I made one glaring mistake. The idler shaft has a regular right hand thread. For some reason I thought I was turning it the other way and even looked at the threads when editing “to confirm.” I’ve been sick and was clearly delirious editing. 😂

Very well done video. I have always been fascinated by the Mark VII. I had a larger shop I would definitely have one to compliment my 3 Mark V's and all the rest of my Shopsmith "toys".I am so looking forward to following your progress. Thanks for making this video. I'm sure it will be helpful to other Mark VII owners.

Thank you! I'm sure 3 Mark V's get plenty of work done for yah.

Mark VII owner following. Have had mine (used to be Dad’s-so original to family) since the 1980s. I haven’t torn mine completely down (so eager to watch your efforts). I have had the motor rewound, replaced belts, repaired that spring in the quill (my problem was the little self-taping screw it hooks onto broke). I am surprised if you can’t find the oil holes on the shaft. My unit is a couple years older than yours (I can tell because the table height crank on yours is round…which came after my straight table crank handle). Mine is a 1963. I still use original speed control (nylon) but have an AL backup…switch still works…I still have the dust collector attached, but don’t use it. Would kill for your caster wheels though…Dad didn’t opt for those.

The caster wheels on mine seem like they need some TLC to work right, but I'm certainly happy to have them! Sounds like you put quite a bit of TLC into yours. I enjoy hearing about other Shopsmith owners' experiences keeping their equipment in tip-top shape!

I have a Mark VII and have the same problem with the idler shaft and looking for a replacement. I'm interested to see how you fix it.

I'm working with a guy named Miken on the Shopsmith forums. He's going to make one for me and another Mark VII user. We think we can "delete" the threaded portion and use better e-clips to keep everything in place and make producing them easier. I'm hopeful it'll work out nicely!
