7:12 - Start by your ear and when you come across if you want "Backspin" just comes straight across at the elbow down. - Pull up with the elbow to get Topspin.

It "appears" to me that you use very little to no wrist snap with this serve, is this true? I love the serve and have been working on it for some time with limited success. Good video and explanation by you, thanks.

If you change your stance for the sidespin serve, won't your opponent figure that out after a few times?

I like to invest in a racket that would give me lots of spin on my serves, top spins and chops...what kind of racket would you recommend?..blade and rubber types...maybe brand?

Great video Joey. How do you think of wrist movement with your backhand serves? think I might focus too much on the wrist when I should be driving more with the forearm/shoulder/hip rotation with my backhand serve.

Thanks Bruce! Good question! The extra wrist action will allow for more spin potential. I don't personally use a lot of wrist on my BH serve because I generally aim to make sure I can keep it short, low, and as simple as possible. I use my BH serve for very specific situations in a match where I might be feeling nervous or if I want a clean ball as a return. My goal is for a reliable serve with little to no risk. All that being said, I don't discourage the wrist action on BH ( or any serve.) The simple/low risk BH serve is how I use it in my game, but it doesn't have to be that way in your game. The wrist will generally add extra spin at the cost of some reliability. However, if it's making you miss then I recommend toning it back until you can be consistent with it. Then add it back in. The arm/shoulder/hip rotation are all good to have in the serve as well.

First of all great video, keep it up. I have a question, can pendulum grip be used for backhand serves?
@TableTennisJunkie

Thanks! It would allow for better wrist motion but unfortunately the index finger would get in the way on the BH serve so I don't recommend it. I go into that a little bit in my latest video. kzitem.info/news/bejne/o5eJ0o2HinughW0

What you recommend beginners to do to generate "sidespin" is actually corkspin, where the axis of rotation is aligned with the trajectory of the ball. It has quite a different effect on impact than real sidespin, where the axis of rotation is more vertical. Not taking anything away from the good tutorial here. Cheers.

I am sorry to deflate you, but most of this is nonsense. For starters, on every serve you are doing you are putting sidespin on the ball e.g. when you say you are doing backspin you are doing side and backspin and that is why the ball curves off to you left. You are also claiming this is a short serve when it isn't, it is actually a half-long or medium serve because it bounces twice on the table. A short serve would bounce more than twice before coming off the end of the table. So a valiant try and the serves are pretty good but you are not describing what you are doing. You may fool the uninitiated on this page but not anyone who really knows how to play the game.

A short serve bounces twice or more and is un loopable. A medium or long serve is loopable. U are spewing nonsense and are probably like 1200 or less

@@p1ngpongmasta I suggest you read my comment again. And in response to your answer, a short serve would bounce more than twice on the table. A half long serve would bounce twice and a long serve would bounce once. I repeat, in the video you say that you are serving a backspin serve when in fact you are making a back and sidespin serve. And lastly, there is no need for a hammer grip to make these serves and your stroke is far too long.
