For me, the fat tire allows me less worry when I go on the grass or small rocks and gravel as well as the dirt and tree roots. It seems to handle everything so well. While I do like the roads, we like to do a lil side trips into the woods and dirt trails. But we definitely use the roads in town. I like the fact that you are still buying the ebikes -even after all the trouble you’ve had,with having them stolen.

I have ridden Road Bikes forever! I’ve done Centuries and week long bike tours. So when we began full time RVing, the campground roads were wicked and the fat tire appealed to me. So, I went with the Lectric folding bike. It had plenty of juice for speed and trails. My favorite trail was from Diamond Caverns to Mammoth Cave park. Thanks for your interest in biking, full time RVing and your very helpful videos.

I had an ebike for over two years before it was liberated from my cruel and heartless ownership. It takes a wile to get to know your riding habits like which gears you're comfortable with on your ride as well as your terrain. I usually kept an eye on the amount of power I have remaining and judge accordingly allowing for a safe amount of reserve power since it's not in the best interests of the battery to be totally exhausted before recharging. I have another bike now . It's human-powered and pedaling is better than the ebike and is very light. I lucked out finding an old racing bike from the 1980s. A few modifications and it's great. I ride for the cardio and it's fairly flat here in Edmonton Alberta and there are trails along the riverbanks and valleys. The transportation system is positive towards all bikes and the buses have carriers for the bikes. .. Cheers to you ..

Hello Liz and Paul from Ouray CO! I really hope you two are doing well. Thank you very much for another really outstanding video! This one is really great to highlight most considerations when looking to get into ebikes. We've chatted before on your other ebike videos. We just got our travel trailer in December 2021. We installed a solar system in January 2022. Unfortunately, in February 2022, the trailer was hit by a snow plow at its storage facility. I just picked the trailer up in April 2022. And....while I was picking it up, I just headed straight out for a short 3 day boondock trip. Our overall mission statement for this trailer is to do 1-2 week boondocking trips, hopefully monthly, in CO and the immediate surrounding states. So, we'd predominately be on national forest or bureau of land management dirt roads. And, we'd occasionally use the trailer to stay at a place that is in close proximity to a town or city that we want to explore. So, we feel ebikes would be a great way to add to our local exploration, whether it is in the national forest or out on the desert dirt trails. Out of this video, I homed in on battery size and motor size. At this point, we don't know what we don't know, with regards to what kind of terrain we'd be predominately in; nor how far we'd think we want to go. Neither myself or wife are speed demons; so cruising around at 12-14mph is just fine. We also have a long hair german shepherd; so I doubt we'd really be using it to go out for an 8 hour, stop and go exploration, more than just occasionally (probably more inclined to do that in the cooler months as he can just stay in the trailer then). Side story...I did test ride my neighbor's Himiway in the summer of 2021 here in Ouray. I happened to have my dog with me. It was really hilarious to see him running to keep up. An encouraging development: though he has never ran with me on a bike ride, he pretty much stayed in a heel during the ride. I've got a linebacker build, so am in the 240lb zone. Add to it, of course, in most of the CO areas, there will be some hills associated with rides. On the other end of the consideration, both bikes would be in the back of a long bed pick up with a folding cab topper. So....over all, I can see the benefit of the 750w motor , as well as a battery that would be approx > 17amp hours. But, those folding bikes definitely have a benefit too. I've test rode several ebikes (I travel for my job, so have gone to the Lectric distributor in Phoenix, the Juiced bikes in San Diego, Rad's in San Diego, and eLux in L.A. My wife also rode an eLux in WI. We really enjoyed the eLux (it has a 19ah battery and has a very comfortable cruiser type position), but it also has a hefty price tag (approx $3200 each now; it has fallen victim to supply shortages and high demand). Aside from the price tag and bike size, something like those Juiced or eLux would probably be the best for our area (that is just a gut feeling). On the other end of the spectrum, 2 folding Lectrics (I did see they just released their Premium model that has 19ish amp hrs from 2 batteries) can be got relatively cheap and could be a quick way to quit kicking the can down the road. I need to get my wife on a few more bikes when she comes with on my work trips. She gets sore wrists on traditional mountain bikes really quick, so we have to be conscious of the riding position. Anyways....the hunt continues! Thank you again for your input and perspectives. I really value it, as well as the time you put into your productions. In the interim, I'll hop over to your bike channel and do a few vicarious trips on an ebike that I don't have. Safe travels!
@LizAmazing

Thanks for your comment Alan, and so sorry your rig got hit by a snow plow! Yes, so much to think about when shopping for an ebike. As far as foldables, we find them harder to deal with, so bulky and awkward. We much prefer handling a regular bike when lifting onto a rack, wheeling into storage. Also, your posture is different on a folding bike, you are sitting more upright. This may or may not be a plus for you. I agree that a 750w is a good choice. Hope to see you on the bike trail someday!
@campingalan

@@LizAmazing Hello Liz and Paul! Yes...it was a sad day when I got the call from the campground owner where we store our rig. I have no clue why they were trying to plow right up against the trailer. Oh well....we're up and going! Thank you very much for your feedback. Probably for my wife, the posture is absolutely critical. Her wrists get sore with the typical mountain bike-esque posture. I really want it to be a positive experience; or it will be a rolling paper weight. I retired out of the army, so am somewhat used to things that are made for everybody, but satisfy nobody hehehehe. One of our underlying mission statements for the bike would be to be able to go to the neighboring town, which is 10 miles away, to do music events, or maybe for dinner and such. It is a 1000ft drop in elevation to get there; so a 1000ft climb to return. I suspect that one of the basic foldable bikes would probably bare make it. The newer dual battery lectric bike would definitely make it. Then it would be a matter if the features that annoy you two come to play with me (us). I've ridden the Juiced at their plant in San Diego. There is a reasonably steep hill right off of their lot. Those Juiced bikes can shoot right up the hill; I believe I was still able to do 17ish mph going up. Probably one consideration for us will be to just get a few camping trips under our belt and see where we are on space. Our trailer does have a hitch that we could put the bikes on, but I sure would love to be able to get them inside the truck bed (which has a foldable topper too); mainly for weather protection. Safe travels!!

I have also been a cyclist for years and at one point even raced, but I now also have added an ebike. I don’t care what people say. I live in Vermont and it is hilly and I am getting older! That one is a hub drive. If it's helping you get up the hills, which is should with its 750W motor, then you probably don't need a mid drive. We LOVE the RipCurrent and will be riding those on our upcoming bike ride. Happy riding in Vermont, lucky you!

thank you for this very informative video. I hope my bride and I will have e-bikes in the future and this video has helped me to understand what issues we need to research. I do want to mention something that might be a topic for a future video. I've been a motorcyclist for most of my adult life which of course is a very different world. However, years ago I worked with an avid bicyclist who came to work one Monday after suffering an accident while riding in a large group of bicyclists one weekend.. I hadn't realized she had missed several days of work. I was frankly shocked at how injured she was, which included hand, shoulder and facial injuries. She estimated that she was doing about 12 mph when she wrecked. Her injuries really gave me pause as I couldn't believe one could sustain that much injury at such a slow speed. So when you are discussing ebikes that can do 20 mph and higher, I am seeing people wearing helmets and no other safety gear and of course, bicycle helmets offer no face protection. No one expects to wreck when they set out on a ride. Recreational ebike riders are often in skimpy clothing with no protective gear or gloves. Now that ebikes can take riders to speeds (I think you mentioned as high as 28 mph) they might not attain when pedaling unassisted, it may be time to have a conversation about protective gear.
@LizAmazing
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Vinnie! Thanks for your comment, such an excellent topic. Paul had an accident four years ago on a regular bicycle that put him in the ICU for four days: five broken ribs, collapsed lung, broken collarbone, cracked vertebrae. Luckily he was wearing a helmet or he wouldn't be here today. We both know first hand the importance of safety gear. If someone is taking unnecessary risks it's only a matter of time before their luck runs out.

I've had 6 ebikes over the last decade or so and because of the particular place I lived range was never a concern. There were charging stations everywhere. From Walmart, outside the apartment complex, near convivence stores, or just random places. Easy to lock it and charge it using an app on the phone. My biggest concern was, not if it would break, but when it would break. The last time, I bought 2 for about 150 dollars each. They lasted about 2 years each. Oh the memories.

I have three batteries. In 2020 I purchased a ecotric hammer bike. For the price and it was about $1,300 it has 1300 miles and the only thing I had to do so far knock on wood is change the brakes. If I had more money I would have bought a bike with the mid Drive motor so I could go up hills better with a wagon that is a problem sometimes. If I could pedal it wouldn't be a problem at all. Boy am I glad I watched the video before I bought my bike because I would not have been able to do anything if I bought a 500 W e-bike. There are laws for people who have one leg like I do we can ride places others can't. I actually had a cop after me at Hamlin Beach Park LOL I accidentally shined my lights in his face. He was following me so I pulled over and he went by me he was sitting at the end of the road with his lights at my face and I got lost it's hard to see it no and I was going around the campground. I got back to my campsite and I said is there a problem he says you're not supposed to ride an e-bike at the state parks. I told him I had one leg he said you do like he could not see the crutches sticking out of the back of my bike LOL I believe my e-bike saved my life

I'm 70 and my husband is 78 he walks 5 to 10 miles a day at the YMCA but I am more sedintary, and have a new knee, since 2014 I would like a bike that I could pedal and have assistance when I need it. We are just approaching the thought of buying a bike and we are watching and reading all we can. My question is Falling on your bike. I watch another guy say you are going to fall but most of the time it is coming to a stop or crossing at a corner. He also said being able to put your leg out to assist with the weight of the bike. I'm 5'8 and my husband is shorter 5'6.
@LizAmazing
2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynda, great question! Yes, there is definitely a learning curve with ebikes as they are so much heavier than traditional bikes. I found getting started the most challenging. That's why adding throttle from a stop is so helpful. And try to get a step thru as it will be easier mounting and dismounting and less likely that you will fall. Paul is 5'6 and prefers a step thru, as do I and I am your height. You can avoid falling at all if you take the bike to a parking lot straight away and just ride around getting used to how the weight feels. Plus practice starting and stopping in a non traffic situation. Best of luck!

I was planning on hauling our e-bikes (rad mini's) on our next trip out west. I did some research and several trails only allow class 1 bikes. Moab canyon pathway had that restriction, but ive seen youtubers riding lectric bikes on it.

We were on that very trail in the video! We did not see any restrictions but this was about 18 months ago so something may have changed. I'd go ahead and pack those bikes as you'll most likely find plenty of places to ride. Have fun!

Your 100% correct People on trails with regular bikes think e bikes are not allowed on trails due to signage. Those signs are for mopeds motorcycles and razors 10 years ago not e bikes. Class 1 and 2 are allowed just about everywhere. So annoying hearing these self entitled women screaming at you...Get off the trail! Your not allowed...shut the hell up and mind your own business and just ride your skinny ass along. They think they own the park. Never had one guy say anything to me when I'm out ridding.

One correction - twist throttle or thumb throttle or NO throttle. I have an ebike and I love it. But it's a class 3 pedelec. I wish that they would find another name for a throttle ebike and not lump them in with pedelecs.

Hello, been following you two for a while and find your channel very informative. I am in Florida with relatives and just tried an ebike. I am totally hooked and plan to purchase. I was leaning towards one with a throttle for all the reasons you two have discussed. However, the people I am with told me that Florida is working on legislation that will ban the use of throttle ebikes on their bike trails. Have you heard about this and do you know if other states are doing this? Riding on streets if I purchased an Ebike with a throttle just brings an added layer of danger so now I am torn. Would love to know your thoughts. Thanks! And keep generating content!!!!!
@LizAmazing

Hi Lynne! This is a great question. I would recommend getting a bike with a throttle because it may take years for the law to be enacted, if it ever does. And once it is enacted, you can just disconnect the throttle. Easy Peezy. And thanks for your kind words about our channel. We look forward to seeing you on the bike trail!

Liz and Paul do you have any thoughts on ebike brands and the brand of motors? I have test ridden an EG Geneva mid drive ebike. It has a 500w Dapu motor with a throttle. There is one review on KZitem. Haven't seen that many reviews. It's has the same motor as Pedego but Pedego is limited to 20mph. I prefer to shop at the dealers.
@LizAmazing

Almost all the ones we've ridden have been Bafang motors. We have not heard of the Geneva. It's such an emerging market that you are wise to read the reviews. Best of luck!

@@LizAmazing Thank you for responding. I know Liz and Paul you are busy but could you look up the EG Geneva and Gazelle and let me know what you think about them. There is one or two reviews on the Geneva on KZitem. The Specialized uses the broze motor. My understanding is torque level is important and the ability to go over 20mph. I don't quite understand the mechanics of not being able to pedal over 21mph on a 20mph limit ebike. I got one Specialized up to 22mph.

You guys really should do a video on consumerism and over-consumption... something that you actually know about. The difference between cheap ebikes like what you are riding and great ebikes is as much, even more, the frame as it is the quality components. You can have the best components possible on a crappy frame and have a "bad" ebike. With knowledge and prior planning, you can buy an ebike that will last for years possibly decades with proper maintenance. Not just a toy that you click-the-button on after watching KZitem videos like this one, and then let sit in the garage or throw away when you learn you own a POS. I don't think you're capable of giving good advice on buying an ebike when you ride what you do. You hit a lot of the key points but you haven't learned them for yourselves, but rather from others that have shared what they *learned* themselves. How can you truly compare a cheap ebike to an expensive ebike if you only ride what you do? Have you ridden a hub motor ebike? Have you ridden an ebike with full suspension or a bike without oversized tires? What about riding a bike laden with a couple hundred pounds of gear? Not everyone is going to hang them on the back of another underused toy and drive somewhere to ride for a couple hours. Maybe a key question should be is the bike going to be a toy or is it going to be a useful vehicle to replace a second car? But... if you made a video on overconsumption for kids to watch and learn from our mistakes, maybe, just maybe they won't emulate Boomers like us, riding the wave of overconsumption and capitalism to the grave. Don't you have grandkids that you worry about? Stay safe.

Wow, was this comment meant for another channel, perhaps? Sometimes when you finish watching a video and start writing a comment it will post on the next video. We only talk about quality ebikes which we actually ride. In fact, earlier this year we rode from Pittsburgh to DC (370 miles) on our Juiced RipCurrent ebikes, which cost $2500. We get told all the time we are not reviewing AFFORDABLE ebikes since our $2500 bikes are out of reach for many people. They are not $10,000 Specialized, but our audience is fulltime RVers (like us) so those bikes are not a good fit for most of our viewers. We love the quality components on the Juiced bikes and stand by their product. We each put thousands of miles on our Juiced RipCurrents. Here is our ebike playlist with reviews: kzitem.info/door/PLSTkbVK0L14VAOJivDCprYn7Cs904xhBc

After doing a lot of research, I thought I wanted an ebike with a throttle. The only ebike I've been able to test ride comfortably has been the Trek Verve 3+, but alas, no throttle. After riding 5 different manufacturers, I've found that my height (5'3") limits my comfort and some bikes I measured a Small, some a Medium. This discrepancy leads me to be overly cautious about buying online. Any recommendations for shorter riders of ebikes with a throttle? I am not very active and am planning to use this to get out more. I'm concerned about not being able to get up hills without a throttle.
