Not that I’m saying I have the best way to do it, but I have made very good tool holder that mount on back splash (on thingiverse) so I didn’t want cable running that route, nor did I want yo see them. I ran them down opening at bottom of back splash (though my Z axis mounts to backside of ways) and just covered them in that split/corrugated plastic wire covers. My last industrial accident was 4 stitches down my fanger courtesy of my 5in angle grinder getting frisky. The tendon and knuckle have yet to return to "normal" some 3 years later. The nicks/chuck jaws bites are almost daily when clamping/deburring parts all day. Never fails to find the jaws when they are spinning 1000 rpm and your sand paper or scotch brite sends a finger into them.

It's much easier to mount in the front, much less exposed to chips and oil, and also Robin Renzetti argued at one point that it's more accurate in the front, because it's less affected by flex in the machine, since that's where the leadscrew is.

why not just convert it to CNC? wipe out the leadscrews insert some ballscrews and servos and you're ready to go... For handwheel fetishists they can get 2 digital wheels and wire them up accordingly. I had some magnetic scale installed from the beginning on but I only used them once for calibrating. I'm even making MT2 Tapers with my mini lathe via CNC that's something that would take much more time when doing it manually. When doing multiple same parts I just measure the first few parts and then let it go.. during the run I just measure some key parts if the size is still okay and I'm not over-stressing the (weak) stepper on my X axis.. my lathe is smaller than yours and I'm still fine with it.

I used a cable carrier on my lathe for the z axis, cross slide, compound and coolant cords and tubing. Really cleaned up the installation. It was placed on the back side of the lathe bed. Drilled a hole for the wires to exit just above the chip pan and added a cover to deflect chips and coolant from exiting. Very nice and neat installation. Every lathe is different and one needs to let their imagination go a little to come up with the most compact and protected installation as you just did.

Maybe someone else can wade in but I think I would be tempted to shove a Ferrite? ring? around the end of the cable near the scales. I didn't like the 10 thou wobble when the machine was operating, sure it's practically nothing but could end up being a taper on a longer critical tolerance part between centers if the effect is more pronounced as you approach the chuck. Definitely worth a further investigation to ensure it at least does not have some linear functional increase based on proximity; Possibly with a few cheap analog parts you can figure out some further suppression. Perhaps a better RF engineer than me (which would be almost anyone) can jump in with some tips. Feels like Ferrite's the right place to start.

That turned out awesome. Don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone mount the Z-axis scale on the front of the lathe before, but it sure saved you a lot of work taking the back off and you could also see better in the front. The X-axis mount is brilliant, another first seen like this by me. Here’s a tip for when you take the apron apart again. When going back on it will help you line up the half nuts if you clamp them on the lead screw, and then snug up those top screws. Do it several times clamping, unclamping and tightening the screws until when you engage the half nut it doesn’t pull the lead screw or cause it to flex. I had to mess with mine to get it lined up perfectly so as to not move the lead screw when engaging the half nut. Awesome video, enjoy that DRO.

The DRO has a tool library, so you can in theory swap tools in the toolpost, and swap tools in the library and have an absolute diameter. I haven't played with it, but I suspect on a small lathe, that will only get you so close due to flex in the machine.

If you're local and able to pick up the machine and transport it yourself, there might be some benefit to it being close. But if it's going in a crate and being shipped freight, I don't think I'd make a choice based on shipping distance. I'd focus on features, price, quality, and customer support. The crates all came from overseas originally anyway, and any shipper with any talent can destroy something just moving it across town. :)
