Wow! I didn’t think Japanese were into bulk shopping like in North America 😮

Most aren't, especially if they don't have the space to store things or don't have a car. A lot of people who live in the city outskirts or in more rural areas will buy in bulk occasionally.

Considering that the trunk is in the back of the car, parking backwards makes no sense. Otherwise, their Costco is pretty awesome.

This is such a well shot video, I've already watched it several times in a row! Really appreciated the descriptions in the corner of all the items. Did you get any strange looks from locals for filming in the Costco? I think I would feel very self concious.

Thank you! I didn't get too many looks (that I noticed at least lol). I think it takes a lot of getting used to, especially if you're shooting yourself talking or something. I'm still self conscious about it to be honest!

Looks busy, you must have gone on the weekend. I usually go to that store but during the week, less crowded. I switch back and forth between the Tama-Sakai and the Kawasaki store, they have a better selection.

Wow. Somethings are exactly the same others are completely different. How many Japanese can read Korean? I love going to my local H mart (Asian super grocery store) and just trying out different products but I'm hopless if there isn't English on the packaging. I'm likely going to be headed to Japan in the future, one hurdle I'm anticipated while I'm there is finding clothing that fits. I'm 6'4". Would Costco carry American sizes? It's a challenge finding my size at Costco here in the States.
@barrettish
3 жыл бұрын
Yeah definitely a mix of stuff. I'd say most Japanese can't read Korean lol. I know of H Mart but haven't been to one yet... I want to check one out! To be honest I haven't looked carefully at the clothing sizes at Costco. My guess is there's more American sizes there, but if you have trouble finding your size at US Costcos, Japan's probably won't be any better for you, unfortunately...

how to distinguish the US beef from the Japan beef ? - i don't want that medicine induced meat on my table ... / Any vegan or vegetarian options ? (apart from the seaweed) // also, the organic offer (in all divisions) seems a bit on the low side
@barrettish

I don’t know specifics but Japanese beef is typically more marbled and more expensive. There are some vegan/vegetarian/organic items but it’s not a majority because it reflects the market and the demand.

Thanks for posting this Barrett- this is a great overview of COSTCO in Japan - the carts are smaller than in the US and it is one of the few plastic-bag free shopping opportunities in Japan. I go to the one in Hiroshima once/month and was surprised the staff said for every costco they aim for at least 70% of locally sourced products which is interesting as you see a lot of imported fruit and veg and meat, right? I hope they can transition to reuse some of the food and bakery containers in future as there is a lot of plastic waste with those. The supply chain for the company is very efficient and they also have a decent online store now in English and Japanese if you can't get there yourself which is great during coronavirus stayathome as well as caters to people without cars, living with disabilities or without a store nearby.

You are in the wrong country if you want less plastic use. LOL Japan wraps plastic in plastic and give you a plastic bag to put it in.

Oh interesting! That's pretty good, 70% sounds quite high too. I guess I shouldn't expect anything less, Costco has a pretty good reputation from what I know. Thanks for sharing! I heard about their online store, I usually go for meats and fish though and I heard they don't ship those...

Reverse parking is a variation of turning footwear toes towards the door in the genkan. It seems silly since whether you back out of a space, or back into it, you still have to back up--oh boy, three variations of a phrasal verb in one sentence! Actually though, it does make coming out of a space easier, and you are less likely to run someone over. Costco elicits mixed feelings for me, since there is no way I could consume at that level, and where would I put all that stuff? One thing I learned living in Japan, less is more...
@barrettish
4 жыл бұрын
Makes sense! I think for Costco though, it makes more sense to go head first since we have to load a bunch of stuff in the trunk. It's usually busy and people want the stall so they're more willing to wait for you to get out of it so they can get it rather than wait for you to park in front of them. But I guess it's habit. I don't get to go to Costco often but usually go for meats and what not - stuff that can be frozen and stored.

Oh my god! Going to Costco in Japan has been on my bucket list for a while, but I've never been able to squeeze it in while I've been there. This is a video my life has been missing up till now!! Thanks Barrett. It's so cool to see all the things that look similar, and all the things that look so different... reverse parking at Costco... how do they get the massive carts between the cars, to get to the boot? 🤔
