I use the area outside of the 50mm frame lines, plus a bit, for the 35mm lens on an M3. Works fine with Summicron and Summilux lenses. If you're printing, you'll be cropping anyway. Thanks for the video.

It definitely works and I do that too, but sometimes my ocd kicks in and I want to make sure I get it 200% right 😬

The goggle lenses attached without the accompanying lens will not focus correctly unless the lenses are recalibrated. Rangefinder cameras work by looking through viewfinder and lining up the image in the viewfinder with the image projected from the focusing window. Because the two windows are offset, objects will line up at different distances from the camera. This distance can be changed by a mirror in the focusing window, that almost changes the perspective of the focusing window. that mirror is moved by a little pin in the lens that moves as you focus the lens. The position of that pin (and the internals of the camera) are calibrated so that the viewfinder lines up objects at the distance the lens is focused to. When you put lenses in front of the viewfinder and focusing window, the angles at which things line up are different. for lenses made to be used with the goggles, the pin is calibrated to account for these different angles. You would also run into the same issue if you used a goggle lens without goggles on a camera with a wider viewfinder (Leica m2, m4, m5, m6...) the lens is still calibrated to take into account the change to where things line up in the viewfinder from the goggles, but the camera does not have goggles, so the focus is again going to be off. This isn't a huge problem though if you only have an m3, and you intend to use those lenses only with the m3. You could probably recalibrate them to work with the focusing for the goggles, but honestly, it's just easier to keep the goggles on the lenses made for them, or if you don't want a goggle lens, use an external viewfinder, or a camera with wider frame lines (although that is expensive) .

yes, thats what I've found out. I saw this video the other day and bought and adapted my own goggles only to find out that it does not focus correctly especially at close range. Sigh...

I'm sure with a little planning you can save for a Leica film body. They are not only very nice tools but also good investment. Glad you liked the video and stay tuned for more Leica related content

Haven’t used film in decades but they sure are pretty pieces of equipment. I always fight with myself to decide which favorite focal length to go out with 50 or 35?

I’m shooting a lot of film these days. If you look at my instagram feed, all of my recent photos are on film. My favorite focal length is still 35mm but I’m using 50mm too.

Loved your DIY solution, but there are a couple of things, first how stable are the goggles on the top of camera? Nobody wants something flimsy on top of a Leica! and how bright are those goggles? Do they affect clarity of viewfinder?

Thanks! it’s far from flimsy! and you can always ask the seller about how clean the goggles are, and of course you can always have them cleaned

Summaron 35mm 2.8 with goggles for around 800 to 1000 dollars is a great option.

Sure, if someone doesn't have a 35mm it's a good option. But I already had a good 35mm and I was lucky enough to find these goggles very cheap on ebay

No sane person would well you the Leica goggles alone. They are matched to the lenses that they are mounted on. The only exception is the goggles for the 50mm Summicron Dual Range which can be dismounted. And for that guy who is questioning how flimsy the goggles are, it is obvious that he has never put his hands on a Leica M3 and the 35mm goggles lenses. The quality of optics, construction and the fit are beyond outstanding. There is a reason why all of a sudden every Tom, Dick and Harry with a few quid in their pockets want an analogue Leica.

I actually found these goggles on ebay! Maybe I was just lucky, but I think it is very possible to find them. People adapt these lenses on digital mirrorless cameras, and some of them don’t even care what these goggles are. And it’s easy to detatch it from the lens, just some screws to open!

@@frozenf8 A goggled lens without the goggles, or a non-goggled lens with goggles added won't focus properly except at infinity. The error becomes larger the closer you focus.

Nothing wrong with autofocus! If you feel more comfortable with autofocus go for it. I like manual focus for certain subjects because of the fun factor
