I've been in the wedding photography/videography business for 12 years now and I shoot solo 90% of the time. During a wedding, I do have my 21yr old daughter help me with one stationary camera during the ceremony while I have three more cameras recording. Two are stationary and I have one on a gimbal. All the b roll and money shots are shot exclusively by me. To me it's super easy and I've been successful at it. BTW, the weddings I shoot are often huge with big ranch settings and minimum 300 guests. Last November I shot a wedding with 700 guests.

@@avsnj I shoot 95% catholic latino weddings. My wife is the photographer and I shoot video. We both work the entire day starting during morning prep until 9pm. I work video alone during the morning, after the ceremony, before the reception activities. My 21yr old daughter helps me with one camera on a tripod during the ceremony and evening activities. All my drone shots, b roll and money shots are shot by me and me alone. I film with 4 cameras during the ceremony and reception. I've worked this way since I started in 2011. It's really not that hard and not that stressful since I'm so used to it. I have shot entire weddings all by myself in a few occasions, especially small weddings. I've been told before that I can't deliver good work because of lack of help but I've been doing it for years and my business continues to thrive.

Awesome BTS, thanks for this! Absolutely awesome One thing that bothers me is the DJ. How does someone who (I'm assuming from this context) DJs many weddings and doesn't have a way the videographer can plug into his system. This is a normal request from any videographer. So I can't understand why they don't have an option for you Thanks again

Great video Jake! I personally love shooting solo. I always get plenty of coverage and I'm really happy with how my final films turn out. I only have two cameras (both a7S III's) so I do wish I had a few more cams to set up during the ceremony/reception but I also don't want to have a giant kit to lug around all day. Part of me is tempted to stop offering ceremony/reception edits. Just stick to highlight videos and then maybe upsell a full-day edit which will just have basic 2-cam edits of the ceremony/reception. Do you think it's possible to only offer highlight videos?? I think I just have trust issues and I don't feel like going through the trouble of finding second shooters 😅
@JakeWeisler

I think everyone should always offer ceremony edits! And you can easily do that with 2 cameras. Put one camera in the back, zoomed in on the couple and officiant for the whole ceremony!

Jake- can you make a video sharing some tips for working with photographers on the wedding day? I recently had a pretty frustrating experience with a wedding photographer. During the first look, he was pretty much on burst mode on the shutter (which definitely wasn't turned on silent shutter). This negatively impacted my audio for the first look. He also kept posing the couple for photos, but none of his poses involved movements, which made for some rather boring video content. It felt like he was only prioritizing what he needed and didn't care about the video team. I wanted to say something to him in a professional way during the wedding day, but was really worried it would cast a negative mood over the day. How do you set expectations in advance?

I absolutely love your mindset. I started shooting weddings last year and the more I thought about it, the more my mindset shifted from shooting a highlight video, to shooting a documentary. Even if you make a highlight video out of it, you're still shooting a documentary film, albeit a short one (Unless they bought the expensive package). After discovering Justin Porter and having my beliefs verified, and now hearing it come from you, I'm certain that's the right mindset. I'm trying to get into the Art of Documentary to level up my game

Well, you obviously nailed it, as always! Amazing to see how easy you dealt with the whole event all alone. Just wondering though, wouldnt have it made more sense to shoot full prime, even as a solo shooter? For example since you shot with the 85mm anyway, having a 50mm in place of the zoom may have allowed you to shoot @1.2 many more times, wouldnt it? I’m about to invest in my first ‘pro’ lenses particularly for weddings, and since this soloshooter situation is the same one i’m gonna experience myself, i’m curious to know your opinions about it (hesitating right now between a 24-70 and a 85+50mm combo investment, on top of renting a 70-200mm for each event) Thank you for your feedback, and again big bravo for all your work!

I am from Slovakia and I can’t understand lot of things. For example you have time to talk to camera. I don’t have time to drink or eat sometimes from 8:00 am until midnight :D For example what are guest / everybody doing after ceremony until eat / speeches? In Slovakia: civil (not church) ceremony 15 minutes, congratulations, and after that immediately speeches, dinner, first dance…. Every single part of wedding is going start immediately after previous part finish. When is everything on one place is really hard and when we have to move is insane for example preparation of bride 1. Place (parents house), preparation of groom 2. Place (parents house), than back to bride parents house because of Slovak habit “groom asking brides parents for bride hand” - approval for wedding from parents. Than 4, move is to church, than 5. Move is to wedding event place where is fun part dinner and dancing.

I just shot my first 1 person wedding solo yesterday, so nerve wracking. I was using a eos r100 which was definitely a starter cam for me. There was so much anxiety shooting my first wedding (Luckily my friend told me to have fun with it) but man I wanted to do the best I could. I think my next investment is going to be a 2nd camera for a static shot, 1 camera was so difficult to work with and constantly running around getting shots was the hardest part. I'm just getting started and wondering if weddings are even my thing, but I have another booked on June 8th.
