SHOGUN ASSASSIN did not explicitly explain the secrets behind Ogami Itto's phenomenal swordsmanship. Yes, Itto was tall and powerful, lending strength to his sword cuts. But a lot of his success was due to the type of sword he was carrying. The 2002-5 television show, "Lone Wolf And Cub" explains it. Ogami Itto did not carry a normal katana. He carried an exceptional sword, known as a, "dotanuki", which translates to, heavy sword, sometimes referred to as, heavy plough sword. A dotanuki was a battlefield sword intended to cut through armor. It was slightly wider and slightly thicker. As such, only strong men could wield it effectively, which is why the typical Edo era samurai preferred the common, lighter katana. The civil wars were long over and no one needed a heavy, hard to hold battlefield sword. Ogami Itto, being tall for a Japanese and very powerful, could easily wield a dotanuki as fast as a katana. Plus his swordsmanship was superior. He sliced and diced his foes around him with telling effect. No one stood a chance. Of course there was a lot of Hollywood play-acting going on, such as the enemy samurai behind him holding back instead of everyone rushing Itto at once.

Shogun Assassin doesn't tell much about Ogami's background other than the narrator's reference during the opening credits "..My father was famous, he was the Greatest samurai in the empire". Otherwise, Shogun Assassin was its own movie compared to the first films in the Lone Wolf and Cub series. Although the main plot followed the original series, there were some clear differences in Shogun Assassin, e.g. Shadow Yagyū Clan leaders Yagyū Retsudō's position in the film, main plot background and confusion with the Shogun. The biggest main plot behind the movie series was different compared to Shogun Assassin. The original plot was related to Itto Ogami's position of power, a position of high power in the Tokugawa shogunate during the 1700s. The purpose of the Shadow Yagyū Clan (Ura-Yagyū) was to reach a higher position of power, which involved the Spy system, the official Assassins and the Shogunate Decapitator. In order to achieve this position of power, Ogami was an obstacle to the Shadow Yagyū clan and therefore Ogami and his family were targeted by assassination attempts by the Shadow Yagyū Clan. Ogami with his son eventually got into a difficult situation and he started "a new life as an assassin". The entire film series follows this situation, where Shadow Yagyū Clan leaders Yagyū Retsudō obsessively tries to kill Ogami. In the original first part of the film series ("Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance" 1972) the starting events of the entire film series are presented in more detail, in practice a large part of the background story from the first Lone Wolf film has been shortened to be shown during the opening credits of Shogun Assassin. The original movie series also does not tell how Ogami becomes so skilled and what is the secret behind his skills. 1993's "Kozure Okami - Sono chisaki te ni" also doesn't add more information to Ogami's background, in fact this movie was a remake of "Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance".

Up to that point, period dramas had been all about bloodless cuts. This was the only film that aimed for realism in samurai fighting. This must have been as close to a real battle as possible.

This is all wrong. Yagyū Retsudō (柳生 烈堂)-The leader of the Shadow Yagyū clan. Framed Ogami Itto. Not The Shogun.
