yes mine crashed a week after adding over 16000 music videos and lost everything but thankfully I did have a back up in a 5TB Lacie hd, now just before my next gig last saturday night at the club the Sandisk Extreme Pro 4TB failed to open again and lost again my entire music video files and this after using it all day without any issues, had to use my Lacie and yes I reported it to Amazon and they're replacing it, but after seeing your video I am now afraid of this Sandisk. Thinking of buying a Crucial SSD drive now.

I had the same issue on a SanDisk - Extreme Portable 1TB External USB-C NVMe last year. I bought it in Oct. 2021 and it failed after about two months. I bought it to move my photos onto. I am a decent amateur photographer, and I was just trying to move my photos onto one drive. Luckily I still have the external drives (WD) that I copied them from. Best Buy told me it would be a level 2 repair (level 3 being destroyed by a hammer) which they don't do and to call "Data Doctors", which I don't plan to do. Has anyone tried sending it back to Sandisk for manufacturer warranty?

I have an issue where videos from my Sandisk Portable 1TB drive freeze for 5-7 seconds at random intervals. I've tried switching ports, cables, and even formatting the drive, but the issue persists. This never happened with my previous HDD, and my PC has Thunderbolt and 3.2 ports.

I am another SanDisk 4TB Extreme pro victim using a M2 Macbook 13'. Got blessed with the "DiscManagement.disenter-Error 49218" and the drive was unable to mount. Haven't done anything special to the disc except for temporarily MOVING 1,4TB of (partly unbackuped) data on it (didn't feel right while I was doing it but I kept going since I didn't have a backup Drive at hand). Next time I plugged it in - it wouldn't mount. Seems like most of the files where recoverable using Disk Drill (7 Day Free Trial Version using Setapp) but I've completely lost faith in the drive. Will be returning mine... Good luck ya'll

I just tried to open my 4TB Sandisk Extreme Pro that I had put my highest rated culled shots from ten years and three hard drives on. I had bought a "new" 2020 iMac and was to transfer the shots over. NOTHING... I tried four different usb c cables, and two different cables...NOTHING!

I have a similar Issue to yours whilst using Sandisk Micro SD Card Extreme with a Go Pro - had lots of footage, could see this on Go Pro Thumbnails, See space allocated on File Browser - but computer couldn't read / copy them? Couple of times and now think this could be a Sandisk common problem? Anyone else had similar issue?

Exactly the same problem, with my 4TO extreme pro 2000 mb/s. These type of hard drives were the ones I trusted more after multiple problems with other types of HD. I don't really know what to turn to now.

My 2TB are working ok at this point. I can't seem to eject them; once I eject them, not all but some of my files do disappear, which is annoying as F*%#. So even though they are portable, I am not using them as a portable device. My 4TB is new, and that one does not want to be readable or show up anywhere. So Now I work with anxiety, praying to the all-powerful tech gods to not delete the shit I am working with. So this video calms my nerves and assures me that I am not the F$%*-up and I am not the only one experiencing something similar to what I am going through. Thank you, SanDisk for making my life a living Hell, I will see you there. \m/

YES. An older one is doing fine. More recently (2 days ago) a newer 4TB SSD blew out, "went dark". I agree. This is total BULLSHIT. SanDisk needs to step up and loudly address this f0ing problem. THANK YOU for posting this video. (I've got a MacBook Pro M1)

I just want to break down in tears and cry. a New 4Tb disk gave up on me and I am aghast - and this is in 4 days. No way - never again I am going back to SanDisk. Mike, you wouldn't believe it but it happened TODAY with a Western Digital 4TB my buddy had on a shoot. I knew Western Digital, SanDisk and G-Drive were all connected but didn't think it would be happening across different subsidiaries in the same parent corporation! This is more widespread than we originally thought! So terrible. So many people are losing their faith in these products. It HAS to be the core demographic of their business with these high-speed drives. Shame they don't want to do anything about it.

Mine failed once. I stupidly kept using it. I didn’t lose anything but if I wasn’t so thorough I wouldn’t have realized I was actually missing files. The drive didn’t corrupt a second time but had an issue with it mounting. When it did I noticed random files were missing. Shout out to Lightroom calling out missing photos. I had them on my triple/geo/cloud back up solution but man if I missed that it would’ve sucked. I’d say most people, especially those using it for something that Lightroom can’t notify you of missing photos would have lost data.

That's right, I have a 4tb Sandisk, I bought it last year, all client data disappeared in an instant I had to look for a data saver, spent a lot of money, a lot of time and a lot of energy even though in the end 80% of the data was saved what if this data is really lost, we will compensate the client for a very large amount of money, Sandisk is not responsible for that, This is very dangerous issues, lucky for people who get the rest of the products that don't fail from Sandisk

Just Happened to Me Today... Got The Extreme Pro 2TB Las week Was using it As My Editorial Scatch Disk, Thankfully I has Finisehd all my videos and rendered them in 4k, today I was going to start a new library on Final Cut Pro X for a new project client, i created it and then loaded the footage and it happened the computer my iMac M1 2021 just was frozen, restarted it and Voila My SSD was an empty vesel called Untitled.... has never happened to me with my regular scandisk ssd or my 4 Samsungs (t5 & t7) this is crazy....

I have now gone through, 3... 2TB Sandisk Extreme Pro's and all 3 have failed in the last week. One of them, I tried re-formatting over 5 times! I reached out to SanDisk about this issue, which by the way SanDisk is also owned by Western Digital.... and all they said for me to do was to return it and get a new one. I am going to need to find a new SSD soon, it's the only way I can edit 4k Pro Res footage on my computer. Maybe Samsung? idk

YES! One in production and now my backup. Luckily I have another backup in a remote location and I seriously hope that one mounts so I can back it up. And we used to joke about Western Digital. Seriously - these aren't cheap drives! I thought I was investing in a good pro equipment; now my 8 day shoot hangs on a shoestring thanks to these guys. I backed up in TRIPLICATE! Three drives I bought form these guys and two out of three FAILED.

I've had the same issue with two of the 4TB drives. I thought it was me until I did some research. Way back in the 2010's with old school HDDs I had failures with Western Digital drives and switched to Seagate. Lo and behold, I now learn that Sandisk is no owned by Western Digital!

I'm having a similar issue. Bought a Sandisk Portable SSD 2TB (not Extreme Pro) 10 days ago to use on a Macbook Pro M2 Sonoma 14.5. Initially, the drive would keep disconnecting all the time, the Mac sending that irritating "Disk not Properly Ejected" message. Yesterday the drive died completely. I was planning to reformat it from ExFat to AFPS, but it was too late. Contacted Sandisk; they've been helpful and said will send me a replacement. On Apple forums I found people saying it is an issue with Sonoma. Otherwise Sandisk customers are also complaining. Hard to know what's going on. I hope they'll really send me the replacement. Let's see how it goes.

Here I am about a year later and Amazon and vendors are STILL selling these defective drives!! I bought the 2 TB version of the Max and it has password problems - not recognizing the password and not opening the drive but on my desktop the drive doesn't lock with the password - lucky for me since I can recover the data from there at least. How do they STILL sell these drives? There are class actions against WD for these products.

Had this happen to me with the 2TB guy 3 hours before a gig (im a vj). I was able to reformat it and reload all my content to the drive before the set and it worked okay, but then 2 days later it was bricked again!!!! I got mine through amazon and was able to force customer service to take a return on it and I reordered a samsung t7. But yeah. total bullshit that Sandisc is selling these knowing there are bugs and issues with them that could totally screw somebody.

I just got it delivered today from Amazon, and all I wanted to do is back up all my scanned docs, which are images. Unfortunately, this is the problem it downloads about 1000 docs and then stops at which time the phone asks me to restart it because "I removed the drive" improperly...... What??? Anyway around this other than reorder a different drive???

It's happening in Australia too. 4TB Extreme Pro. I can format it to EXFAT, or AFPS or whatever, and it works for a few hours. Then it will just start self destructing and the files disappear and has mounting issues. I managed to return mine to Sandisk/Western Digital in Aust. After many weeks stuffing around they finally approved a replacement but that would take 3-4 weeks. It's now been 5 weeks and still no sign and they closed the support incident. So I've started a new one today. I originally bought it on 2nd Feb!

Finally received my replacement. 24 hours in, I have written about 500 gig to it and so far no problems. News reports have finally surfaced regarding This issue in the past ten days as Sandisk have acknowledged the problem. Apparently it's a firmware issue and they are issuing a firmware fix.

I’ve always used iCloud Drive to keep all my files on the cloud but recently found out the way iCloud Drive works is it’s still required to keep some of each file data on the hard drive. I have 8TB of iCloud but my MacBook is topping out at 4TB, and is too full. Apple said in order for me to free up storage, I need to straight delete files. Doesn’t make sense if I have over 4TB additional iCloud storage available. They made me buy an external 4TB drive. I just want all my data available on all my machines even not at home.

Hi, ive just purchase one. After reading a bit, could it be related more to iOS than PC/Android use? Not that that makes it cool because SanDisk should deal with each customer like they appreciate their continued custom, and rely on recommendations frkm said customers also

@Simon - There is no real pattern to this. I have seen them on multiple OS and different firmwares. It's a drive issue more than anything.

This happened to me with my 2 TB Extreme Pro. I have an older 1 TB Extreme Pro and have had zero issues, but I have now used 2 of the 2 TB with the same damn issue!! Transferring files and then losing them totally! It’s almost like the drive just decides to reset itself. SO DAMN FRUSTRATING!! However, I am happy to know that I am not the only one going through it. Looks like I will try the Samsung T7.

I bought 4 TB and 2 TB versions to back up photos while I travel. Both drives failed. Sandisk is sending me replacements. I have no confidence in them to securely store data and they’re too small to use as paper weights.

Thank you so much for this video. Bro you have no idea... I switched my Macbook air m1 for a macbook pro m2 thinking the air was a dud and fried my drives, but happened to three different drives on the new macbook pro. It was driving me crazy. "Surely SSDs are so reliable" I just could not figure out the problem. Thank you so much for letting me know, it's really all these sandisk ssds. Finally know the cause. Thank you so much

Just starts using a New 4tb Scandisk. Came home Saturday Night backup on ScanDisk all the photos. When to bed, got up in the morning to starts editing nothing was on the drive that I saw the night before. Panic! Luckily I didn't format the SD Cards, that what save me! Returned the other Scandisk 4tb this werk. I Am Done!!!!☹️🥹🥺😡

I have a 1tb and it failed on the first use. I plugged it again and it worked and the data was not lost. Planning to return it within the 30 day window if it fails again

Worst SSD ever purchased. Died on me in less than a year. Definitely do not recommend this drive to anyone who is serious about data backup. It's insane SanDisk isn't addressing this properly and that it somehow has soo many positive reviews on Amazon.

Just read severe error warnings on a one year old read only sample library 4TB Sandisk Extreme. I'm going with the latest conclusion, Western Digital is now the worst in terms of QA. I sent in a warranty request, we'll see how that goes. In terms of externals, USB4 enclosures are here, I'm getting 2500MB/s reads off of a Crucial NVME in a USB4/TB4 compatible enclosure. Would probably be much better with a faster NVME.

Holy Shit this is crazy! lol. Listen, they really the manufacturers need to wake up, they are losing millions of dollars in revenue per time. Samsung also has some issues with the NVMe drives.

After I bought a metal Sandisk thumb drive that got so hot it would burn you I swore never again. I have the T7 and T7 shield and the shield is a step up. I also buy NVME enclosures and make my own drives that are by far the fastest I own.

This happened to me today. Had (6) of the 2TBs and 3 out of the 2 turned onto ghost drives. SUPER scary. Has there been a diagnosis or solution to this yet?

No WD/SD for me, ever again. Their thumb drives failed on me years ago. Controllers are garbage.

It happened to me today. in the morning when i was on my mac, i tried to open some files, and some images was just a kind of green, and with some risks on it. kinda corrupted. i thought it was some temporary problem, so i restarted my mac, and the Sandisk SSD was not working anymore. couldn’t do anything, and lost my last project i was working on premiere. it sucks, because i can never trust this ssd anymore :/
