Ever heard of fuses?
@debbiebernhardt5406
Жыл бұрын
Can this be done at higher volts of like 36, 48 or even 60? I gonna be stuck between 30 to 50 amps from 12 volt is insufficient wattage(do volts x amps). 12 x 50 = 600 watts for constant flow in dc, however 36 x 50 = 1,800 watts. More energy flowing through circuit. I just need higher volts due to many applications that could use higher volts in place of lower volts for more control and isolation. 12 volt is dedicated signals, so no random spikes in draw allowed on it. However the higher volt system can accommodate the extra volts just to be able to withstand higher load.

and why is that?!? the "short" is just on the motor, not on the battery. Check the circuit!
@ytteman
Жыл бұрын
@@robegatt The supply/battery is connected directly (via the relay contacts) to the motor when the relay is active. This means that the short circuit current must be disconnected by the relay contacts when the circuit trips. Also, if the switch is pressed to reactivate when the short is still there, the short circuit current will go thru the switch. So, the short circuit current should be limited to what both the switch and the relay can handle. With a current limit on the supply, the circuit can be useful.
@colinstamp9053
Жыл бұрын
@@robegatt Nope. The circuit relies on the incoming supply collapsing below the relay's holding voltage. The circuit does have a use, but not as short-circuit protection. It's actually a "no volt release" switch. They're used, for example, to prevent motors unexpectedly re-starting after a temporary break in the incoming supply.

There should be a small power resistor before the relay (e.g. 0.5Ohm) to assure reasonable voltage drop. Secondly, it starts working once the reset button is pushed. I would consider using resettable thermal fuse chosen for the amps of the motor instead if the latching indicator (LEDs) is not needed.

Bad design. Accidentally pressing ‘reset’ button while still in ‘short’ state (thinking it would remove ‘short’) will blow your fuse, which cancels the point of the circuit. Also, don’t use this on anything high-voltage. Shorting relay’s isolated contacts to live ones, even for a short time, denies the purpose of relay: to keep those contacts isolated at all time. Best purpose of this is to show how to not design protection circuits.

This circuit is still a little dangerous though. There is no current limiting in this circuit. If this were a 220V relay and it were powered from mains, you're going to see some sparks and might just activate the circuit breaker because you're still actually creating a short circuit. At 220V and a short circuit current of 100-300 amps going through the relay's normally open contact just while deactivating the relay and breaking the contact, that relay's normally open switch contact is not going to be a happy camper..
