I have watched all three of your videos concerning how to make the 1859 Sharps paper cartridges. I am so very impressed with your video skills as well as the information you have passed on concerning how bullets were made in that era of firearms history. We take so much for granted. This was truly a wonderful presentation. As a person interested in history, this was absolutely eye opening and terrific. Thank you!

Nice hat ! Used to load a Sile Sharps Sporting Rifle back in the early 80s with combustible cartridges made with household grade aluminum foil ! Easy to form and the chamber was clean as a hounds tooth after every shot. Used a Navy Arms .54 bullet mold with good results. Would have loved an original style bullet like your Richmond Sharps. Great videos !!

I like the hat. I also would like to have more information about the o-ring in the breach, so I might be able to add it to my 1859 sharps reproduction carbine I've just obtained from Taylor's in Virginia, which I love by the way. I'm 72 years old & have been shooting mussel loading guns & cap&ball revolvers since I was 12 years old. Turner's Dixie Gun Works was the only ML. supply back in the 60's. Black Powder guns have come a long way since then.

I am currently working on getting my own Palmetto Sharps carbine up and running. I bought a few of those bullets, and plan on ordering the mold, too. Have all I need to make linen cartridges and been testing ways of manufacture and sizes to get the perfect cartridge. What was the fix on the breech that was made? Can you discribe?
@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
3 ай бұрын
In a nut shell, the breech block face is replaced with a precision machined version that uses a rubber "O" ring to seal the breech. The chamber insert is also replaced or fixed to make sure it can be get a proper gas seal. Larry Flees did my Garret Sharps and my buddies Pedersoli sharps.

Hi Mark, any chance we might someday see a video on how to make the linen cartridges for the Sharps? Based on my research the US Army switched over to the linen rounds after the paper cartridges didn't hold up well. I haven't tested it, but apparently the linen cartridges were also more accurate because they gave a consistent powder charge. There is also less fouling due to no powder being cut off near the chamber area.

What is your feeling about using nitrated papers for these paper cartridges? I've seen them used on period handguns (presumably to prevent leftovers in the chamber after firing) so for a breech loaded firearm such as the Sharps, nitrated papers might not make any difference but just curious if you had any comment. Interesting video though. Also interesting to see how critical sealing is for these firearms that don't have the benefit of expanding brass cases that act to plug escaping gases from the breech. Until your video I had never seen these older firearms being fired!
@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400
3 жыл бұрын
I don't recommend it for two reasons. First, the papers seem to burn up well or expel on firing through the muzzle due to the larger charge than is used in revolvers.. I rarely have any ash left behind. Second, if there is some ash, and you push a nitrated cartridge into it during loading, you might get a very embarrassing pre-mature ignition. I can't find any evidence that the standard Sharps cartridges of the day were nitrated.
@drcoolit
3 жыл бұрын
@@erasgonehistoricalmolds2400 Thank you for this insight into my query. You made an excellent point re the potential (though probably small but it would only have to happen ONCE!) for some residual "ember" to set off a new cartridge being placed in the chamber. Especially for a revolver, the likelihood that there would be anything akin to that scenario is exceedingly remote, but for placing a new charge in a breech loader immediately after firing, well yes, I can see THAT potential. Again, thank you for your note.
@messerist

I had the breech modifications done to my Sharps by Larry Flees. He does not recommend nitrated paper.
