Hot Toys needs to recreate this! They could do a customisable model where it has all the internal space to allow you to a a motor and electronics or you can just leave it as a display piece......or they could even do a die cast version!

Johnny 5 was part of my happy childhood when I was 7. We were poor then, but my mom was able to save some money so we can watch the movie together. She even bought some snacks we could eat at the theater. It broke my heart when they destroyed J5 and I was so psyched when he was chasing the bad guys and the song "I Need A Hero" was playing.

If they released this today - in this scale/detail - they would sell tens of thousands of them. Even as a static model. As an R/C it would be more niche but I think they could charge $500. I'd buy one! If they did this it would kind of be like the hovering Delorean.

@@TheRandomMechanic Those are actually re-molds/knockoffs of the Joz Robotics Robot V toy. They also pop up on ebay now and then as unpainted or unassembled kits. Very rarely an actual Robot V will pop up on there, just keep an eye out!

@@technosaurusarcanex3247 i am awear of that , but it is the only johnny 5 toy there is , they didnt make many robot v toys and when they pop up they are way too expensive , in fairness so are the knock offs they were around 700 bucks last time i saw them , with enough work they are pretty decent , i spent 5 and a half weeks on mine , looks pretty nice , of course i picked mine up back when they were still 88 bucks .

Thank you for documenting this prop. This honestly makes me very happy. I've wanted that toy all my life and just knowing that there is one out there for prosperity reasons makes me ok with not getting it, they didnt all see the garbage.

I loved Short Circuit 2 so much as a kid that I made one of these out of cardboard. I even peeled the top layer off of the cardboard to reveal the wavy cardboard underneath to mimic the treads. 🙂

wanted one so bad as a kid and even as an adult they were IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND, nowadays with 3D print technology people are making SO MANY toy replicas and it's absolutely beautiful 😍 to see people keeping number 5...ALIVE!

They missed a golden opportunity by not selling toy replicas of Johnny 5. Even if it wasn't RC controlled, I believe even just a posable action figure in that size would have done well. They could have included extra parts to make either the stock robot version, or the Johhny 5 version, and then encouraged people to buy a bunch of them to recreate scenes from the first movie.

i rewatched and relived my childhood yesterday and listened to the whole ending theme via crown amps and klipsch RP series and it was damn good it was magical. btw the pixar intro with the lamp always reminded me of Johhny 5

Man, I wish someone would take this prop and replicate it exactly for those of us fans to be able have our own mini J5. And I'm not even talking about that Robot V that's out there. Which is not screen accurate. But one like this prop.

@@webbox100 It would have been amazing to mold every part, but clearly the task was to document and conserve. Great job, and hopefully one day a factory can actually shoot these. Are fans expected to 3D print and assemble parts?

@@ianburkard Hehe, I was over-ambitious and tried molding every part. The problem is that pieces that were originally separately molded and cast were then very strongly glued together, so there were whole sections that were impossible to mold without sawing apart! As for future plans for the fans, I know the small but passionate Input-Inc. team is splitting time their available time between the full-size and the toy, so slowly but surely cool things are happening!

This is my favorite childhood movie. Thank you for making this video always wanted to know more about the little rc johnny five.its such a shame that they never made toys of these guys. They probably didn't make them because the movie didn't do as well as they hoped. Someone needs to make a petition for these guys to be made I would definitely buy 3 or 5 of them.

As a child in the 80s, I constantly asked my parents to find me the toy, but they couldn't. I ended up taking all my grey Legos and made an almost perfect replica, but I could never find the proper parts to make the zero turn treads.

I would love to see it. My son made a quick Johnny 5 out of legos as well, nothing like the one you built I'm sure. Maybe you could take tread and glue it together like the designers did and the submit your idea to LEGO IDEAS! That would be an awesome toy!

Just a tip! You can build a Johnny five from set number 42100, there are instructions online to make it a very nice remote controlled Johnny five! I am getting one myself for that purpose only! :)

I was pissed they didn’t make a toy..I would have treated it like a gem. In a nice glass box and plaque. Was my favorite movie as a kid. And to hear it was filmed in Toronto for number 2 I was over the moon. Since then have been sad to not ever find a replica.

Thanks! Hehe, I hadn’t clocked that the typeface was the same as what TNG used (I guess it is!), so the ones on this video are made from stills of the SC2 credits.

Like they said there were only 5 fully RC mini J5s. They have one, another is in the possesion of a guy who runs a company that does props but it got smashed during an earthquake. The others are... out there. It's easier to get a less accurate but more common Robot V from Joz Robotics. Out of production, but they pop up on ebay and such places rarely. Not a 1 to 1 reproduction as some details/sizes are off, but it's the best us collectors have.

It is definitely crazy that no toy has been made of Johnny 5 yet. It's annoying how so much merchandise is made for 1980s horror movies but this movie gets ignored. Short Circuit made the same amount of money as Child's Play so why do we have a million Chucky dolls you can buy but no Johnny 5?

I believe these Johnny 5's were made by a company called Alchemy II, they are known for the animatronics in Welcome to Pooh Corner. But more famously created the lore and world of Teddy Ruxpin.

Can you imagine the merchandising potential? I wonder who owns the rights to using the robot, my guess is the studio/film company BUT like star wars turned out to make bazillions in merch... and well when you have such a pivotal/central character that is basically the best movie robot ever??? I am just saying they should STILL get the ball rolling on some nice merchandise.

When an actual plot point of the movie is the main character literally BUILDING AND SELLING J5 TOYS, not having any available in RL toy stores seems like an incredibly shortsighted decision. Apparently they didn’t want to make a truckload of money. I wanted one so bad I built my own out of Lego.

Some full-size J5s still exist, now in the hands of private collectors. There are also fans building amazing full-size replicas with the passionate research done by the Input-inc.com team.

A lot of the parts were glued together very strongly and you'd have to destroy the prop to get molds of it all.

First of all, awesome video. I love the detail that went into it and the project. What was the font used to create the SC2 yellow typeface? I know the white title logo is called Cut-In, but cannot find the correct typeface for SC2.

I built one from my grandparents empty medicine bottles, cardboard, spray paint remote control car etc. Anyway the real #5 was for sale on eBay by the dude that was in short circuit 1 but he took him off the site for some unknown reason
