It gets sharper, if your not in dirt, just cutting wood it cuts faster. In a dirt application the semi chisel will outlast the full chisel. Plus I like filing the full chisel, you can really see your corner, and when your eyesight start failing with age the better you can see the corner and edge the better job I can do. Just my opinion, others may vary.

@@babalu1126 Yeah full chisel is great if you're cutting clean wood but man it sucks if you're dealing with dirty wood. I have different chains on different types of saws. Full chisel does cut faster when it's truly sharp but I also feel like you hit a "wall" with it more suddenly than semi-chisel where it just suddenly stops cutting well
@reddogknives

I also prefer full chisel in clean wood. But here in Arizona I cut mostly dirty hard Mesquite. It grows with a lot of silica in the wood and semi chisel will outlast four to one in this dirty ass wood. Not quite as fast but it will outlast by a long shot. Just my thoughts from a guy in Tucson.

Semi chisel is a safer chain, less chance of kickback for beginners or just someone that doesn't want an aggressive chain. It cuts a little slower, but if you're not cutting wood every day, it isn't going to matter.

The sequence and other design factors have a lot of influence on kickback too. Full skip has more potential for it than full comp for instance. And if you don't want a hungry chain I would argue that the height of the rakers is gonna affect that more than cutter geometry. At least in my experience. If you want a "less hungry" chain just neglect your rakers. Problem solved 😅
@cpreit8862

@5.56SPR true true, and if you want a chain that doesn't cut neglect the rakers. I always buy stihl chains and their yellow chain semi chisel built for a safer cut. Regardless, every chain is dangerous. Leg or tree it cuts the same
@brizzle8797
Жыл бұрын
I know it's gonna sound like I'm being a baby about it. But because I'm just a firewood guy and not a pro arborist or whatever what I tend to do is use the stihl RS chain When I am falling and bucking, And if I'm going to use the big saw for limbing and such I'll switch out the low kickback chain just to give me a little more peace of mind and if I happen to hit the dirt it's probably not gonna be as bad. I also tend not to use the RS chain if I am bucking up smaller rounds. I save it more for when most or all of the bar is buried into wood because in my mind it feels like the kickback chance is far less. Like I said I'm not very cool but it makes me feel better especially when I'm out in the woods alone.

@@JustinEdinborough Yeah I've found when it comes to the rakers it's definitely best to have a gauge especially as the chain becomes more heavily used and the cutters become less uniform in length. A very small amount of material removed from the rakers can have a big impact on the way the chain cuts. It won't cut very smoothly if your rakers aren't filed equally for their respective cutters

@AnarchAngel1

No they are both round filed. It simply refers to the geometry where the side plate and top plate meet. As Buckin showed semi-chisel is rounded, full chisel comes to a sharp point essentially. Full chisel generally cuts faster but it's more sensitive to hitting dirt etc.

You can only square grind full chisel to my knowledge but that doesn't mean full chisel is always or even commonly square ground.
