After several months of research, I bought this Kona EV. It is a little more efficient than the Tesla 3. I am all for efficiency. The price is on par with with a Tesla 3. But the insurance is way less on this car comparing to a Tesla 3 (without auto-pilot). I like the outside of looks of a Tesla 3, but I just can't deal with the plain looking of the interior. The main instrument cluster is in the center similar to Prius is really turning me off. This Kona EV looks beautiful outside and inside (when new) despite all the cheap plastic. It is such a pleasant to drive. I have more manual control over the Kona EV comparing to Tesla 3 and that's how I like it. I work on my family ICE cars all my life, since I was 15, long before I had my driver license. The only time I have to take any of my cars to the shop are for smog checks, wheel alignment, and new tires. I have rebuilt 4 engines and changed a clutch myself. I am getting too old to repair my own ICE cars. With this Kona EV, the only major things I have to deal with are changing the reduction differential gear oil and the coolant once every 50,000 miles; brake pads and fluid changing are no big deal for me. I can't believe I bought a Hyundai after laughing at the Excel when it came out in 1985 and telling everyone to stay away from Hyundai for so many years. Hyundai has been copying European cars very well.

Great review overall of a great EV! I have basically the same model except with the Pebble Blue interior which works for me. A couple quick notes: The hatch release button on the remote doesn't actually do anything. The button to the left of the driver that you said changed charging modes is actually to select whether the car will always lock the charging connector when it's in place or only when the car is charging (allowing someone to unplug it & use it on their car if you're away from your vehicle when it's done charging). You don't have to manually turn on heat - the button is there, but leaving the HVAC in AUTO mode will fully manage the cooling/heating based on your set temp. Lastly, it comes with a level 1 (120v) charger not a level 2 charger. I really enjoyed your relaxed speaking style and focus on what was most important about the Kona. Keep up the good work!

O. K. I own an automotive supply company, and I have weighed most electric cars for a bit of time. My neighbor has a one month old Jaguar I Pace, and it's been en the shop 3 times for the computer. Not surprised. The Tesla dash is confusing as hell, and I went to school for electronics. If the screen goes out, you are screwed. My consensus is for the money and the quality of Korean cars, the Hyundai and Kia are the only cars I am looking at right now to buy. Next year, I hope to buy a Rivian because it looks perfect for the Sedona, Arizona environment. Great review man. Steve

I agree the styling is better than the standard Kona. I am not a fan of the waterfall grill Hyundai currently uses so this solves it and adds some nice coolness to it. My gripes with it are the lack of AWD (at least, looking at the top trim), cheap interior plastics, limited rear seat amenities and overall high price. It is about 20000$ CAD more expensive than a loaded Kona in Canada, and to me all the above features should be standard at 50K+ on the Ultimate trim. I am seeing this car more often now in Ottawa so I am encouraged that there is a market for it and that future models will only get better.

@@bmw803 Hybrid batteries are pretty easy to repair, just go on youtube to see Prius battery restorations to get an idea. A co-worker of mine took a $500 HV battery training course, and used it to repair the hybrid battery on a Chrysler Aspen Hemi Hybrid, of all things. Bought the car for a few thousand, and the replacement battery cell cost him $50, crazy good deal. Dealerships mark up battery repairs to a crazy degree because the average consumer thinks a battery is some arcane magic box from the future. Anybody with electrical safety training and an ebay account can fix a defective Hybrid or EV battery.

This was a pretty good review. I am not fully sold on an all electric car as my only car. But I can see myself driving one for short trips. So, I am going wait a few years. But this is impressive though

Buddy check out the youtube channel tesloop. They have several high mileage Tesla's and document the issues they have had. The newer the tesla the longer they have lasted them mileage wise. Their 2016 model X lasted 350k miles on original battery and motors front and rear, still no problem for example. The model 3 motor's are designed for a million mile life and the battery pack is supposed to be improved from what is in the X. They had a 2014 model S that had a major battery pack failure (nothing dangerous but it had to be replaced under warranty) at somewhere between 100k-150k miles. I recommend you check out the videos. And my other point is im sure that Tesla isn't the only company who can build reliable batteries. The only company I'd stay away from is Nissan because the refuse to properly liquid cool their batteries but pretty much everyone else does including hyundai.

@@gwarlow what if someone rear ended you into something that's in front of you. I don't think the placement of the charging port was well thought of. We live in California and we see such incidents where 4-5 cars are involved in a collision everyday. You can be careful but there's no guarantee that every driver on the road is as responsible as you.

Drug dealers also start rolling on those EVs with the “masked” grills, extremely gangsta looking.

No doubt, what a great vehicle for a drive-by shooting. Super quiet, then get away real fast.

I like this car, but I don't like the front end very much. Interesting you felt the opposite.

Are all your reviews like this? As it's very good and through with going over everything without messing around. Many "reviews" are pretty much this car died 200 miles and have a drive bit then over.

Yes, I try to keep my style consistent. I actually have a more thorough range test of this vehicle coming Tuesday!
