Mason Quinn is, in fact, correct in that there was a tea ceremony in the Karate Kid Part 2 XD Tea ceremony is a really old and VERY precise tradition in Japan. I worked at a jr high school that had a tea club where they studied and learned how to perform tea ceremony in several different forms (depending on what school of tea and time of day, etc). It is actually considered an art form by many as well!

They DID do a Tea Ceremony in the Karate Kid II. It is a huge deal in Japanese culture to participate in the Tea Ceremony. It is considered a high honor to be invited to participate, and a major source of cultural status to be able to prepare the tea and conduct the ceremony. In the book, Butaro is acknowledged to not just be one of those who knows how to run the Cha No Yu (Tea Ceremony), but he is acclaimed as a Zen Master of the Tea Ceremony. The tea house itself where the ceremony is conducted has several ritualized and ceremonial elements to it. And the Tea Master is responsible for scrubbing the place clean and controlling every single detail to create a whole symbolic journey which puts the participants into the right frame of mind so that they have the sublime experience the Master is trying to impart. It is incredibly nuanced, and subtle. The scroll hung in the niche, the blossom near the scroll, the poem on the scroll, any drawings or paintings displayed, the particular kind of tea kettle, the tea bowls and how they are made imperfectly on purpose, it all means something. In the book it is made abundantly clear that Buntaro performed the Tea Ceremony for Mariko with absolute perfection, and both of them understood as Japanese well versed in the culture of the Ceremony, that Buntaro had basically delivered the performance of a lifetime. This is why Mariko gives him correct praise in a culture where the understated is the norm. It was the equivalent of a 10 minute standing ovation after a classical musician finished a once-in-a-lifetime solo. But even the moment of Zen that Buntaro supplied was not enough to melt Mariko's heart or sway her purpose in life. But yes, good for you for noticing that this Tea Ceremony was the precursor for the one that Daniel and Kumiko shared in the old fishery shack out on the wharf in Okinawa in Karate Kid II.

contrary to popular belief, hiromatsu committing seppuku was not part of toronaga’s plan at all. according to a podcast with some people involved with the show, hiromatsu did what he did because he realized that the other three generals in the scene were going to commit seppuku as protest to toronagas decision. realizing that if he committed instead, the other three would not have to since he would already do it so toronaga would only have to lose him instead of three valuable generals. he showed true loyalty till the end thinking that ending his life would benefit the whole situation. this show is truly one of a kind.

The names have been changed and a few characters/events have been compressed or shifted for maximum drama, but this is the story of the first Englishman to set foot in Japan and what he got caught up in (i.e. the history of Japan in 1600 and after ;) ) Also you three laughed at Mason Quinn but he was 100% right about the tea ceremony and Karate Kid (II)! From JNTO: "The tea ceremony sees the simple task of preparing a drink for a guest elevated to an art form, an intricate series of movements performed in strict order-and appreciated by the recipient." Buntaro was trying, in his way, to apologize to Mariko and show devotion.

In Karate Kid 2 in which Daniel was in Okinawa (not Osaka) (*-opposite coasts-*) with Mr. Miyagi he and Kumi (?) performed the **Tea Ceremony** (later referenced in Kobra Kai) It is the same ceremony performed here showing that the ceremony has been a part of Japanese Tradition for centuries and is a very Highly regarded Ceremony. It is generally performed by one side declaring their love or feelings for the other. I would extrapolate that Miko's husband whose name I forget at the moment was trying to say he still luuuves his wife, they are Japanese after all and one can't just come out and say it.

The book is 1200 pages long. Really! So of course they left out a lot. And some things play out differently. In this episode for example it was not Hiromatsu who commited Seppuku but the generals out of protest. This version is a lot more effective! I was not pleased with every change but I understand most of them. A TV adaptation almost never can show the whole story of a book. And sometimes other things cause that. Take the scene in epiosde 3 where John teaches Toranaga to dive. In the book ALL of Toranaga's people on the boat have to dive. Even the women. And all in the nude like it is the japanese way! So you can imagine John has to dive again quickly when he sees Mariko the first time naked. Also the scene when John visits Kiku in the Tea House is understandably cut. In the novel it is an explicit lesson in sex techniques with Dildos and all. Well it was written in the horny seventies after all. LOL

2:26 Was Patrick Swayze raised in Japan with Japanese beliefs? Did the British who went to India accept Indian culture and live like Indians? Hell no! The British did to Indians what every other Western Power did during European colonization: they forced peoples in foreign lands to become them and enslaved them; they forced their culture, language, and religion on people who had already had their own way of life. Mariko was raised in Japan. It is all she knows. Yes, she's been taught about the Western world, but she is still Japanese, and she proves that in every episode. Filial piety was huge in South East Asia then, and still is now. Why do you keep thinking Mariko is suddenly going to do something out of character for a Japanese person? James Clavell is one of my favorite authors. He's Australian, and he was an artillery officer in the British military in WWII. He was captured by the Japanese in the fall of Singapore, and spent most of the war as a POW. Most of his stories are historical fictions based on real stories about about Westerners (particularly British) who shaped Asia. His storytelling is remarkable, with plot twists and intrigue and conspiracies. I've read all his books, and my personal favorite is King Rat, a story of American and British POW's. Unfortunately, there are not enough good adaptations of his Asian novels. This is a very good adaptation, though. He did work in screenwriting, though. There are three iconic movies that he wrote - The Fly, The Great Escape, and To Sir, With Love. The Great Escape is outstanding. It's based on real events and was the inspiration for the TV show Hogan's Heroes. It's about a Nazi POW camp, and had an ensemble cast of most the biggest stars of the day. You should react to it some day.
@P.HATHCOX
Ай бұрын
King Rat is one of his shortest but one of his best books in my opinion, probably because of his own experiences. His entire Asian saga is great. @@P.HATHCOX I hadn't considered that. When I heard they were doing a season 2 & 3, I was in fact disheartened. The book is over after episode 10. That's an amazing story never really told right on screen.
@FaithIsDogma

@@douglassnyder214 Tai-pan would be epic, it deserves a mini-series the quality of Shogun (I love the book, but not a fan of the 1986 movie). KIng Rat is excellent too, but I think the existing 1965 movie is excellent and does not need a remake. I don't know what to think of more seasons of Shogun, it depends on the day you ask me lol. I like that Clavell's daughter is an executive producer and controls his estate and all his works. Justin Marks/Rachel Kondo and Hiroyuki Sanada have the skill and knowledge and foundation to do another season or 2, so I hope they can come up with a new original story.

Unpopular opinion. Buntaro is not a bad guy. I think he genuinely loves his wife. Hes a brave and courageous soldier who would die for his lord, which he demonstrated earlier in the show. He is angry with his wife alot because shes constantly trying to leave him by means of offing herself. This stranger comes to their lands and Mariko is clearly interested. Buntaro isn't a fool and he sees the way John and Mariko look at one another. Hes frustrated. I know he slapped her. Theres no excuse for that but not uncommon in those times.

I'm sorry -- *what*?? "Buntaro is not a bad guy.... I know he slapped her." First of all, any man who lays hands on his wife is a bad guy *by definition*, so you know, take note of that. He's constantly shouting at her and about her. He insults her father and her family heritage. And oh yeah HE. BEAT. HER. IN. THE. FACE. If that's doesn't meet your criteria for being a "bad" guy, I don't even know what to say. Imagine a woman in a TV show saying of her abusive husband, "He screams at me, he beats me, but you know, he's not a bad guy. I think he genuinely loves me." I think what is important to keep in mind is that unlike typical movies and shows there are no "good guys" or "bad guys". Everyone is a shade of gray. Where as buntaro lashes out with physical and verbal violence, mariko fights with emotional violence. We don't get to see it much as the story is told more so from mariko's perspective and of more recent events but mariko has been treated buntaro pretty badly for some 16 years. From the time they were wed, she didn't want to marry him and looked down on his value. For a decade and a half she has been responding to buntaro with complete indifference. Treating someone who holds affection towards you with indifference is arguably one of the cruelest things you can do to person without physical touching them. Thats why you often hear things along the lines of "i rather be hated than nothing at all because at least i know they are thinking about me". Buntaro and mariko's relationship is toxic from both ends and is a "two wrongs doesn't make a right" situation.

It is widely said that it was over 250 years of peace and prosperity from 1603 to 1867 when the Shogunate was overthrown by the Emperor and an alliance of daimyos. However, there was a couple instances of fighting/violence that happened during those years. The Siege of Osaka in 1614/1615 and the Keian Uprising in 1651. Hiromatsu called Toranaga's bluff and lost... i dont know if he knew ahead of time... or if he realized it as it was going down... but the die was cast. Yabusghige has been an opportunist all along... so the only reason he would turn down Blackthorne's offer was because he didnt believe Toranaga was giving up. After Hiromatsu sold the defeat (to both Osaka and his own men), Yabushige was totally on board with Blackthorne. As for being wiped out if they went to war... the Toranaga clan is consigned to death anyways...which is why they were in denial of Toranaga giving up. With Toranaga's death, all ofnhis vassals ALSO have to commit seppuku. Including Hiromatsu, Yabushige, Mariko, Buntaro, Omi, and all of their soldiers. It was a done deal... whereas a win from Toranaga means at least some of them survive... But Toranaga (selling the lie) was more concerned about not embroiling ALL of Japan in a war. And in that he's not wrong. But Toranaga IS playing 3D chess. And he just sacrificed his Knight. So whats next? What does a chessmaster do next to secure the win? If you think THIS episode blew your mind.... just wait...

You fuckers talking about ice teas, while watching a beautiful depiction of a traditional Japanese tea ceremony kinda killed me. I mean, it's funny, but c'mon! 😅

Diamond Dave has it right! Hiromatsu regocnized it in the eyes of Toronaga at the last moments , before he commited Seppuku, what Toronaga was about. His loyalty was beyond reach. The line was : "So you DO believe in pointless death..." Btw. He gave his son an advice, with a double meaning, before his death. But to resolve it, would be a spoiler. Great Reaction, guys, as always. Enough has already been written about the significance of the tea ceremony in other comments ;)

Americans and their arrogance towards tea.. while it is just marketing thing, tea being popular in China and India (popular is a weak word here), both countries were more on Soviet Union side, maybe that's why. And bagged tea is not really a tea Anyway, the show just delivers. Every scene is a mini-show

You're 100% right about Hiromatsu not knowing the plan, but knowing when they locked eyes, that this has to happen in order for what ever Toronaga has planned to work. That's what makes it so amazing. Hiro basically played chicken with him, and didn't make him reveal his hand, but made him assure him that he had a hand to play. That was all he needed to go through with it. That is some of the greatest writing I've ever seen in a show. It's actually awe inspiring.

I think this mini-series is more Japanese. It seems they correctly changed the story to be more realistic to the way Japan was back then.
