As a senior golfer that began playing golf at age 50, I was trying to perform full back swing in order to get more distance. But since I watch your video I practice my new short back swing at home, and I realized that it can be easily perform so I will enjoy a lot more years of playing golf without hurting my body.

I’ve given up on golf ⛳️ two times in my life. The last time I left the game I became a runner and ran fourteen marathons and thirty scored half marathons. The pandemic has been good for me. I’ve written extensively about the golf swing. So now I will never again give up on golf. I was missing the cornerstone of the swing that you explained. This is very good thank you. Somehow I got to this shortening regime myself last year and my golf, distances and accuracy improved dramatically. But I didn't see any coaches advocating this method. Since then I have tried more to lengthen my swing- always wanting more!!! and the accuracy and consistency went down hill. So it's back to the range again to get those short swing basics engrained. Especially now I have your lesson to turn to. Many thanks.

If I try anything past a half swing, it will cause me to top/fat/miss the ball. So I’m m glad to see this video. I find it fascinating how your effortless swing at 12.55 sends it further than I can hit a PW with best effort 😟 I’ve only been playing a few months and I’ve found your videos the best to follow. I do believe though that I’m just never going to get any good distances. My 6 iron maxes out at about 130 - 140. I’ve tried the suggestions in your videos. I do weight shift and have light wrists etc. if I can just hit the ball more than 50% of the time, I’ll settle for that. Low expectations, but that’s about being realistic I think. Again, thanks for the videos they help.

"Short" backswing is misleading, creating an impediment to understanding what is really going on here. Note the shoulder turn is about 75-80º. That's near 90% of a "full" shoulder turn of 90º. At the same time, the hands are only traveling about 40-45% of "normal". This simply means the arms are not lifting off the rib cage, but keeping their relationship to the rib cage. Swinging like that is not only accurate and consistent, but when done correctly is extremely powerful. Since the arms are not lifted off the rib cage, no energy is expended returning them back to original position. The arm triangle is kept on it's plane, affording full use of arm mass. I've come to believe all the lifting of arms off the rib cage is completely wasted energy. Length of backswing should be redefined, based upon shoulder turn, not how far the hands travel.
@TheArtofSimpleGolf
3 жыл бұрын
Well said and yes for many, lifting arms can be trouble. In one of the recent videos, display how if they don;t lift at all, it wont be good either. It's a natural lift that will occur, just not much

Alex, I hit a bucket today, and it seemed like it worked for me best when I flared both feet out and put the ball a little in back of my stance. Hit 7 iron 160 consistently, which is good for me. Am I missing anything?
@TheArtofSimpleGolf

No it sounds good to me. Just be aware of the pressure into lead foot before you complete backswing.. so transition has flow

I have discovered that for irons, my best and most powerful swings are when my hands only go to 4 o'clock in the backswing (right handed). Shocking indeed.

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf for me, one exception to the 4 o'clock position is the 9 iron, for which m'y hands go to 3 o'clock in the backswing. Perhaps, this is related to the shorter shaft, that needs a longer backswing.

I think you made this video for me! lol I have always had a shorter backswing. No more than 3/4. when I was younger. I am 69 years young! :) Also I have never been a long hitter. Straight all day but always the shortest of my playing partners. Jon Rahm and Tony Fenau have short backswings. How do they generate the power that they have. What muscle(s) group have they developed to hit it so far with a half swing?

Lol! Well I’m sure it will help if you try 1-2 of the things mentioned. Those guys are athletes and do swing with hard velocity. Core strength for stability with very good flexibility as well as overal fast twitch (think of a sprinter ) So don’t compare to them too much!

How are you hinging your wrists in this video? You’re not using radial deviation, right? Instead your right wrist is just going into extension? I’ve heard different things on hinging and how to do.
@TheArtofSimpleGolf
3 жыл бұрын
Honestly... the best is the not try and force much. Having more flex in right hand can help folks compress and hit lower but depends on swing. Allowing the wrists to flow depending on grip as opposed to making them move is by far the bakers for simplicity and consistentcy
@canefan17

@@TheArtofSimpleGolf agree. Firm grip, oily wrists, and let the hinge happen naturally. Thanks for quick response.

I come back to this excellent tutorial every now and then as a reminder ! Been Playing the best golf of my life now for 2 months using this technique. As a mid to high handicapper shooting on average 95 -100, last few rounds 87, 87, 92, 93 and last weekend 85……….. slowly but surely focussing on less a aggressive swing, plotting shots through each hole and visualising every shot ! Fantastic coaching , it just works 👏🏽

Many thanks Alex- I’ve just found this lesson and it resonates so well- I’m getting a bit stiff now but I reckon this will get me swinging much less awkwardly. Simple Golf - it’s a 7 year learning process I’m told but thanks to you I’m getting there !

Hi Alex - was always trying to get as much shoulder turn as possible given the huge emphasis on gargantuan turns out there. After a 34 year military career, my joints just don’t move in my 60’s as they did in my teens. This is manna from heaven. Do you ever analyze Tony Finau , John Rahm or others who compete and win at the highest levels without a huge turn. Thank you for all you do!
