As a graphic designer, I can assure you that what is "right" and what "looks right" are often not the same! There are plenty of instances of things being tweaked so that they seem correct to the eye, even though they are a bit off from geometric perfection. For example, the capital "G" in the Google logo seems to be a perfect circle, but the section near the cross-bar is actually bent slightly inwards. Look up "Google logo anatomy" to see what I mean. All this to say: I'm sure the designer of the DVD logo knew exactly what they were doing.

The change of perspective is like we are rotating in 3d and taking a projection of the cd. So that's a linear transformation just like stretching. So yes the circle should preserve and at the exact centre if it were correctly done.
@AlexKnauth
2 жыл бұрын
A change of perspective isn't always a linear transformation though. If the camera gets closer to an object, the "front" of it increases in projection-area more quickly than the "back" of it in a non-linear way. This is how a Dolly-Zoom can make things look wonky... but it's probably easier to visualize this with the projection from a light-source instead of a camera, the shadows of an object get wonky as the object gets closer to the light-source, and the shadows of the "front" of the object grow more quickly than the shadows of the "back" of the object.

@@hrodwulf172 its literally not possible, there is no way to imagine the gap between 3d and 2d, its at best estimations. it has to do with linear mapping, think about it this way, if you map the image of a cd and rotate it all the way to a single side of the cd in 2d dimensions your best representation is a single line, from that line you can discern nothing but the height of the disc. because there exists no mapping in (x,y,z) that can be represented in (x,y) not even (x,y,0)

@@zzzz-fk8ce Buddy, go look at nvidia's new flexicube tech. 2 minute papers just did a video on it which can break it down for you nicely. I'm just getting nit picky over the absolutist statement that a 3d object/space can not be remapped with 2d data. It's just simply untrue, if it was, then surgery robots wouldn't exist. Everything is an approximation. Down to the millimeter is an approximation. Or a thousandth of a millimeter. Nothing we have to measure anything with will tell you down to the atom what an objects dimensions are. If that's what you're getting at, then ok. Sure. Everything is an estimation. Water is wet. But I think in realistic terms, what you're saying has been disproven across countless different examples of current technology. We have already hit the point where we can remap 3d objects pretty accurately w 2d info. For a simple object like a DVD, we hit that milestone decades ago. Now we can even remap complex scenes.

@@rgb2296 KZitem keeps deleting anything that hints towards a domain so I have to say that the site needs punctuation com. Hopefully this message isn’t immediately filtered for that, it was when I specified the punctuation. It’s also an album so the a is surrounded by slashes then the ID. Really painful getting around the filter and yet spam bots seem to be able to posts links anyway 🤷♀️

What's weirder is that the logo looks like someone's face, with the D's as eyes, V as the nose, and the disc as the mouth.

I can’t believe they chose to make a more visually appealing design rather than making it 100% accurate so that when people stretch it out, it looks exactly the same!!!!😱

when you stretch with this tool you stretch proportionally. But when you turn a 3D disc to change the angle view, the hole doesn't stretch proportionally : it follows the firt quarter of a sine or cosine function. Put your disc on a motor that rotates slowly but constantly and plot the points. Maybe you will be able to find a position that matches the logo
@random832
2 жыл бұрын
This only holds true when you compare the stretching to the angle of rotation. When comparing the stretching of the hole to the stretching of the disc's outer rim, both should be proportional to each other since both will have the same relationship to the angle.

This is what’s called a logo. It’s not actually representative of real life visuals, it’s a symbol that represents something as a visual shorthand and may not be literal.

Being a graphic designer, I can tell you that most likely the logo was designed that way for small scale "legibility". Obviously you're not reading a word here, but at a small scale the object would still be clearly recognized as a disc. Making the proportions of the inner hole more accurate would likely cause the detail to be lost when the logo is shrunk to a tiny size.

It’s a design principle called optical balancing. The ‘V’ is very pointy, so the designer made it point directly to the center of the hole. This makes the logo more visually balanced, but at the cost of realism.

We have a similar issue here in Berlin with the icon of the "Brandenburger Tor" (a monument). It's completely incorrect perspectively. But I guess photorealism isn't the point of an icon. Intricate ines close to each other probably can cause issues in print.

It's right from a design perspective. The right side of the disc symbol is thicker because the whole thing is italicized and the point on the "V" is meant to be centered with the center of the hole in the middle (at an angle). The hole in the middle is larger to be better identifiable at small optical sizes and with the most economical printing techniques. That's also why it's taller than it should be, you don't want a tiny toothpick-shaped hole in your logo design. This looks like as if one was to draw a CD or a DVD at a flat angle from memory, which means that this exaggerated shape is more recognizable as an optical disc than the realistic version.

They do stuff like this for trademark protection reasons. Its harder to trademark basic shapes. Making it more than just a deformed circle makes it easier to protect in court.
