Awesome! I came upon a Walgreens while I was out scrapping one evening that just got a roll-off box and they had their coolers go down. They emptied everything out and I had snacks for weeks along with cheeses, deli meats, cold brew coffee, creamer, butter and milk. I packed up mine and my neighbors fridge in one trip lol.

I'm surprised the businesses don't lock their dumpsters. I used to live in a city and homeless people/scrappers would get into my trash cans and take stuff. That part I didn't mind. Unfortunately, they would pull or dump everything out of the trash can and take what they wanted and walk away. Leaving me to clean up their shit. Or... my shit technically? Ha. I put a pad lock on it after the first few weeks and they would try to open it not realizing it was locked at first and flip my camera off. I got so many good laughs out of it.

It’s a good tool for me. I’m liking the $0.02-0.04/mile operating cost, that’s my average since I do the majority of my charging from home. There’s hundred of thousands of 5+ yr old teslas on the road with 100k miles on them and EVs are up to 7% of all vehicles on the road. It’s just a technological shift, like back when the iPhone was just a fancy phone for rich yuppies, now they’re ubiquitous.

That security company dumpster was giving me some massive flashbacks. I worked security installs for so long my brain was identifying every product as you were picked it out of the dumpster. They were just tossing Honeywell 16.5v transformers galore man, I always wondered what the scrap value on those would be what with how much copper they packed into them, we were selling those guys for 15$ a pop as replacement parts. It was a little jarring to see just how much of that would go to straight into a landfill if you weren't out there scrapping it (my old company actually paid employees a bonus on any material we brought back as scrap because they sent it all off for scrap/recycling so we only needed 1 normal dumpster for 30+ employees in a warehouse, everything else got sorted, stripped and sent off to be scrapped). Keep an eye open for Honeywell heat detectors getting tossed, those guys for the most part all have a big copper disk you can just pop right off the top for scrap.

Layperson here. Is dumpster diving illegal across the US? Or is it state specific? Can businesses tell you to vacate a dumpster? It's interesting that anyone would be mad at you for diving. In my mind, the business had willingly parted with all of it, so why are they upset someone is taking it?
@wnytrashtrucks

@LoveInTheDumpster
6 ай бұрын
It’s a bit of a grey area. They’re pretty much all on private property so i’m always very respectful if they ask me to leave I do so, I never leave a mess. I absolutely never argue with them. But at the end of the day it does have value. I found that one way to flip the conversation is to actually offer to pay them. They don’t usually take me up on it, but it makes them realize that it has value. Then you’re having a conversation and not a confrontation. And a few times when that happens they’ll open up the back door and help load a bunch of scrap in my truck because it’s also helping them out. Saving some space in their dumpster.

Charging at home is always going to be the cheapest. Using the fast chargers is effectively as expensive as if you were to fill up with gas ... which I don't mind and if I happen to be near one I'll top the truck off and work on some videos while it's charging.

Sure. There's a lot of different grades of wires. My yard breaks them down by % of copper by weight. You've got your low grade insulated wire at 30-39% ($0.35/lb), that's going to be anything you clip off an appliance like a fan, mircowave, lamp, chare cords, extension cords, etc. The next step up would be romex at 40-49% ($0.55/lb), that's commonly used in the wiring behind your walls. Then you have #1 insulated at 90-99% ($1.10/lb), that's 12 gauge wire and thicker. The rule of thumb would be if you took that wire and bent it, it'd stay bent. It's the wire that's inside the romex or bx cable.
