I was quite pleased to find this VHS tape last month. This is from a talent show at Westmar College in LeMars, Iowa. I believe it took place in the Fall of 1990 but it's possible it was the Winter or Spring of 1991. Anyway you slice it, I was roughly 19 years old. This was probably my second ever public performance.
Originally, it was supposed to be just me and Chris Radloff on bass guitar. (He's off to the left. You can't see him in the video at all, unfortunately.) Chris had only recently started to learn to play bass, and he would eventually play on an album/cassette I would record in my dorm room. (Some songs from that album are here on this channel.)
Anyway, somehow....for some reason.....at the last minute.....this other new fella at school wound up "playing drums" on his keyboard during the performance, too. I want to say his first name was "Darrell" but I'm not sure. He went by the name "King D" and was actually the act that followed me. He performed a rap and it was actually pretty good. But I digress....
My point is, he wasn't originally supposed to be part of my performance and, even though his drums SOUND like a keyboard, I do believe it helped the timing for the 5 minute song. So...wherever you are, thank you, King D. (I've tried to track him down but to no avail at the moment.)
So I was really getting into Bad Company at the time - both versions of the band - Paul Rodgers and Brian Howe. "Shooting Star" really stuck out for me when I learned it was inspired by Jimi Hendrix and/or Janis Jolin's life/career/death. My performance was inspired by a version I saw of Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora doing the song acoustically, sitting on chairs, during a concert.
Oh look. KZitem has blessed us with the Bon Jovi version that I fell in love with:
• Bon Jovi - Shooting St...
It still gives me goosebumps, guys.
Also this performance of mine was before I learned to change the key to suit me........and before my voice dropped. LOL
Okay, enough typing. I hope you like this!
