It is used mainly as a training tool, to see where your round is going when shooting clays or skeet around dusk. Also the actual load will go A LOT further than the tracer, considering the tracer is a mix of chemicals in a very non-airodynamic (not sure if I spelled that right) plastic 'container'
@dotadojardiner8893

That seems like quite a big drop in trajectory over a short distance. Is that normal? Are these heavy slugs? or is the distance greater than it appears?

for the curious.these use the TCPO oxidation reaction seen in glowsticks, so no heat is generated. The chemicals are harmful but only if you are directly exposed to them in large amounts or over a looooong period of time. They are safe.

+Victrola Fix Not exactly, drag on projectiles does a lot. A slug or pellet drops off faster because of its shape (unlike a generic bullet shape). Pellets drop even faster because of its terminal velocity being worse off so drag affects it even more. That's why muskets were inaccurate and terrible at long range.
@joeybaggs7855
7 жыл бұрын
so your saying a bullet from a sniper rifle would drop off like this?
@EpicXXProductions
7 жыл бұрын
All bullets drop at the same rate. The velocity is what determines how much it will drop per unit of distance traveled. If one bullet is traveling twice as fast as another, then that bullet will drop half as much as the other bullet at the same distance. That's why .223 will barely drop at all out to about 350 meters and then suddenly start dropping like a rock at 500 meters, because that's when the bullet has lost most of it's velocity.

yeah, you know something that does glow naturally ? I actually took a chem course.. This proces is called chemiluminesence and it is caused by chemical reaction. when atoms are excited, energy levels of the electrons rise up and return to normal, when they return to normal they release that energy in form of photons (light). I don't know if they still contain cyanide but some years ago they sure did. Smartass

It does make me feel better. And it does actually work very similar to an actual glowstick (in regard to your other comment). These tracers actually have a small amount of birdshot behind the glowstick. When the shell is fired the pressure causes a rupture within the glowstick, allowing the two chemicals in the glowstick to react which results in the emission of light. This video shows what these glowsticks look like: watch?v=Oo3eEmbhgtw

The size of the pellet/shot in the round. It means the diameter of the pellets is approx. .090" It's used for skeet shooting, and other small birds. It's one of the smallest sized of shot you can get. It will have a wide pattern, but will not travel very far.

@Apolloisbest and above there they're used to mark certain points, by for instance shooting tracers at the place where an aircraft should strike or calling out for help. as in increased warning shot (face it glowing bullets are scarier), and in some cases to identify a squad(in close combat the squad who called in support would for instance fire a tracer burst so they know who is who). but if you're a civilian they mostly just look cool, an that's the point of these particular tracers.

Wonder if normal metal slugs do the same or what their trajectories would be? Because I think these are like polymer or something similar to a glow stick material, and may have much less momentum and worse aerodynamic profiles than standard slugs contributing to a large deceleration over a shorter distance. Still looks insanely fun.
