Many thanks, Classic Jazz Concert Club. 00:07 THEME A - VERSE - 16 bars (really 8 repeated) in the key of F - Ensemble 00:31 THEME A - VERSE - played by the ensemble 00:54 THEME B - CHORUS - 8 bars - again played twice, ensemble - note Craig's clarinet playing the 'responses' 01:18 THEME B - CHORUS - again played twice, ensemble 01:40 THEME A - VERSE - Greg sings it 02:04 THEME B - CHORUS - Greg sings the eight bars; the others sing the responses 02:15 THEME C - with a seamless change to the key of B flat, the trombone traditionally is first to play this new 16-bar theme, which gives much-needed variety to the piece 02:37 THEME C - played with full ensemble, but with trombone still taking the melody 03:00 THEME C - full ensemble, with trombone still stating the melody and other front-liners frolicking around the chords (among them you may detect A7ths and C minors) 03:23 THEME B - CHORUS - we're back to the key of F and we're repeating what happened at 02:04. 03:34 THEME B - CHORUS - ensemble, twice through the eight bars 03:57 CODA - a little 2-bar CODA, introduced by Greg's guitar 'Short Dress Gal' was composed in 1925 by cornet-playing bandleader Sam Morgan and recorded by his jazz band in New Orleans on 22 October 1927. He had the great Jim Robinson on trombone and it was Jim who first played that theme you hear from Barnabus at 02:15. Listen to the superb Morgan recording at: kzitem.info/news/bejne/mKWtzXeVmnSQY6w Tuba Skinny's version is closely modelled on it, though Tuba Skinny omit Morgan's 4-bar Introduction and they play a 2-bar Coda, while he preferred a 4-bar. Tuba Skinny, incidentally, included this tune in their 'Owl Call Blues' CD.

I love the harmonies & the trombone solo is so mournful. I should be preparing a seminar.
...and the re-entry after a pointless Sam Morgan Band solo always warms the heart. (listen...they almost all have it)

Tuba Skinny has not prepared for this song! The clarinet, trombone, banjo, guitar and wahboard are not dressed in dresses. Only Shaye, Erika and the tuba are in dresses! And this is supposed to be a gal of short dresses?
