with Leeds United in 1992.
Alongside 70s tearn-mate Jim Smith, Howard is one of Boston's proudest footballing exports - both having begun their managerial journeys at York Street. He played and then managed during the Pilgrims' most successful period.
United had finished third, fourth and second under Smith, before winning the title in the campaign he left to join Colchester United. Keith Jobling had taken over that season and he led a successful title defence in 1974.
Howard took over a transitional team in 1975 and left in 1976-1977 with United well on their way to a third title. The Pilgrims, under Mick Walker, won a fourth in 1978 before joining the new Alliance Premier League (now National League) in 1979.
Boston went a remarkable 51 games unbeaten in the league from January 1972 to February 1973 - a run which began and ended with defeats at Skelmersdale United. With Wilkinson (who arrived in 1971) in the side for much of that run United won 36, drew 15 and eventually lost playing their second game of a weekend - having won 2-0 at Lancaster City the day before Sker prevailed.
York Street truly was a fortress, no team taking maximum points from the Pilgrims' patch across two years and eight months, from March 1971.

Day 1973, Boston scored 149 and conceded 41 in those matches, keeping 32 clean sheets.
Having taken United to two consecutive Northern Premier League championships, Howard went on to manage Mossley, the England semi-professional side, Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds.
From 1971-1972 Wilkinson's debut campaign) through to 1977-1978 (the season after Howard departed), United added two NPL Cups, a Lincolnshire Cup, Eastern Professional Floodlit Cup, Champion of Champions (NPL vs Southern League) Cup, four NPL Challenge Shields and an Inter-League Cup to their trophy cabinet.
Wilkinson scored a hat-trick as United recorded one of their most famous victories in April 1976: 8-0 against Barrow. Howard later went one better, netting four (his last goals for the dub) in a 5-1 win away to Buxton.
He is the only United manager to net a hat-trick for the club.
He later becarne the FA technical director and then took over as caretaker England manager following the departure of Glenn Hoddle. After six years at the FA, he returned to club management with Sunderland.
Howard was awarded an OBE in the latest New Year's Honours List and has been chairman of the League Managers Association for 33 years - but will step down this summer.
Welcome back to a true United legend!
