When I got my PDW, I opted for the pistol version without a brace due to the ATF's general ambiguity, subjective inconsistencies and probability of arbitrary changes to their pronouncements over time. Nor did I choose the SBR version because of the hassle. I use a single point sling, with a technique where I brace both of my elbows against my torso. When holding the PDW on target and looking down at my forearms they form a near-perfect isosceles triangle. When I look directly ahead, the pdw is centered and I'm looking directly through my red dot sight. When I fire, there is very little movement and I'm quickly back on target for the next shot. I spent time practicing and now it's second nature. Works great for me.
@zoomzoom3950

@@mathewnottingham1006 yes! great to hear. I've also worked out a left and right side stance based on the technique I described. It presents a smaller target to opponents. Without a brace or a stock, the PCC pistol is much smaller, maneuverable and versatile. Currently working on walking and running while keeping aim somewhat "on target" which is challenging, not impossible. Much more movement without a brace or stock. Cheers!

The difference is simple... If your barrel's overall length is less than 16" there are 2 options you have (for now, at least) if you wish to remain on the right side of the law., An "AR pistol" uses a stabilizing brace and cannot have a vfg attached to the rail, while an SBR can be configured any way you'd like. The difference is an additional $200 tax and an additional background check and waiting period if you go the SBR route.

I have a datapoint to add on the interstate NFA transport rules: we have facilities in multiple states. And can travel into a 3rd just driving to them. We spoke to BATFE about it and asked if we could have a “transport” form good for say 12 months or quarterly? The agent made clear it was NOT necessary for us to use the NFA transport form since we own the properties in question. Her position was we own the property. It’s known as ours. We could even take an NFA item out there and stay for an extended period of time. (Her example was a 2 week hunting season). Then come home when done. Obviously local laws and securing the item still apply. Her position was they would only need to be notified if for some reason I changed my residence to one of these locations. When pressed on driving through the 3rd state with the NFA item? She indicated as long as we were in transit, it was fine. Yes, she indicated we could stop for gas, food or visit friends, etc. As long as the gun resides were the BATFE is told where it lives. For those confused, our major city circle freeway rings through 3 states. So crossing state lines multiple times a day is common. As for the brace thing, we have never done it. We just SBR our stuff. But the “pistol” on the CCW license seems like a good plan. Regards, Marky

Chris, excellent presentation on a very difficult, and important topic. I've submitted paperwork, plus the $200 for the tax stamp, to the BATFE for several different weapons, 2 SBR, and 1 SBS. I waited just about 6 months for approval on each. The 6 months was long, but once I had a legal SBR or SBS I felt very comfortable at any range using those weapons as well as using them for home protection. I also own 4 PDWs that I bought with the pistol brace attached and enjoy shooting them in a manner that allows me to safely and effectively engage the target, whether that means shouldering it or using the brace as intended. I am an old retired Colonel and my last trip back from Iraq I was diagnosed with progressive MS, so shouldering the weapon, often seated, is much safer than trying to use it as a stabilizing arm brace, as most of the AR pistols can be quite heavy. and hard to use one handed, and I've yet to find a two handed method to employ the weapon effectively without shouldering it. I dont know what the right answer is, but I do know that the ATF , by leaving their ruling of the stabalizing brace so ambiguous, it leaves gun owners in a precarious position teetering on the edge of legal vs illegal use. Lastly, I dont have any problem personally being registered with the BATFE, but I certainly respect others who do. I think the BATFE has been given a difficult mission and tries it's best to execute it in a manner best to protect our nations citizens. Do I agree with all the BS we have to wade through? No, but I also dont believe just anyone should own a 6 barreled minigun mounted on a tripod in the bed of their pickup.

there really is no difference in the brace vs stock. it works just as good as a stock. the atf are just idiots with the laws they make. i thought the point of not being able to have a short barrel rifle was because they didnt want a crime to be committed and the police be out gunned. but turn around and say if it has no stock or a brace it ok. really?? still the same high powered weapon and the police are out gunned until they realize the person has a rifle and the get theirs. most of their rules are dumb when you really break them down. they just want money

All the possible controversy around AR pistol braces is why I decided to use the Thordsen Customs Cheek Rest in our AR pistol builds. Thordsen Cheek Rests are a great option for a solid shooting platform and they are not overly expensive.

My son is on a Sheriff's tac/swat team. He uses 14" barrel'd M4 and started with an angled forgrip. He said that spending 8 hours/day doing room sweep drills he gave up on the angled forgrip (wrist cramps) and went with a vertical forgrip. A vertical forgrip is MUCH more ergonomic than either the angled or conventional hand guard. Look at the geometry. You're twisting your wrist into an unnatural position with a conventional handguard or angled forgrip. This becomes even more pronounced the shorter the gun. Old (dumb) habits die hard.
@ChefofWar33

True. But I find that a vertical foregrip is rotationally unstable compared to an angled one. But then again, I dont shoot for 8 hrs a day. XD

i traded a vero axon frame lock (dlc/dlc) for a Maxim Defense SCW kit. It gets even more compact than the HBPDW, but having such a compact form factor required a proprietary shortened BCG, receiver extension (aka buffer tube), buffer weight, and buffer spring to be included with the kit. This obviously drives the price up to somewhere between $500-$600, which sounds like a lot until you add up all of the additional components that come with the stock/brace. Mine came with both the brace and the stock, so i can still shoot it while I wait for my form 1 to come back on the lower. The only real drawback I can think of to a system like the SCW is the fact that it no longer allows you to pop the rear takedown pin and hinge the gun open, so disassembly/reassembly can get a little tricky until you do it a few times. Overall its still a 10/10 for me.

@Noadvantage246
4 жыл бұрын
The only problems with that is, firstly it could take up to a year for them to approve or not in that time you wouldn't be able to use your firearm as you've already declared it a SBR and don't have approval yet. Secondly the laws of not being able to have it loaded in a vehicle are pretty big for most ppl bcuz besides a range toy that's generally why ppl like PDWs as a backup truck gun with more firepower than your CCW. Also the whole reason of a SBR is the portable factor and that's pretty heavily negated when you can't even cross state lines. Lastly it's possible they ban SBRs in the future meaning you'd have to destroy yours or have it confiscated.
@jamesR1990
4 жыл бұрын
@@Noadvantage246 but isn't the form 1 the request to make a SBR so I wouldn't have it as an SBR until I get approval. As to your idea that they ban them outright that's a danger with every firearm as of late with both parties. They're trying to force registration and then bans already. I don't care if I can't have it loaded in a vehicle I CC anyways so it's obviously better but redundant for my purposes as a "truck gun". I want it purely as a PDW/home defense gun. Most of the drawbacks don't apply to my situation

What I did was make an AR pistol with a brace and I registered a completely bare lower receiver for the SBR. I left it unassembled in my safe for the four months it took to get it approved and "built" it once I got the stamp. This works well since if you need to travel you can just switch the upper from the SBR lower to the pistol lower. Hope this helps!

Certain states also say you can’t conceal an SBR, but you definitely can a pistol (obviously). So using an AR pistol with a folder in a book bag is a pretty good idea if you’re on a longer trip, or you’re going to an area you’re not used to, or if the active shooter scenario ever kicks off. Definitely a reasonable solution.

Even conservatives are getting too used to there being an agency to regulate literally everything. Take your pick of service, material, or action, and there's probably some executive regulation hovering around it. I think we've lost sight of past times when some things in life simply... existed... and that was it without power dynamics.

But if people want their rights defended, it's not going to happen if everyone sits and suffers silently by themselves.
