Today is #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s amazing how this falls within Menopause Awareness Month. We really do not talk about how your mental health changes in perimenopause and menopause enough.
There are very real mental health changes that can hit you during this time! Trust me you aren’t crazy, and no you don’t necessarily need an antidepressant.
What’s happening is with the decline in progesterone comes a lot of anxiety and potentially insomnia which can trigger depression and more anxiety. Progesterone makes the uber calming neurotransmitters called GABA (Gamma Amino Butyric Acid). They keep your brain calm, tranquil, and they help you sleep at night.
So most likely if you’re having mental health changes in perimenopause and menopause you may want to talk to your doctor about bringing in some Vitex to get your progesterone up, or even consider taking Prometrium the second half of your cycle to offset the symptoms you’re having. Progesterone also keeps estrogen in check, offsetting crime scene periods and anxiety!
