Hi style factory. Thanks for this very nice video. I have a shopify store and have been running it for months now. But I feel ready to separate. I want full control over the design aspects of my website. Although shopify is very nice and I really like using them. In the long run WordPress seems better. Is there a way I can transfer the data from my shopify website, so I don't have to start from scratch??? Thanks

Hey Tristan, thanks for your question. There are a couple of things I'd say - the first is that, so long as you're working with a good developer / designer, you can actually customise a Shopify store's design extensively. So if it's just aesthetics you're concerned about, I'm not sure that moving to WordPress is necessary. Where a move to WordPress becomes a good idea is when you want to have 100% control over hosting, technical SEO and content marketing - Shopify limits your options here. But to get a really good technical SEO setup on WordPress you need a really good developer and a great hosting service (both of which can be pricey). And for a pro WordPress setup, you'll usually need monthly site maintenance from a developer too, which combined with hosting costs can make things expensive on an ongoing basis. If you're working in a super competitive niche, great technical SEO can really make a difference and there are definitely advantages to be gained from using WordPress in that context (so long as you set things up right). But for most merchants Shopify should work perfectly well from an SEO perspective and extremely well from an ecommerce and security one. So to sum up, if you have a decent budget and a good business case for doing so, it's worth investigating WordPress. If not, Shopify should serve your needs very well. Do check out our Shopify vs WordPress comparison at www.stylefactoryproductions.com/blog/shopify-vs-wordpress for the full rundown of all the relative pros and cons though!

No probs at all! I meant to reply to one other aspect of your query, about getting data out of Shopify. This is done easily enough via a CSV file or third party apps like ExIm.

Sorry about the delayed response here Luai. If you're based in Turkey you'll need to add a payment gateway that is supported for use with the Lira - the built-in one, Shopify Payments, isn't. You can view suitable payment gateways for Turkey here: shopify.pxf.io/GjAMjV (affiliate link).

Hello! Since Shopify is hosted, I think you should have compared it with the hosted version of WordPress.

A fair point - the counterargument would be that most professional online merchants on WordPress use the self-hosted version.

@@Melody-yu9ue True, but you don't need to be a pro for both of the CMS. The difference is that WordPress has a higher learning curve in return for more customizability and control. It just depends on the website. Simple? Shopify. Too advanced? WordPress.

After reading the comments, it seems even though you are aware that WordPress has an edge over its counterpart, you are leaning towards Shopify. You can correct me if I'm wrong. Why is that? You don't seem to have a neutral stance as the one you've tried to take in the video.

Thanks for the feedback - I think that looking at our replies etc., where we've put the case for Shopify it's been where the quality and quantity of ecommerce features have been specifically discussed. How good WordPress is as an ecommerce solution depends on the ecommerce plugin used, and, with the exception of WooCommerce, it's hard to find any that offer as broad a range of functionality as Shopify (especially when you factor in things like point of sale features, VAT MOSS, payment gateway availability and multi-currency selling - with even WooCommerce arguably struggling to compete some of those areas). We recognise that WordPress is the much better solution though for making truly bespoke websites, can bring significant advantages from a technical SEO point of view and is by far the better choice for projects that combine large scale content publishing or content marketing with online selling. Hope this helps and feels fair :)

Technically, you can do more with WordPress - you can build any sort of site you like with it. It's also better for content management and content marketing applications. But Shopify is generally easier to get going with and a much better 'out of the box' option for things like dropshipping and point of sale.

Wordpress is a no brainer unless you're a complete noob. Shopify takes a cut out of every sale you make...wtf? :P
@StyleFactoryTV
Жыл бұрын
Cheers for the comment Alan - we feel it's a bit more complicated than that though. First there's a lot of complete noobs out there and they need catering for too :) Second, how good the ecommerce setup in WordPress is will depend entirely on the ecommerce plugin you use; they are not all created equal. Third, Shopify doesn't take a cut of sales if you use its own payment gateway system, Shopify Payments. And finally there are a lot of features that Shopify gives you that are not easy to lay your hands on in WordPress without either coding or paid-for plugins. That's not to say we have a preference for Shopify - a well set up WordPress site can be a terrific solution for ecommerce, and it's certainly a better platform for any project that mixes ecommerce with publishing or content marketing. It's just that there are pros and cons associated with both platforms, and it's not a simple case of one being definitively better than the other. Check out these links for a deeper dive into the differences between the two solutions: Shopify vs WordPress: www.stylefactoryproductions.com/blog/shopify-vs-wordpress Shopify vs WooCommerce: www.stylefactoryproductions.com/blog/woocommerce-vs-shopify

6 - wordpress is free
@StyleFactoryTV
2 жыл бұрын
Indeed! But it's not _quite_ that simple. The CMS is free, but you will still need to pay for hosting and, if selling online, an ecommerce plugin. Maintenance will also need to be factored in - you'll either need to spend some time doing this yourself each month, or commission somebody to do it. WordPress is undeniably brilliant, but in truth, it's hard to do much with it entirely for free.

wordpress is better, Just that you need to be a bit more technical with it. Shopify is basically for people who don't know anything about building a website and don't want to learn
@StyleFactoryTV

Thanks for the insights. We'd agree that WordPress is the more sophisticated website builder by far. However, things get more complicated when it comes specifically to ecommerce features, because WordPress doesn't give you any - you have to rely on an ecommerce plugin to add them. And that's where things get interesting, because most of the available plugins don't give you nearly as many ecommerce features as Shopify. WooCommerce is the key exception here - we have a blog post comparison of WooCommerce vs Shopify at www.stylefactoryproductions.com/blog/woocommerce-vs-shopify and a video comparison at kzitem.info/news/bejne/lJih23mAfYOXjaw - these resources may also be of interest.
